I'm reading from the book of
2 Timothy, the third chapter of 2 Timothy. And I'll begin reading with verse
12. 2 Timothy chapter 3, verse 12. Yea, and all that will live godly
in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution, but evil men and seducers, false
preachers, shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. But continue thou, continue thou
in the things which thou hast learned, and hast been assured
of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them." Learned them from God. And that from a child thou hast
known these holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise
unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All
Scripture, Old Testament, New Testament, Genesis through Revelation,
all Scripture is given by inspiration of God. It's God breathed and
is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness that the man of God might be
mature. perfected, throughly furnished
unto all good works. I charge thee, I charge thee
therefore before God and before the Lord Jesus Christ who shall
judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom,
preach the word. Preach the word. Be instant in-season, out-of-season,
reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all patience, long-suffering,
and doctrine. For the time will come when they
will not endure, they'll not tolerate sound doctrine. But
after their own desires and lusts shall they heap to themselves
teachers, having itching ears, and they'll Turn away their ears
from the truth, and they shall be turned unto
fables, fiction, man-made dreams. But watch thou, keep your head
in all things, endure afflictions which will come, and do the work
of an evangelist. Do the work of an evangelist.
and make full or fulfill thy ministry, make full proof of
thy ministry. Now realize that these words from the aging Apostle Paul, written from prison, are addressed
primarily to Timothy and to those who preach the gospel. There is but one gospel. Whatever
men may say, there is but one gospel. Brother Paul Kuhn was telling
us, or Brother John Chapman was telling us a little while ago,
that he was talking to an individual about spiritual matters and about
God, about the Word of God, and this person says now, Don't worry
about me. I'll make it to heaven one way
or another. That's distressing. That doesn't make me angry anymore. That burdens my heart greatly. That person really believes that.
I'll make it to heaven. There's just all kind of things
wrong with that. We don't make it to heaven. And
one way or another, there's one way. Christ said, I am the way.
Brother Barnard was preaching years ago. I'll never forget.
This illustration he gave made a great impression upon me, had
a great impact upon me. But we're preaching to a world
who does not believe what we're preaching. Now, we're preaching
to a world who believes there's a God. Of course, the devil believes
there's a God and trembles. We're preaching to a world who
has some understanding of the fact that there's life after
death. They talk about, even the old Indians talked about
a happy hunting ground, and they have some some belief
in the fact that a person called Jesus Christ, a great prophet,
healer, unusual person, lived. But we're preaching to a generation
which is totally ignorant of the character of God and the
glory of God and the righteousness of God and the redemption which
God has purposed and planned and given to us in His Son. They're
ignorant of the particulars of that redemption. They're ignorant
of that. Brother Barnard said he was preaching in a meeting
up north years ago, and as he preached, he looked down and
there was a young woman sitting down near the front in this big
tent meeting. She was sitting down near the
front, and all the time he was preaching, his eyes would come
back to her. She had such a distressed look
on her face. Such a troubled look. Tears in
her eyes. And she just listened to him
so intently with that distressed look on her face. And he said
when the service was over that he walked off the platform and
she just kept standing there. And he said, I walked over to
her and said, I put my hand on the tent post and leaned over
and I said to her, young lady, could I be of some help? She
said, for Christ's sake, leave me alone. Well, he said it took him back,
you know, but that look out of her eyes, for Christ's sake,
leave me alone. Well, he said, young lady, for
Christ's sake, I'll do about anything. And for Christ's sake, I'll leave
you alone." And he said, he told me the follow-up
on that thing is that she left that service and either that
night or the next morning was killed in an automobile wreck. She wrapped her sport car around
a tree and killed her instantly. Well, we're preaching to a people
who are wise and intelligent in the things
of the world, but they're ignorant and blasphemous in the things
of God. Just ignorant. And Paul is writing
this to Timothy, the preacher, and he's saying, preach the Word.
Be true to the Scriptures. Be true to the Word of God. There's
but one gospel. It's the gospel of God's everlasting
mercies. It's the gospel, if I know anything
about the Bible, it's the gospel of covenant mercies, of eternal
mercies, of God-given mercies, of sovereign mercy, of mercies
to sinners. It's the gospel of mercy. And
it's the gospel according to the Scriptures. Christ died for
our sins according to the Scriptures. It's the fulfillment of His promises
and His purposes and the pictures of grace throughout the Old Testament. It's a narrow gospel. It's God's
gospel. It's the gospel of a full and
effectual salvation. Let me show you something over
here in Romans 1. Romans chapter 1, about this gospel. We're not being fanatical. We're
not being radical. We're trying to be scriptural.
biblical. There's but one gospel. There's not another way for people
who dislike this way. There's just one way. It says here in Romans 1 verse
16, Paul said, for I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. The
gospel of Christ. This is the Christ of eternal
deity of incarnation of righteousness and death and intercession. It's the gospel of Christ. For
that gospel is the power of God unto salvation, unto deliverance
to everyone that believe it, Jew first and also to the Greek,
old and young, male and female, bond and free. For, now watch
this, for therein, that is in that gospel, In that gospel is
the righteousness of God revealed. For in that gospel... This is
the reason that it's the one gospel, that it's the power of
God unto salvation, that it's deliverance for Jew and Gentile.
For therein, for in that one gospel, is the righteousness
of God. We're not talking about God's
essential righteousness, God's perfect holiness in Himself.
We're talking about the righteousness and holiness which he has purposed
and provided for us that we might be in communion with him. That's what we're talking about.
That's what we're talking about, and it's revealed in that gospel. And like Paul's telling Timothy
here to preach any other gospel, dare we preach any other gospel?
When Paul said, even if it be an angel from heaven, let him
be accursed, dare we preach any other gospel? Dare we compromise
with anyone? The Apostle Paul said, necessity
is laid upon me. I must preach the gospel. Woe
is unto me if I don't preach the gospel. I have no choice. Whether I preach here or whether
I preach in some other pulpit, or whether I fill in for some
pastor, or whether I go over to England, or Mexico, or wherever. It's not a question of getting
along with people, it's a question of preaching the gospel. Dare
I preach anything else? I think one of the greatest insults
that someone passed along my way in all my life, and I perhaps
didn't mean it, perhaps I took it wrong, But this individual
was saying to me, he said, do you preach sometimes in Southern
Baptist churches? I said, well, I have, yes. And
you preach in Presbyterian churches? I said, well, yes, yes, I have. And do you preach in churches
all over the country? Yes, wherever I get an invitation. Well, do you preach the same
message out you preach at home? I don't know why anybody would
even ask a question like that. There isn't any other message
to preach. Woe is unto me if I preach not
the gospel. We don't have a choice of messages. And this is addressed primarily,
I realize it, addressed primarily to this young minister of the
gospel. to every minister of the gospel
who reads it, who hears it. But, and here's my main point,
is not this scripture addressed to all believers? Is not it addressed
to all believers? For are we not all in the ministry? Are we not all in the ministry?
Is not every believer in the ministry? Let's see if we can
make good on that. Turn to Ephesians 4. You know,
you look to me to preach the gospel, be true to the Word of
God, and you have every right to do so. But do I not have every
right to look to you to be true to the Word of God also, true
to the gospel, in your witness, in your lives, in your support? Does God only require of His
preachers that they walk in the way of life and believe the way
of life and preach the way of life? In Ephesians 4 verse 11,
it says here, talking about in the church, our Lord gave some
apostles and some prophets and some evangelists and some pastors
and teachers. There are several offices. There
are several ministries. There are several divisions,
diversities of gifts. And all of it for the perfecting
of the saints, maturing of the saints, for the work of the ministry.
Not for the work of their ministries, but for the work of the ministry.
And for the edifying of the body of Christ till we all, till we
all, to all the elect come in the unity of the faith and of
the knowledge of the Son of God unto a mature man, unto the measure
of the stature of the fullness of Christ, unto the completeness
which is found only in Him. Look at Romans 12. I want you
to look at these Scriptures now. It's important that you turn
to these. I'm making this point. This Scripture exhorting us to preach the Word,
to have faithfulness to the Gospel, to make full proof of our ministry,
to fulfill the duties of our ministry, is not just addressed
to me, but to you and to every believer. Romans 12, beginning
with verse 3. For I say through the grace given
unto me, to every man that is among you, every man that is
among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to
think, but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to
every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in
one body, that is, in our own natural body there are many members,
and all members have not the same office, They have not the
same office now, but they have the same function to fulfill the needs of this
body and to carry out the orders of this head. In other words,
the hand and the foot doesn't have the same office, but it
has the same master, has the same objective and goal, doesn't
it? Each member of the body. And
it would be an incomplete body and it could not function as
a complete body if some of these members were missing. That's
right. So they don't have the same office. So we being many are one body
in Christ and every one essential member is one of another. Having
then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to
us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion
of faith, or ministry, let us wait on our ministering, or he
that teacheth on teaching, or he that exhorteth on exhortation,
or he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity, he that ruleth
with diligence, he that showeth mercy with cheerfulness." You
see what I'm saying? Here's this body. It's engaged. in preaching the gospel right
now. And every part of it, the eyes, the mouth, the tongue,
the arms, the feet, the mind, the heart, everything's engaged
in this one act. I sure hope my arm don't run
off over here and start doing something else. Or this half,
or maybe my heart somewhere else. Then I'm going to fail at this
test. So this preaching of the gospel, here's a body of Christ. And I go to England and Africa
tomorrow, but this body goes over there and preaches the gospel. And wherever you are, I am, and
we are. You see, we're one in Christ.
We have a ministry. God has given us a ministry. You know, over here in Acts 13,
when He sent Paul and Barnabas out to preach, Acts 13, the Lord
didn't have to do this, but He did. I wouldn't say that He were
that God was required to do this, but He did. It says in verse
2 of Acts 13, And they ministered to the Lord, and fasted. And
the Holy Ghost said to that church at Antioch, Separate, separate
me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called
them. And when that church fasted and prayed, they laid hands on
them, and that church sent them, sent them to preach the gospel. You see this, now watch this,
I'm going to really hit something here. For all of us, whether
it be those who pray or those who give or those who serve in
other capacities here, those who contribute, those who are
part of this body, even members of the body that are not out
in the forefront all the time, They support, contribute, and
make possible from the human standpoint whatever message proceeds
from their midst. Whatever message goes out of
here, every one of us are in cahoots on sending it out. That's
right. Whatever message goes out from
here, however it goes out, this is the message of your message
and your ministry. That's right. 2 John. Now watch this carefully.
2 John. Now listen to it. You stay with
me here now and listen carefully. If this is right, it carries
a lot of weight, and I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it
was right. The book of 2 John. Now listen. 2 John. For many deceivers are
entered into the world. who confess not that Jesus Christ
is come in the flesh. That's all that's implied in
who he is and what he did and why he did it and where he is
now. Now this is a deceiver and an antichrist. Now look to yourselves
that we lose not those things which we have wrought, which
we've gained, but that we receive a full reward. Whosoever transgresseth
and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, In the doctrine of
Christ, now I'm going over some of these things in a minute.
In the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abided in the
doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. Now if
there come any unto you and bring not this doctrine, what doctrine?
The doctrine of Christ, the gospel. The gospel of Christ, his substitution,
his atonement, his righteousness, his wisdom, justifications, the
doctrine of Christ. Don't you receive him into your
house. Don't you receive him into your church. Don't you receive
him into your fellowship. Don't you receive him into your
circle. And don't you bid him God's feet. Don't you contribute
to him. Don't you wish him well on his
journey. Don't you support him in any shape, form, or fashion.
That's bidding him God's feet. See, that's what did. The fellow
came by. They gave him a jug of wine and some groceries, and
God bless you on your journey. May the wind always be at your
back. Don't you do that. Watch it now. For if you do,
you bid him God's speed, you contribute to his ministry, you
are a partaker of his evil deeds. Every soul he deceives, you deceive. Every soul he butchers, you butcher.
Every person he leads astray, you contribute to it. You're
a partaker of his evil. You know what it says? All right,
if that be true, if those who contribute to error and support
error and encourage error do not rebuke error and reprove
error and bid those in error Godspeed, well, blessings on
you. No, sir, no blessings on you. Paul said, if you preach the
gospel, let him be accursed. Don't you bless him. Is that
what he said? He said, you're hard. I'm just
reading the scriptures now. I'm not being hard. I'm reading
God's Word. So if those who support error are partakers of the deeds
of error, then those who support the gospel of truth are partakers
of the blessings of truth. Is that not right? Well, sure
it's right. In other words, if people support error, and those
who deceive, he said they are deceivers and they're being deceived,
and they're anti-Christ, and this, you know, in politics you
can live and let live. In social circles you can live
and let live. Where people want to eat or not
eat, or what they want to eat or not eat, but when it comes
to the gospel of Christ, you can't live and let live. There's no room for compromise. That's right, that's what he's
saying here. And you bid him Godspeed, you're a partaker of
his evil deeds. You see, believers, the church
is the guardian of the gospel. Now let me show you that. Turn
to Romans 16. You men here, all of us together, it's not just
my responsibility. And we're not a Gestapo, we're
not out hunting communists and looking behind every bush to
find somebody's error. I'm talking about the truth of the gospel. And
you know what I'm talking about. I'm talking about that middle
C, that gospel of grace, that gospel that gives God the glory.
But here in Romans 16, he says in verse 17, Now I beseech you,
brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary
to the doctrine which you have learned. Now, you don't want
to get on a fellow because he grows a mustache. That ain't
got nothing to do with the doctrine you learned. You don't want to
get on a fellow because his hair is down over his collar, over
his ears. You don't want to get on somebody because they're dressed,
maybe they may not be as long as you're dressed. That's not
the doctrine you're learning. You don't want to get on somebody
because they went to a ball game and you're against ball games.
This is foolishness. We're not Pharisees out looking
for somebody that didn't shine their shoes. He's talking about
the doctrine which you've learned. You see what I'm saying? The
doctrine. What doctrine? The doctrine of Christ. That's
what he said over here in 2 John. If any come to you and bring
not this doctrine, the doctrine of Christ, don't you beat him,
Godspeed. And he says here in Romans 16,
you mark those. You mark people, even in your
circles, which cause division and offenses contrary to that
doctrine which you've learned, and you avoid them. Do something
about it. Do something about it. I got
a preacher friend who raises sheep. And last year he shot 28 dogs
on his property. People called and said, My dog
up at your place. He said, If he was, he is. Asked him about that and he said
you go out some morning find one of those little lambs with
his throat chewed out And said you won't tolerate dogs around
your sheep dogs will kill your sheep and they just kill it for
the pleasure of it And he said I don't let a dog get on my property
And you don't want to let anybody get on this property who does
not believe the gospel of God's grace Because they'll butcher
sheep They'll lead them astray. It's exactly right Shoot them
while they're outside. That's exactly what he said.
Avoid them. That's true. But I'm not talking about on
every little peculiarity you've got. I'm talking about on the
gospel. On how God saves sinners. You may not understand what I'm
talking about. How God saves sinners. You've got to be intelligent
enough in the gospel to know when to shoot. You've got to
be able to tell a dog from a sheep. That's exactly right. Now I beseech you, brethren,
verse 18, for they that are such serve not the Lord Jesus Christ,
they serve their own belly. They're not interested in the
glory of God, they're interested in themselves. And by good words
and fair speeches they deceive the hearts of the simple. You
say, well, brethren, they're not going to... I'm being around
here strong enough, you don't have to worry about a fellow
denying the gospel. You're strong men, I'm worried
about. It's those that are not so strong. See what I'm talking
about? It's those that are not so strong. Look at 1 Timothy 5.22. Yes,
the church is the guardian. The guardian. 1 Timothy 5.22. You know, he says here, don't
be so quick to put a man in the pulpit. Don't be so quick to
put a man before a Sunday school class. Don't be so quick to put
a man in the place of leadership. Don't be so quick to send a fellow
to the mission field. Lay hands suddenly on nobody. Nobody. Nobody. Neither be partakers
of other men's sins in that regard. Keep thyself pure. That's what
he's talking about. Let a man first be proven and
tried. That's what he's saying. That's
the church's business. Don't be in such a hurry to turn
the reins of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ over to unproven
men, untrained soldiers. Look at Titus 3. What I'm saying
here is that all are in the ministry, and secondly, every one of us
are guardians of this truth, guardians of the gospel. Guardians
of the of the gospel of our Lord Titus 3 verse 9 look at this Avoid foolish questions and genealogies
and contentions Strivings about the law don't don't get an argument
over those things just avoid them for the unprofitable in
vain a Man that is a heretic after you've warned him twice
just reject him See, after the first admonition and the second
admonition, he will not hear, and we're talking about in the
gospel now. Avoid it. That's what it says here, just
reject it. Knowing that he that is such is subverted and sinneth,
being condemned of himself. Now let me trouble you with one
other scripture, 2 Thessalonians 3. 2 Thessalonians chapter 3. 2 Thessalonians 3, verse 14. Now, you notice in verse 13,
he says, "...Brandon, be not weary in well-doing." Share, help one another. You
know, the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ doesn't make a man
hard. It doesn't make a man ungracious and ungenerous. It
makes him gracious and generous. He's kind, and he's considerate,
and he's cooperative, and he wants to help people. And he
never gets weary in well-doing. But when it comes to the glory
and honor of his Lord in redemption, he will not compromise. This
is what he will not be in. See, be not weary in well-doing.
Now, what's the next verse? And if any obey not our word
by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him,
that he be ashamed." Here's a man that is most generous
and kind, even to sinners, even to unbelievers. And he gives
of himself, and he gives of his means, and he's tender and patient
and long-suffering and generous in every respect. But when men
lay their hands, their filthy hands, on that gospel which is
dearest to the heart of God, on that atonement, on that blood,
on that character and glory of our Lord Jesus Christ, that generous,
gracious, kind believer gets mad. He gets upset. God does. When Aaron's sons,
Nadab and Bahu, brought strange fire, God killed them. God killed
him. When Uzziah reached up and touched
the ark, God killed him. And the Lord God, I believe,
in His kindness and mercy, He's gracious and kind and merciful
to all His works. Even when Moses smote the rock,
God killed him. Even when King Uzziah When King
Uzziah went into the temple, as fine a king as he had been,
as perfect a leader as he had been, when he went into the temple
to sacrifice, God killed him. And this is what I'm talking
about. If this gospel is the gospel, and it is, then Paul says here, now look
at our text again, let me just show it to you briefly, in 2
Timothy. Chapter 4, Paul said, I charge
thee, I charge thee therefore before God, before God. You see there, in the very presence
of God, in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. We're not
talking here about coming before some Sanhedrin of human being. We're not talking about acceptance
with a denomination. We're not talking about making
a name or a place for ourselves. We're not talking about saving
the democratic process and bringing peace to the world. We're talking
about, I charge you before God Almighty, before the High Court. We're talking about a believer's
responsibility before Almighty God. I charge you before God
Almighty, Paul says, preach the Word. I'll charge you. And you know, this is something
that I may bring out to all those missionaries I'll be speaking
to a week from next Sunday. There are a thousand. You know,
Paul says, I'll charge you before the heavenly court, before God
Himself, before our Lord Jesus Christ. Preach the gospel. Preach the Word. Preach the Word. Preach the message. There are
a thousand causes and promotions and interests to divert us from
the gospel, and Satan is a master at turning men away from the
gospel for good reasons. But he says here, you be instant,
you be alert, you be steadfast, keep your sense of urgency to
preach the gospel, wait a minute, in season and out of season.
In other words, he's saying there is no season for preaching the
gospel. Every season is a season for
preaching the gospel. Whether the occasion is favorable
or unfavorable, whether it's convenient or inconvenient, whether
it's welcome or unwelcome, preach the gospel. Whether men like
it or don't like it. And reprove and rebuke those
who stray from the gospel. and exhort them with patience
and doctrine. Now watch verse 3. For he said,
I'm telling you the time will come when men will not endure
sound doctrine. If that's not our day, then I
know nothing about the signs of the times. Men today will
not endure sound doctrine. They won't tolerate doctrine
at all. any kind of doctrine. You listen
to the average preacher to which you're exposed and find any definition
of doctrine whatsoever in what he's preaching. I'd like to hear
it, just any definition. You talk about these fellows
that are preaching, you name them, I don't need to, but there's
no definition of doctrine at all. It's sort of like Brother L.R.
Shelton used to say, it's kind of an old Mother Hubbard that
covers everything and touches nothing. Now, we are dedicated to the
doctrine of creation without apology. The doctrine of creation. We understand that the world
were framed by the Word of God. Defined clearly. We are dedicated
to the doctrine of a fall. What happened in the garden?
Original sin. I mean to define it. To define
it and set it forth. Man's will is a fallen will.
The will is not free. I don't care what anybody says,
the will is free to do what it can do. Man's will is free only to act
according to his nature. And his nature is a fallen nature. And therefore his will is in
bondage to his nature. It's a diseased will, a corrupt
will, a fallen will, a will in bondage, and we need to define
it. And the doctrine of covenant
election and God's sovereignty and salvation. Preachers talk
about preaching without using terms. You've got to use the
terms God uses. The doctrine of the virgin birth
and the incarnation of the Son of God, the infallible scriptures,
regeneration, the new birth, these things are not defined,
imputed righteousness. The doctrine of substitution
and effectual atonement, an atonement that atones, a redemption that
redeems, a ransom that ransoms. The doctrine of preservation.
He that hath begun a good work in you will finish it. He cannot
fail. He will not be disappointed.
The doctrine of a new creature in Christ Jesus, men who are
saved love God and they love others. There's a remarkable
change that's come into a man's life who's met God. The doctrine
of resurrection, the doctrine of life after death, and death
after life. He said, they're not going to
endure these doctrines, nor the definition of them. He said,
well, we need to preach Christ. You can't preach Christ without
preaching His doctrines. What we're talking about is the
doctrine of Christ. You can't preach what the teacher
says without preaching what the teacher says. And he says in verse 3 here,
they're not going to endure sound doctrines. But after their own
desires, to satisfy their desires, they shall heap to themselves...
They're going to go out and get preachers who will satisfy their
desires and approve of the errors which they hold. They're going to heap to themselves
teachers, preachers having itching ears. And they literally will
turn away their ears from the truth. They will not hear it.
Like the woman said to John, don't worry about me. I'll make
it to heaven one way or the other. Don't trouble me. Don't question
my profession. Don't question what I've been
taught all my life. Don't question my denomination.
I'm not questioning yours. I'm questioning mine and yours.
Everybody's. I don't want a person to miss
Christ being unworn. And that's the reason he says
here in verse 5, now watch this, and I'll try to wind her down.
But now Timothy, and I've showed you that he's not just talking
to Timothy, he's talking to you too, and me, and every believer,
the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Watch thou in all things,
and the writers say this, keep amid it all, keep calm. and cool
and keep your head and be deliberate and dedicated amid all this to
preaching the truth. It'll cost you because you'll
have to endure afflictions. You run a business, there are
people who won't do business with you. That's right, like if you teach
a class somewhere, there are people who won't come to your
class. You work on cars, Paul, if people
won't bring you their cars. You pastor a church, if people
won't come hear you preach, they'll lie on you, they'll say you're
preaching what you're not preaching. That's right, there are folks
who walk down the street and won't speak to you. But endure
afflictions, be ready to take whatever comes your way, hardship.
And I'm saying not for your contrariness, but for the gospel. God doesn't bless any man who's
persecuted for his own orneriness But God will bless a man who's
persecuted for a stand on the gospel The gospel And he says
do the work of an evangelist now here's there's God's got
some sheep out there and Somehow other I just don't believe that
God's sheep are going to be converted listening to Aaron I just don't
believe it. I just can't, to save my life,
believe that God's sheep are going to be brought to knowledge
of Christ hearing a false gospel, a gospel of do-it-yourself religion. So we've got to do the work of
an evangelist. God has some sheep out there.
And we have this pulpit ministry. God has blessed the 13th Street
Baptist Church in an enormous fashion, in a most unusual fashion. Most unusual. We're few in number,
but it's a powerful influence that God has given. Well, He
used 12 apostles. He used one man, John Knox, to
shake Scotland. And I could go on telling, He
used one man to deliver 3 million people out of Egypt. And God
can take a little church in a small town in eastern Kentucky, And
through its pulpit ministry and through its Bible conferences,
through its tape ministry all around the world, there's some dear friends up
in Colorado who've been getting tapes. John Schultz introduced
our tapes to Bob and Winnie Crowley, who have introduced our tapes
to 40 different people up in Colorado and Oregon. And they've invited me to come
up in January and preach to 80 people who are thinking about
forming a church, preaching the grace of God.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
