I don't mind telling you, and
I don't think I'm a lot different from other professing Christians,
and I don't think my experience is much unlike yours, who were brought up in the church,
in religion, who made professions of faith early in life, I don't
mind telling you that it has taken me a long, long time to
learn the truth of Colossians 3 verse 17. Whatever you do in
word or deed, do it in the name of Jesus Christ. Now the truth
of that I have learned I had took a while to learn that. I
learned the truth of it. It dawned on me one day what
God was saying there. The practice of it I'm seeking. I wouldn't dare publicly own
in the presence of God and human witnesses that I have learned
this lesson. I know the truth of it. That
whatever I am doing in word or deed is to be done for the glory
of God in the name of Jesus Christ. To say I have learned that lesson
would make me a fool. I've learned the truth of it.
The practice of it I'm seeking. Far. When I learn the truth of
it in experience and practice, God will save me from myself. And God will make me his child
and God will assure me of everlasting life. Now he said that. To as many as received him, to
them gave he the privilege, the right to become sons of God,
even to them that believe on his name, on his name. Whosoever shall call on the name
of the Son of God shall be saved without question, without doubt.
Any man who can call on the name of the Son of God, who understands
that name, who has to some extent experienced the power and authority
of that name, shall be saved. Shall be saved. And then I'll tell you something
else. God will hear me when I pray. Not just once in a while. all
the time. If I ever learn by experience
what it means to covet what I desire for the glory of God and to do
what I do and ask what I ask only in the name of Jesus Christ,
God will hear me when I pray. I'll show you that. Turn to Matthew
18. Matthew 18. Now, sometimes we wonder what
these scriptures mean. Now, you've read this so many
times in your lives, and I have too, and we falter a little bit
on what they mean. They mean exactly what He says.
But we're missing something in the verse. Now listen to it,
Matthew 18, 20. I'm assured of His presence where
two or three, in verse Verse 20, where two or three
are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. And now turn to John chapter
14. Now listen to this, John 14. John 14, verse 13. And whatsoever you ask in my
name, that will I do. that the Father may be glorified
in the Son. You see what I'm saying? Whatever
you do in word or deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus
Christ. If you can do that, if God has
enabled you by experience to do that, you're assured of redemption. And secondly, you're assured
of God's presence. And thirdly, you're assured of
answered prayer. Because when you meet, it'll
be in His name and for His glory and He must be there. And when
you pray, whatever you ask for, or whatever you seek, it's not
for a selfish purpose or selfish motive, it's in His name. Peter
stopped before the gate called Beautiful and said to a man,
in the name of Jesus Christ, rise up and walk. And he rose
and walked. He said, silver and gold have I none, but such as
I have given to thee. My desire and my request is in
the name of Jesus Christ, solely, wholly, completely, for no other
reason than His name might be glorified. The man got up and
walked. And God will bless my works,
turn to Mark 9. If I can come to understand what
this means, that whatever I do, whatever I do, in word or deed,
is in the name of Jesus Christ, solely for His glory, solely
for His honor, solely and completely, that His name might be magnified. But God will be there. There
ain't no question about that. He's going to be there. He said
where two or three are met in my name, it's not the number,
it's the power of my name. And if a man can on his knees
pray for God to bless him in what he does, or what he gives,
or what he says, or where he goes, or to whom he witnesses,
and Lord do it in the name of Jesus Christ, for the glory of
Jesus Christ, whole and complete, I guarantee you God will bless
you. He said he would, that's what he said, in my name. But
here's where we... There's a little bit or a whole
lot of me in that thing. And there's a little bit or a
whole lot of some other motive in that thing. There's a little
bit or a whole lot of some other reason in that thing other than
in the name of and for the glory of the Son of God. If these folks,
Joe down in Orange Park, I guarantee if that gathering is in the name
of Christ, God will bless you. I guarantee it. If it's not,
God's not going to bless you. Why should He? It's not for His
glory. Listen to this. Mark 9, verse
41. What? Whosoever shall give you
a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ. Verily I say unto you, he shall
not lose his reward. What a simple task. Not building
a great temple or cathedral, not winning a thousand souls
to Jesus, not giving the largest offering that was taken that
month, it's doing, just handing a glass of cold water in the
name of Jesus Christ. You think about that. Such a
simple thing, and yet it was done. It's not what he did, why
he did it. It's why he did it. Let's don't
quit there, let's go on. Let's turn to Matthew 19, see
another promise, Matthew 19, verse 29. Whatever sacrifice
I make, leaving my home, leaving my family, one time I did this, Darth and
I were raised not in Ashland, Kentucky, but in another part
of the country. We were called to come five or six hundred miles
from home to live and have a ministry. I don't know whether I did it
in the name of Christ, or ambition, or the desire to be a preacher,
or what. But I do promise you this, if
a man does something like that in Christ's name, God will bless
him a hundredfold. Read verse 29, and every one
that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father,
or mother, or wife, or children of land, for my name's sake,
he shall receive a hundredfold and shall inherit everlasting
life." I wish I believed that every one of the missionaries
we helped go to the field only in the name of Jesus Christ.
Now, if they did, God had blessed their ministry. He blesses everything
that's done in the name of his Son. It's not what you do. Though I speak with the tongues
of men and of angels, and have not love, I'm a sounding brass
for tinkling cymbals. I may be the most gifted orator
in the world, but if I cannot for love of Christ and love of
God the Father preach, you might as well hit a sounding brass
or tinkle a cymbal, though I have the gift of prophecy and understand
all mysteries and all knowledge. And I have a lot of preachers
that they're trying to see who can get the biggest library.
Won't do them any good. They can learn everything in
those books that all these old Puritans ever wrote. But if they
cannot go and preach and witness and teach and write in the name
of Jesus Christ, they're wasting their time. And though I give
my body to be burned, and my goods to feed the poor, and have
not love, motivated by the love of Christ, I'm nothing. Nothing. One more. Look at Luke
21. Luke chapter 21. And there are
folks that are being persecuted for what they believe. But if
it's not in the name of Christ and for the glory of Christ,
you're wasting your time. In Luke 21, verse 12, he says,
But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute
you, and deliver you into prisons, being brought before kings and
rulers for my name's sake. If that's what it's for, it'll
turn to you for testimony. God bless you. So the key to
every promise and the key to every provision is not so much
what I do, why I do it. That's the key. Why, why, why?
In whose name? For whose glory? For his namesake? In the name of Christ? Now, if
you'll go through the New Testament You'll find our Lord exposing
and condemning religious men for evil motives and selfish
motives. Let's find a few. Matthew chapter
6. Matthew the sixth chapter. And I'll tell you this. It would
do well for preacher, elders, deacons, those who've been in
the church for years and those who haven't been there very long. It would do well for every one
of us to carefully examine ourselves in the light of these scriptures.
Whatever you do, in word or deed, do it in the name of Jesus Christ,
for the glory of God. Matthew 6, our Lord said, verse
1, Take heed that you do not your alms, works, or righteousness
before men to be seen of them. If that's why you, it doesn't
matter what you do, If it's done to be heard, or to be seen, or
to be recognized, or to be received, praise for men. You have no reward
of your Father which is in heaven, none whatsoever. And then verse 5, And when you
pray, do not be as the hypocrites. They love to pray standing in
the synagogues, in the corners of the streets, that they may
be seen of men, that men may acknowledge their prayer time
and holiness and dedication and consecration. Verily I say unto
you, they already have their reward. When men see them and
praise them and brag on them, that's it. That's all they're
ever going to get. And then in John chapter 2, John the second chapter, our
Lord points out this motivation. which is an evil motive, in John
chapter 2 verse 23. Now when he was at Jerusalem
at the Passover and the feast day, many believed in his name
when they saw the miracles which he did. They were convinced by
the wonder and the miracle. How astounding that this supernatural
thing has come to pass. I'm convinced on the basis of
this sign or this miracle. But Jesus did not commit himself
unto them, for he knew all men, and needed not that any should
testify of man, he knew what was in man. He knew the motive. He knew why these people were
gathered around him, why they were cheering him on, why they
were crying Hosanna to the name of him who cometh in the name
of the Lord. He knew all that. He recognized it. And then in
John chapter 6 verse 25, let's look at another one, John 6,
25. And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they
said to him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? And he answered
and said, Verily I say unto you, you seek me not because you saw
the miracle. You seek me because you did eat
of the loaves and were filled. You seek me, the motive is to
get what you can get out of me. You did eat and you were filled
and satisfied and you come because of what I can supply you with.
And then in Matthew 23, 15, here's another evil motive exposed.
In Matthew 23, 15, the motive for making religious converts.
In Matthew 23, 15, what is our motive for witnessing, preaching,
testifying, convincing men of the way, we say, of life? He
said, Woe unto you scribes, Pharisees, hypocrites! You compass sea and
land to make one proselyte. Proselyte to what? To their doctrines,
to their orthodoxy, to their way of thinking, to their denomination,
to their religious institution. And after you've made him, you
make him two-fold more the child of hell than yourself. And then
in Matthew 23 verse 30, Verse 29, our Lord said you brag on
dead prophets and kill living prophets. You brag on dead prophets. You brag on dead preachers. You brag on dead apostles. Woe
unto you scribes, Pharisees, hypocrites. Because you build
the tombs of the prophets and garnish the sepulchre of the
righteous, those that are already dead, you brag on them. But verse
34, I send you prophets and wise men and scribes and some of them
you kill and some you crucify and some you scourge in your
synagogue and persecute from city to city. You brag on the
dead prophets and you ignore the living prophets. My friends, there's never been
a shortage of religious leaders. We've got plenty of religious
leaders. There's never been a shortage of preachers. There are preachers
all over this world. There are preachers all over
the United States, as many preachers as there are lawyers. We've never been without religious
institutions and programs and revivals, and there's no shortage
now. Religion is on the rampage. But men and women who are bodily united with the
living Lord, men and women who are crucified with Christ, men
and women who know what John meant when he said, he must decrease
and I must increase. Men and women whose one goal
is to win Christ and be found in Him. Men and women whose one
goal is to know Him and the power of His resurrected life. Men
and women who know how to be abased and how to abound. Men
and women who are willing to speak or to be silent. Who are
willing to sing or to weep. Who are willing to run or to
stand still. Who are willing to give or receive. Who are willing to eat or fast.
Who are willing to succeed or suffer. in the name of Jesus
Christ. For the glory of Jesus Christ
are as few as they've ever been. That's so. Listen to some of these verses.
Matthew 7, 14. I'll just read it. You don't
take the time to turn. You know them anyway. Straight
is the gate, narrow is the way, and do you there be that find
it? Matthew 9.37, the harvest is
plenty, but the laborers are few. Matthew 20.16, many a call,
few are chosen. Luke 13.23, Lord, are there few
that be saved? And he said to them, strive to
enter in at the straight gate, for many, I say unto you, will
seek to enter in and shall not be able. I'm convinced and I'm persuaded
that the difference is right here in this verse, Colossians
3, 17, my text. And whatever you do, there's
plenty of doing going on. But is it in the name of Jesus
Christ? Whatever you do, There are plenty
of words. There are words everywhere. You
can't turn the radio on and go across the dial without finding
a preacher. Then why are we not in revival? You can hardly turn the dial
without finding somebody praying. Then why aren't the blessings
falling? Elijah was a man of like passions. He prayed that
didn't rain for three and a half years. I'll tell you where the, God
has promised, whatsoever you ask, in my name I'll do it. Where
two or three are met, in my name I'll be there. Give a cup of
water, in my name you won't lose your reward. Leave houses, homes,
mother, father, in my name and I'll bless you a hundred fold.
Well we're giving the water and we're praying and we're preaching
and we're leaving home but in whose name? And for whose glory? That's what's got to be decided,
that's the whole issue. Who sent me? I ran, who sent
me? I spoke, who sent me? Who told
me to? A religious profession, I'm convinced
that the difference in a religious profession and true salvation
is not in the making of the profession, but in the reason why it was
made. What is important? But why is
more important? I call on the Lord. Why? I'm convinced that the difference
in a prayer heard and a prayer refused is not in the what, it's
in the why. Why did I ask that? Why did I
request that? Why did I petition that? Why
did I seek that? Anything too hard for God, God
can do anything. He will do anything for his namesake
and for his glory. But I wonder how often, I just
wonder and I'm examining my own motives, how often are my prayers
and my desires and my petitions only considering one thing, the
ultimate glory of my God. I'm convinced the difference
in a testimony that will be blessed and one that will be is in why
and not what was said. Our Lord can take the most stumbling,
fumbling person in the world and anoint
those fumbling, stumbling words with the power of his Spirit
and bring a nation to its knees. He said, he said, he uses the
foolish to bring to nothing the wise, he uses the base to bring
to nothing the things that are. He uses the weak to bring to
nothing the strong, that no flesh should glow in his presence.
And we know those things in our heads. I'm convinced, I'm persuaded
that the difference in a ministry or a work that is owned and blessed
of God and one that is in the energy of the flesh is why it's
being carried on. Why? I'm convinced the difference
in a song, the difference in a gift, the difference in a word
of advice or rebuke or encouragement is why it was given, why it was
rendered. If it was motivated by love for
the Lord Jesus Christ, the simplest thing, if any man give a cup
of cold water in my name, I'm convinced taking care of
babies in a nursery, if it could be done in the name of Jesus
Christ. Fixing a meal for a hungry guest,
if it could be done in the name. Opening our door and inviting
in a fellow Christian, if it could be done, I bid thee welcome
in the name of Jesus Christ. My home is your home in the name
of Jesus Christ. Just the simplest little thing.
would be worth 10,000 gifts with the wrong motive. I think that's
the reason he took such a simple thing as a cup of cold water. And I wonder just how much of
our religious ado is really motivated by the desire to glorify God. Well, let's look at the text
and let me point out some things, three or four things that I think
are important. You do what you want to with
this. I find my greatest difficulty in this area, I find the greatest
struggle, I find it the most difficult lesson to learn. We
have so much self in us, I, me, mine, ours, So little deep concern for Christ's
glory and for his matchless name. Our Lord gives us scriptures.
It's more blessed to give than to receive. He gives us scriptures
like that and we file them away in our catechisms and creeds
and refer to them occasionally when we want to appear to be
religious, but day by day. It's a selfish world. It's living
in a little circle of my own needs. One of the best ways I know to
meet your need is to meet somebody else's. One of the best ways
I know, taught in the Word of God, to make yourself happy is
to make somebody else happy. We know all that in our heads,
but we never learned it in our hearts. The first thing is this,
in Colossians 3, 17, whatever you do, in word or deed, do it
in the name of the Lord Jesus. Now, first of all, this can only
be done by a believer, and no unbeliever can do this. This
is only to a believer. You've got to be in Christ before
you can do anything in the name of Christ. That could be the
trouble. Don't dismiss it from your mind. That could be the
trouble. There's one thing for sure, the
root has to be changed before the fruit will appear. That's
for sure. You can hang fruit on a lifeless
branch, but that won't give the tree life. You can go over there
and find that old dead tree and hang apples all over it, but
that won't make the tree live. Everybody will think it's a living
tree, but it won't be. But if there's life in the root
and self in the branches, there'll be fruit on the branches. That's
evidence that there's life in the tree. The inner life must
be planted before the outer life can be lived. Christ must be
formed in me before Christ can be lived through me. I can't
do anything in the name of one whom I do not know. So that's
the first requirement, to know Christ. I can't be motivated
by a love for Christ which I do not have. a concern for his glory
which I do not know, and a desire for the accomplishment of his
purpose from which I am a stranger. So that's the first thing. This
can only be done by a believer. Secondly, what we do is to be
done through the office and the name of Christ, our mediator. What am I saying? I'm saying
this. Tonight we can offer praise to God in the name of Christ.
But no praise of ours will be holy, and no praise of ours will
be sweet, and no praise of ours will be accepted of God unless
it is through Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest. God does not
speak to me except through Christ, and I do not speak to God except
through Christ. Christ is the Great High Priest.
He is the Mediator. I am the way, the truth, and
the light, and no man cometh to the Father but by me," Christ
said. He is our mediator. And we pray, but our supplications
are useless words unless those supplications and thanksgivings
and petitions are in and through and by our intercessor. And we serve our Lord God according
to the abilities with which he has entrusted us, but this service
is blessed and received only through Jesus Christ, because
our sinful nature pollutes everything that we do, and Christ's blood
has to make it holy. He has to purify even the purest
prayer. He has to purify even the best
work, because our flesh has polluted it. If I give to God all the
wealth I possess, and I give to God all the time allotted
in my life, and I give to God all the talents that I have,
if these do not come through Christ and for the glory of Christ,
it is as if I had done nothing. That's so. Listen to this old
hymn, just a verse. The sinfulness of all our holy
things is cleansed by his blood, which covers all. And his blood
adds a rich perfume, divinely sweet, making them acceptable
at the throne of God. So what we do has to be done
first of all by a believer, and secondly it has to be done through
Christ the Mediator. Then thirdly, now watch this.
What we do is done under the authority of Jesus Christ, our
Lord and King. Now there are plenty of self-appointed
secretaries in religious communities who take upon themselves the
privilege of distributing the authority of Christ. Listen to
this Luke chapter 9. Turn over there a moment. Luke
the ninth chapter. But what I'm saying to you is
this. You do what your Lord commands you to do. And you avoid and
leave off what your Lord has not commanded you to do or to
say. But find the will of the Lord.
His is the authority. It's not what I think you should
do or what the deacons think you should do or the elders think
you should do or your parents think you should do. Christ is
our authority. In Luke 9 verse 49, and John
answered and said, We saw one casting out devils in your name
and we forbade him because he followed not with us. Jesus said
forbid him not. He that is not against us is
followed. But he's not in our crowd. But he's not in our denomination. But he's not in our church. But
he's not of our doctrinal persuasion along certain lines. Christ said
if he's not against me, he's following me. Christ is the sole
authority. Christ is my authority. I do
what the Lord has commanded me to do. He said all authority
is given unto me. And his word is my guide. His word. His word. You know I'm far studying
and reading good books. But I like what Brother Barnard
said in a recent edition of our paper. Maybe the day is near
upon us. when the people of God will lay
aside some of these good books and take out again the book of
books and make much of it. Christ is our authority. Bishop
Ryle is great, read him, he's a blessing, but he had error. Charles Spurgeon is great, but
he had error. John Gill is, I guess, one of the greatest
that he had ever. And that goes for me and you
too. No man can be followed fully. Our confidence is in Christ and
our authority comes only from Christ. And if it's not in God's
Word, we cannot do it in the name of Christ. No matter how
sincere we might be or No matter how zealous we may be, it's got
to be according to his word. He is the authority. And then
next of all, listen to this now. What we do in the name of Christ
must be done in the strength of Christ. No, without me you
can do nothing. That's what he said. The Apostle
Paul talked about the ministry and the awesome responsibility
and the fearful responsibility of the ministry, preaching the
word. And then he said, who is sufficient
for these things? But he turned right around and
said, our sufficiency is Christ. If I can lay hold on Christ,
if I can have Christ as my energizer, if I can have Christ as my strength,
If I can have Christ as my, as Spurgeon said, enabler, if I
can get out of myself and out of my strength and out of my
intellect and out of my wisdom and out of my self-confidence
and totally and completely in Christ, then I shall succeed
in whatever task. I can do all things through Christ
who strengthens me. I just can't get the victory
over my temper. Oh yes I can, in Christ. I just can't, I just can't seem
to come to this particular place that I feel that I ought to. Why do you want to get there?
Why do you want to get there? Well, I think I want to get there
for the glory of God. I think I want to get there in
the name of Christ. You can do it. If you can do
it in Christ. Yes, but there's no love in me. There's no love in my natural
heart. There's no love in any man by nature. The love of God
is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. There's no
mercy or grace or kindness or faith or humility in any human
heart. Not by nature. If there's any
grace or fruit of faith, it's Christ. That's right. Listen to this, if I see any
merit in what I do, I've done it in vain. If I feel any ability
for the task, better let somebody else do it. That's right. If I boast of any holiness of
my own, it's iniquity. I like what that old writer and
some of these old fellas, we can learn from them. I would,
but cannot seem. I would, but cannot pray. My
flesh meets me when I try and drives my soul away. I would,
but can't repent. Though I endeavor oft, this stony
heart can never relent unless the Lord makes it soft. I would,
but cannot love. Though shown by love divine,
no arguments has power to move this stone-cold heart of mine. I would but cannot rest in God's
most holy will. I know what he appoints is best,
but I murmur at it still. O could I but believe, then all
would easy be. I would but cannot, Lord, relieve. My help must come from Thee.
Will Thou not crown at length the work Thou hast begun, and
with a will afford me strength in all Thy ways to run? I know it's easy, they tell me.
All you got to do is believe you're a sinner and that Christ
died on the cross and come down now and shake the preacher's
hand and get baptized. You're fixed up, that's what
they tell me. And then I run into verses like this, and whatever
you do in word or deed, do it in the name of Jesus Christ.
Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it for the
glory of God. And then I realized somebody
threw me a curve and struck me out. They weren't honest with
me. They weren't honest with me.
And men and women try to live what they call a Christian life
without Christ. They try to walk the way without
knowing the way. Oh, it's easy if you know the
way. Anything's easy if you know the way. What we do, last of all, will
be motivated by a fourfold, a fourfold purpose. And listen to these four. This
is something Mr. Spurgeon gave that I've changed
one word, but I think it's, I think it improved on it a little bit.
The first word is love. Love for Christ. He says we love
much when we realize we've been forgiven much. We love much. And the second word is gratitude.
But for his grace I'd be in hell. Think about that. But for his
grace I'd be in hell. That'll help us to do things
in his name, wouldn't it? Justice. That's the third word,
justice. He's worthy of glory. He's worthy
of all the praise and all the glory. Christ is worthy. He's
worthy of all that I am and all that I have. He's worthy. of
my eternal adoration. He's worthy. Worthy is the Lamb. And then the last word is desperation. Lord, to whom shall I go? To whom shall I go? I don't have
anywhere else to turn. There are plenty of places to
turn, but they don't have the words of life. To whom shall
I go? Thou hast the words of eternal
life. Brethren, let me ask you something,
just quietly and confidentially. What do these verses mean? If
this thing of salvation is, as the religionist and revivalist
of today say, all you do is just make a profession or decision,
get fixed up, what do these verses mean that talk about strive to
enter in? The kingdom of heaven suffered
violence and the violent take it by force. What do these verses
mean if any man loved mother, father, husband, wife, brother,
sister more than me, he's not worthy of me? What do these verses
mean that say if any man does not take up his cross and follow
after me, cannot be my disciple? What do these verses mean that
say if any man turns and looks back, he's not
fit for the kingdom of God? Well, I think I know what they
mean. I think they mean exactly what
they're saying, that this thing of salvation is not a convenience,
it's a consecration. This thing of salvation is not
just a creed, it's a new creation. This thing of salvation is not
just a profession, it's a regeneration. If God's done a miracle, God's
changed a heart, a stony heart into a heart of flesh. God has
made a man or a woman over again. God has put Christ in his heart,
and he's dedicated and devoted to a person, the Son of God. No, he's far from perfect, and
he knows it. He counts not himself to have
apprehended, but this one thing he does, forgetting those things
which are behind, he presses forward towards the mark of the
prize of the high calling of God in Jesus Christ. Christ is
his Lord. Christ is his Lord. And it's
not just a profession. It's not just, well, if I die,
I'm going to heaven. If I have Christ, I already have
heaven. I'm as much there as I'll ever
be, spiritually. That's right. I'm seated with
Christ, positionally, on the right hand of God, if I have
Christ. Whatever you do, The why, the why, why, why. They
were brought their offerings and Christ took notice of one
little offering of two pennies. Two little pennies. And he called
attention of the illustrious twelve to those two pennies. Boy, I tell you, we wouldn't
have noticed that too much, not with all these crayons over here.
But the Master did. He said, look at that. See those
two pennies? She gave all she had. Our Heavenly Father, Thou art
merciful and gracious and kind toward us. There's enough sin in the prayers
we've prayed to damn us to eternal condemnation. There's enough
sin in the gifts we've given and the speeches we've made and
the sermons we've preached and the songs we've sung, motivated
by too many things other than the glory of Christ Jesus. And
yet we've expected you to bless and we've called on you to honor
what you will not honor. Teach us what this means. Make
of this church a great church. And it will be if it's brought
together and meets together and walks together in the name of
Jesus Christ. And make of thy servants here
great preachers. And we will be. We may preach
to a few, but we'll be great prophets of God. if we can preach
in the name of Jesus Christ. And make of thy people a great
people, a people with peace in their hearts and rest in their
souls and joy on their lips, because we have a great Savior
who redeems great sinners, who is plenteous in mercy, who forgiveth
our iniquities, who healeth our diseases, who satisfies our mouth
with good

About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
