Now if you will turn back to
Ephesians chapter 3, I want to read my text again. Verse 14 will be the text. For this cause I bow my knees
unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now, Chapter 2 and Chapter 3
of Ephesians ought never to have been divided. I don't have time
to develop the message tonight and read both of these chapters,
but I think it's one of the... This chapter division is definitely
one of those that should not have occurred in the translations,
and you'll see that if you'll read it yourself. For these two
chapters are so much one thought and one message that it really
requires both chapters to understand what Paul's talking about when
he says, for this cause I bow my knee to the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ. We'll go back, if you will, to
chapter 2 and look at several things. He says, for this cause,
and I said that also in chapter 3, verse 1. For this cause. Now look at verse 1 of chapter
2. And you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and
sin. For this cause I bow my knee
in thanksgiving to the Father, the Lord of our Lord Jesus Christ. Verse 2, wherein in times past
ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the
prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in
the children of disobedience. among whom also we all had our
conversation in times past in the lust of our flesh fulfilling
the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature
children of wrath even as others but god quickened us but god
who is rich in mercy for his great love wherewith he loved
us even when we were dead in sin quickened us for this cause
i bow my knees to the father of our lord jesus christ a man about 40 years of age who
is in the penitentiary up in Chillicothe, Ohio, who has become
a very close personal friend of mine. He was a former heavyweight
boxing champion in the state of West Virginia. He won 29 fights
and lost three. He was convicted of murder and
sentenced to life. And I went up to a penitentiary
in Lucasville and preached one time, and he heard the gospel. This has been three years ago.
And I believe God did a work of grace in his heart. And he
has written to me on the average of once a week for these three
years. I write to him almost every week. I sent him a set of Spurgeon's
sermons, volumes one through six. He studies those sermons. And his letters have developed
so much in growth, in grace, that I believe God's done something
for him. Now, there were several other men who heard me preach
in these prison services where I visited some years ago, and
they've heard me preach on the radio and the television. But
it seems like God has not done something for them like he's
done for Tom. I want to read you just a part
of his letter here. He starts out, Greetings, my
friend. I'm always enthused to hear from
you. You have practically adopted
me as one of your very own from the kindness of God. And God
has empowered you to bestow on me his grace. There's no love
so unique I cherish such as yours. But this is what he says. I recall
you telling me how you preached in a certain place, and people
couldn't understand what you were preaching. Do you know why? Now he's going to preach to me,
and I want you to listen to this. What Paul is saying here in Ephesians
2, Ephesians 3, I bow my knee to God. who's the father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, for this cause, that he quickened you who were
dead in trespasses and sin, that he was pleased to, down in the
dunghill, in the cesspool of iniquity where he found you,
he may have passed by your companions in sin, he may have passed by
your comrades in evil, but he quickened you. You were a child
of wrath, even as others. You were fulfilling the lust
of the mind, and the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life,
and a child of wrath. But God quickened you. You know
why he said people don't understand what you're preaching? Listen
to it. Our hearts are like stone. Every
man born into this world is dead until God's presence becomes
a part of his life. People were walking around dead
when Christ walked this earth, dead. It says in John 5, 25,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, the hour is coming, and now is
when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God. I believe
in my heart that I've heard the voice of the Son of God." Doesn't that thrill you? And
while in a prison cell, any man who's never heard the
gospel is living in the valley of dry bones, and this world
is full of them. Brother Henry, I thank you for
your kindness to share my ups and downs and to help me in my
hours of unbelief. But I truly believe joy will
come for me some morning. And I'm going to get rid of this
old feeble, sickly, corrupted body and look to the mercy of
Christ. There's nothing in this world
for me. May the Lord May the love of Jesus Christ richly bless
you forevermore and send you sweet precious memories of good
things to come. Now that's what Paul's talking
about here. He says, for this cause I bow
my knee to God because he quickened you who were dead, dead. in trespasses, a nothing, a nobody,
from nowhere, going nowhere, and God quickly made you alive. That's what he's talking about
there. And then he goes on and he says in verse 13, verse 11,
remember that you being in times past were Gentiles in the flesh. Not only were you dead in sin,
but you were Gentiles. Now do you know what a Gentile
is? It's a pagan. a pagan. God chose a people back
yonder, made Abraham the father of a nation. And you weren't
in that nation, I wasn't either. And he gave to that nation the
law, he gave to that nation the sacrifices, he gave to that nation
the prophets, he gave to that nation the ordinances, the tabernacle,
and his presence, the Jews. And we weren't of that nation.
We not only were dead in sin, but we were not of Israel. That's
what Paul says. Remember, you being in times
past, Gentiles in the flesh, called uncircumcision by that
which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands. At
that time, you were without Christ, even typically. You were aliens
from the commonwealth of Israel. You were strangers from the covenants
of promise. having no hope and without God
in this world. But now, but now, in Christ Jesus,
you who were at one time far off, are made nigh by the blood
of Christ, for He's our peace. And for this, I thank God. He is our peace, who has made
both one, now watch verse 14, and broken down that middle wall
of partition between Jew and Gentile, Now in Christ is neither
Jew nor Gentile, bond nor free, male nor female, having abolished
in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained
in the ordinances, to make in himself of the two, Jew and Gentile,
one man, one man, that he might reconcile both unto God in one
body by the cross. having slain the enmity thereby. For this reason, I thank God. I thank God. Now, verse 19, you're
no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens. We're the
saints and of the household of God, and are built upon the foundation
of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the
chief cornerstone. In whom all the buildings, Jew
and Gentile, bond and free, fitly framed together, groweth unto
a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are built together
for the habitation of God through the Spirit, and for this cause,
our Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ, for you Gentiles, if
you've heard of the dispensation of the grace of God committed
to me, how that he revealed the gospel to me, verse 6, that you
might be fellow heirs, that you might hear that gospel. and be
of the same body and partakers of the promise of the gospel."
See how it should never be divided? Got the same subject, same thought,
presenting the same thought, same message. For this cause,
verse 14, I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ. Now, I divide this into two points. First of all, he's giving thanks
that God quickens sinners like we are. that God made pagans
and Gentiles a part of that precious, blessed family that he made of
one, both Jew and Gentile. But then he says in verse 14,
I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of
whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. They're all
written in the same Lamb's Book of Life They're all quickened
by the same Holy Spirit. They're all redeemed by the blood
of Christ. They're all called to faith by the same Spirit.
And he offers a five-fold prayer for them. This is what I wanted
to get on, this prayer for the believer. In verse 16, first
of all, he makes five requests. He said, for this cause, I bow
my knee to God, to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. that
he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to
be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man.
That's the first request. Now, brethren, I love the doctrines,
and I want to speak kindly and personally to every one of you
and to myself. I love the doctrines of grace.
Ronnie and I were talking before we came into the service tonight.
It's all of grace and not of work. If we put in the salvation
of our souls just an atom of works, it spoils the message. It's all of grace. God chose
us and Christ died for us and the Holy Spirit calls us and
Christ is our wisdom and our righteousness, our sanctification
and redemption. He's the Alpha and Omega. He's
the author and finisher of our faith. He's everything. We're
nothing. And when we've done everything
God commands us to do, everything that God Almighty tells us to
do, we're still unprofitable servants. We haven't done anything.
We have no reason to glory in any way in this flesh for anything
that we give or anything that we do or anything that we accomplish
or anything that we know. It's all of grace. And I love
this kind of preaching. I love preaching that makes me
think. I love preaching that makes me give God the glory,
all of the glory. I love preaching that takes me
into biblical and church history. This has a definite place. But
my greatest personal need, and your greatest personal need,
after we have learned Christ, and that is His grace, His sovereignty,
after we have learned Christ, that we might not only grow in
the knowledge of Christ, but in the grace of Christ. That
we might begin in the inner man, in the spiritual man, in the
soul, to reveal the presence of Christ. As one man used to
say, not just an operation of grace, but grace operative in
the life. Now I'll show you an example
of that. Turn to Luke 17. This is what Paul is praying for these
people, that they might be strengthened in the inner man. That they might be strengthened
in the inner man. Now watch this Luke 17. Then
said he unto the disciples, it is impossible but that offenses
will come. Troubles, trials, they're going
to come. but warn to him through whom they come. It's better for
him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he cast into
the sea than that he should offend one of these little ones. Now
verse three, take heed to yourself. If your brother trespass against
you, rebuke him. If he repent, forgive him. If
he trespassed against you seven times in a day and seven times
in a day turned to thee and saying, I repent, thou shalt forgive
him. And the Apostle said, Lord, increase our faith. Lord, increase our faith. My faith needs to be increased,
not just to accept what God says is true. That's really not my
problem. but to put in practice what God
says. You see what I'm saying? When we think of, Lord, increase
my faith so that I can believe there's a heaven and believe
there's a hell and believe the Bible is God's Word, verbally
inspired, and believe Christ died on the cross, was buried,
and rose again, that's not my problem. And that's not why the
disciples made this request. The Lord Jesus said to them,
if offenses are going to come, They're going to come. There's
going to be trials out there, severe trials. And this is one
thing that has disappointed me more than anything in all the
world. The inability of doctrinalists to show the Spirit of Christ
in the time of trial. That bothers me. It bothers me
to hear a man preach the sovereignty of God and then act like he doesn't
believe. It bothers me for people to talk about God's purpose and
God's sovereignty and everything's in the hands of the Lord, and
trials and all these things must come, and then when they get
into that kind of situation, fall to pieces. I don't understand
that. Do you? Now, so it's not just faith that
I need to believe the report and the record. As one preacher
said, it's not faith to move mountains that I need. It's daily faith, personal faith,
living faith that I need. Faith to remove the mountains
of my own bigotry and prejudice and envy and jealousy and these
things. It's not faith to destroy the
walls of Jericho that I need, that's not what I need, or even
to believe the walls of Jericho were destroyed. But it's faith
and strength in the inner man to work on those things that
are dishonoring to Christ in my own personal life. Attitude.
It's not faith to stop the mouth of lions, but faith to stop my
mouth. It's not faith to build cathedrals,
but to build a witness, a living witness in my own conduct and
conversation and attitude for the glory of Jesus Christ. That's
what he's praying about here, that you may be strengthened
in the inner man. You might be filled with humility
and patience and godliness and peace and joy and these things. Paul said, for this cause, not
only that God reached down and lifted you out of the pit of
sin, quickened you. I do thank God for that, he said.
I bow my knee to God that he was pleased to reach down and
save you and me and call us out of the pits of sin. Thank God
for it. And you who were not Jews, you
were not Part of Israel, you were strangers, foreigners, without
God, without hope, but he called you and made us all one in Christ.
I thank God for that," he said. But I bow my knee and I pray
that you might be strengthened in the inner man, that you might
grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, that
you might be given his strength of Christian character. And then
what's the second one? He says, my second request is
this, that you may be strengthened in the inner man and that Christ
may dwell in your hearts by faith. That Christ may dwell in your,
that he may, what's that word? Dwell. Not an occasional visitor. Not a casual, casual visitor. But a constant, constant, living,
personal Lord in your heart. in your heart, he said, in the
best room in the house, not merely in your mind, but in your heart,
that he may dwell in your heart, in your affections. There's a
preacher walking by the seashore one day, and he wanted to illustrate
this, Christ in you and you in Christ, to someone he was talking
to, they were walking along the seashore, and he said it's difficult
to illustrate Christ in me and me in Christ, Christ in me and
me in him. But he came upon a bottle, an
empty bottle laying in the sand, he picked it up. And he went
over and he put it down into the water and just filled it
up, just kept it down there until it bubbled and finally it filled
completely up. And then he took something and
he put a stopper in it. And he threw it out into the
sea. And he said, there you have it, the sea's in the bottle and
the bottle's in the sea. And he said, that's what it means
for you to be in Christ and for Christ to be in you. Charles
Spurgeon said, a good scholar is a man that keeps his subject
constantly before him and in him. He said, the astronomer
keeps his eyes on the stars. The physician constantly studies
the nerves and the bones and the blood and the body system. The farmer studies and lives
with the soil and the vegetables. And the man who would be like
Christ must constantly feed on Christ. Constantly feed on Christ. Not
only learning about Christ with the mind, but Christ dwelling
with him and in him in his heart. that Christ may dwell in your
heart. Now the third request. I pray that you may be strengthened
with all might by His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ
may dwell in your heart by faith, and that you, being rooted and
grounded in love. Two expressions here. Rooted
and grounded. What does rooted mean? Like a
tree which sends its roots deep and twists itself around the
rocks and cannot be moved by whatever wind or trowel, but
your love is rooted in Christ Jesus and grounded like a building
laid on a rock foundation, settled and sure that will not crack
whatever force is brought to bear upon it. Our Lord said that
house that's built on the rock in Matthew 7, 25, the rains descended,
trials from heaven, the floods came, trials from the earth,
the winds blew, sources of trial that are unseen, and it fell
not, that you may be rooted and grounded in this love of Christ
and for Christ. Turn to 1 Corinthians chapter
13. Now here's another chapter division that causes a little
bit of difficulty. In chapter 12 of 1 Corinthians,
Paul is talking about the gifts of the Spirit. He says in chapter
12 there in verse 29, are all apostles, 1 Corinthians 12, are
all apostles Are all prophets, are all teachers, are all workers
of miracles, do all have the gift of healing, do all speak
with tongue, do all interpret? Covet earnestly the best gifts.
In other words, here's what he's saying to the church. God has
given in the church gifts, several, as he will, by his Holy Spirit.
I don't know whether we know much about the gifts of healing
and tongues and interpretations and those things now, but there
are gifts still. But these gifts were present
in the church. And Paul said they're there. Everybody doesn't
have the same gift. But he says in verse 31, now
watch it, covet earnestly the best gift. Nothing wrong with
coveting the best gift, whether it be in your mind prophecy or
interpretation or healing or faith or giving or whatever,
preaching, whatever it might be, covet the best gift. Nothing
wrong with that. For the glory of Christ to serve his purpose,
to edify his people, But, look at the next line. Covet earnestly
the best gift, yet show I you, unto you, a more excellent way. Now there's a division. It just
stops right in the middle of that sentence. I show you a more
excellent way. Verse 1, chapter 13. Though I speak with the tongues
of men and of angels, and have not love, I become as a sounding
brass and a tinkling cymbal. You want to speak with tongues?
Well, you could be able to speak with the tongues of men and of
angels, but if you didn't have love, well, you're nothing but
a tinkling cymbal and a sounding gong. See what I say? And though
I have the gift of prophecy, oh, how we'd like to have the
gift of prophecy, to speak a word of prophecy, have a revelation
from God that nobody else knows what's going to happen in the
future. And I understand these mysteries, and I have knowledge
and faith so I could remove mountains and have not love. I'm nothing. You're with me now? You see that
David? Paul says he's talking about
these gifts. I know he said they're there. They're in the church.
I speak with tongues more than you all. Peter had the gift of
healing. Another had this gift. But he
said I'll show you a better way. I'll show you something far better
than the gift of tongues and the gift of healing, the gift
of faith and the gift of prophecy and the gift of interpretation.
I'll show you something far better than that. You might speak with
the tongues of men and angels and don't have love, you're nothing,
but a sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal. You may be able to fathom
the depths of doctrine and prophecy and all of these so-called deeper
and higher truths and have not love, you're nothing. And look
at verse 3, and though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor
and get my body to be burned, we, some of us, envy the martyrs. who had the glorious privilege
of marching to the stake for the glory of Jesus Christ, or
putting their head in the guillotine for the glory of Christ, and
being transported by the angels of God into the presence of Christ
with the blood of suffering dripping from their heads. But you can
do that and have not love, it profiteth me nothing. What is this love? That's what
he's praying over here. I pray you might be strengthened
in the inner man. I pray that Christ may dwell
in your heart. I pray you may be rooted and grounded in love.
What is this love? Well, it's a love that suffers
long. It's a love that's kind. It's
a love that doesn't envy other people. It's a love that is not
rash or proud. It's not puffed up. It's a love
that does not behave itself unseemly. It's a love that doesn't seek
its own. It's a love that's not irritable and easily provoked,
and it's a love that doesn't think evil. It's a love that
doesn't rejoice in iniquity. It couldn't be a gossip because
it wouldn't rejoice in iniquity, but it's a love that rejoices
in the truth, and it's a love that beareth all things and believeth
all things and hopeth all things and endureth all things, and
it's a love that'll never fail. or prophecies, they shall fail,
and tongues, they shall cease, and knowledge, it'll vanish away,
we just know in part anyway, and prophesy in part, and one
day that which is perfect is coming, and that which is in
part shall be done away." And he went on down to verse 13,
"...now about is faith, hope, and love, these three, but the
greatest of these is love." Now watch this chapter division.
Verse 1 of chapter 14 is, "...follow after love." Continuation the
same thought and if you'll check your amplified Bible, I want
you to listen to the amplified Bible here now on that same reading
He says he talks about love it it endures long. It's patient
It's kind of this love that in which I pray you might be rooted
and grounded. You might find something out
about it that endures long is not conceited is not arrogant
is not proud and bears up unto anything and everything, is always
ready to believe the best of every person instead of the worst.
He said, now abideth faith, hope, and love, these three. But the
greatest of these is love. Now watch the next verse, chapter
14, in this amplified. Listen. Eagerly pursue and seek
to acquire this love. And Moffat says, make love your
aim. Make it your great quest. Make it your great quest. All right, the fourth part of
this prayer now, verse, chapter 13, verse 18, that you may be
able to comprehend, now this is important here, that you may
be able to comprehend with all the saints, with all believers,
what is the breath and the length and the depth and the height,
and to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge." In
other words, he's saying here, and a little help from Mr. Spurgeon,
he's praying that these people might be able to comprehend the
love of Christ for them. The breath of it, it extends
to all ranks, races, regions, not just to the Jew, but to the
Gentile. That's the breath of it. That's the breath of it.
It reaches to every tribe, kindred, nation, and tongue under heaven.
For God the Father hath given him a people from all nations.
I'm saying this, and I want to say it as kindly as I can, There's
no way that a person can know the love of Christ and have prejudice
and bigotry against any people, color, region. That's not of God. That's just
not of God. And when we find that cropping
up in our hearts, that prejudice and bigotry, It's just not the
love of Christ, because our Lord has a people of all nations and
all tribes. That's the breadth of it. All
right, that you may know the length of it. Our Lord said,
I've loved you with an everlasting love. Now, if he'd have thought
on me for ten minutes, that'd have been a blessing, wouldn't
it? If he'd have thought on me for ten minutes, it'd have been
a wonderful condescension, but he said the length of his love
is from everlasting to everlasting, the same. He thinks on me all
the time. And then the depths of it, that
you may comprehend the depths of His love all the way to the
cross. all the way to the cross. Having loved His own, He loved
them even to the deepest, bitterest agony of Calvary, and even the
deepest portions of hell, and even to bearing the wrath of
His Father. That's the depths of it. Oh,
the breadth and the lengths and the depths of the love of the
Son of God for me and you. And then that you may be able
to comprehend the heights of His love. Now, we'll have to
wait till we get to glory to find out anything about that.
to even to come in on the height of his love. I'm going to have
to get up there and personally see it. The height, the glory
of his love, that's reserved for a future day. Now I see through
a glass dimly, but then face to face I'll know as I have been
known. But this prayer, now watch this,
that you might be able to comprehend the love of Christ, If we ever
are able to comprehend the love of Christ, a preacher won't ever
have to try to motivate you any other way. Now this is so. Paul, we were talking about this
a moment ago, the Apostle Paul always used the love of Christ
for you to motivate the people of God. You'll have noticed that
turn sometimes through his writing. And he says this, the love of
Christ constrains me, or motivates me, or drives me. It's my driving
force. It's the love of God for me.
In 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, when he talks about giving, when he
encourages the people to give, that you may abound, he said
you've abounded in the grace of faith and the grace of preaching
and all these other things. See that you abound in giving?
Do you know the illustration he uses to encourage people to
give? He says, for you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that how though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became
poor, that you through his poverty might be rich. That's how he
motivates them. He says, now you give as God gave. The love
of Christ for us. And then when he talks about
husbands loving their wives, what does he use? Husbands, love
your wives as Christ loved the church. And then when he talks
about loving one another, 1 John, when John talks about this, he
says, love one another as I have loved you. And then when he talks
about preaching the gospel, he says we're ambassadors of Christ
in 2 Corinthians 5, 17-21. We're ambassadors for Christ.
As though God did beseech you and Christ did. Be ye reconciled
to God. For he who knew no sin was made
sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God
in him." If we ministers, and the Holy Spirit has to make it
real, but if we ministers would just talk about, instead of talking
about what people ought to do for God, if we could somehow
with the aid and influence and power of the Holy Spirit get
people to see what Christ has done for them, that's all the
motivation they'll need. That's all the motivation. Now
last of all, in closing, let's wind it up. Verse 19, to know
the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that you might be
filled with all the fullness of God. What does this mean?
That you might have, here's what it means, that you might have
the richest measure of the presence of God in you, in me. The presence of God. As I said
this morning in the message, I know something about His sovereignty.
I know something about His power. I can talk intelligently about
that. I can quote Scripture about God creating the world by the
wisdom and power that only He possesses. I know something about
that. And I know something about His grace and mercy. I know I've
seen that in the Scripture. He will be merciful to whom He
will be merciful and gracious to whom He will be gracious.
I understand something of the righteousness of God revealed
in Christ, how He suffered that God might be just and justify
the ungodly. I understand some things about
that. I know something about His divine call, the call of
His Holy Spirit, how that He called out this man to faith
in Christ. How did he brought this man to
repentance and to love Christ? Only God can do that. I know something about that divine
call. But what Paul is praying here
for us, and what I pray for myself, and what I pray for you, is that
we might be filled personally, personally with the fullness
of God. Personally, oh listen to this.
Oh could I find from day to day the presence of my Lord Then
would my hours glide sweetly away while leaning on his love
Lord I desire with thee to live Always from day to day In a union that the world cannot
give nor ever take away Oh, for heart to praise my God, a heart
from bondage set free, a heart that will all others love, as
Christ the Lord loved me. That means something. I believe this is the twofold
message that needs to be declared in this day. I bow my knee to
God. I thank him for his sovereign
grace. I thank him for his redeeming mercy. I thank him for visiting
us when he didn't have to. No reason for him to love the
unloved. He lifted us and made us his
own. But then I bow my knee to God
and I pray that I might be and you might be strengthened in
the inner man. That Christ may dwell in our
hearts, dwell, not visit on Sunday or once a week or from time to
time, but dwell in our hearts by faith. that we might be rooted
and grounded in his love, motivated by his love, that we might comprehend
something of the breadth and the length and the depth and
the height of his love for us, and that this blessed fullness
of God, fullness of God, might be ours, the presence of the
living God. Our Father, we pray that you
would anoint this message with the power of thy Holy Spirit.
Make it effectual for thy glory and for the good of these who
have heard it. We pray we have heard it. And
we join with our servant Paul. For this reason we bow our knees
and we thank Thee, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for
Thy eternal covenant mercies, for the sacrifice of Thy beloved
Son. But for this cause we bow our
knees and we pray that we may be strengthened in the inner
man, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith. that we
might be rooted and grounded in love, that we may comprehend
something of the love of Christ for us, and that we might be
filled with the fullness of God. Thou hast promised, O Lord, that
you would come and take up your abode in us, dwelling in us,
I in them and Thou in me. Now bless us according to thy

About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
