Now let's turn back in our Bibles
to the book of Acts, chapter 24. The Apostle Paul had been
taken into custody by religious leaders who would have killed
him, but being and pleading a Roman citizen, he was brought before
Felix, the Roman governor, to be tried, to be heard. Ananias,
the high priest and the elders of Israel brought all manner
of charges against Paul. They accused him of being a troublemaker. They said he was a pest. They accused him of being an
agitator. They accused him of stirring
up people against the government and against authority, religious
authority and civil authority. They called him a ringleader
of the sect of the Nazarene. They were called this because
they were followers of Jesus of Nazareth. Our Lord was called
a Nazarene. Remember one of the disciples,
when he heard that Christ came from Nazareth, said, Can any
good come out of Nazareth? The sign on the cross said, Jesus
of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. When he appeared to the
Apostle Paul, he said, I'm Jesus of Nazareth. They called his
followers Nazarenes. And then they accused him of
desecrating and defiling the temple. Well, Paul was permitted to speak
for himself. Felix beckoned to him to, let's
hear what you've got to say about this. And Paul made this statement. He said, less than two weeks
ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. And these men did not
find me in the temple, nor in the synagogue, nor in the city,
debating and disputing with anybody. He said they did not find me
stirring up anyone against authority, against the government. I'm not
guilty of sedition. And he said they cannot present
one kind of evidence, any kind of evidence to prove what they
say about me and against me. However, however, and here's
our text, this I confess to you, that after the way which they
call heresy, So worship I, the God of my fathers, believing all things which are
written in the law and in the prophets." Now, we've got a comparable
situation today. We haven't endured the persecution
which Paul endured. We haven't been committed to
prison, as Paul was. We haven't been brought before
the governor. But the same situation is true today. I can say, and
you can say, the true minister of God and the people of God
are not debaters and they're not disputers. They're witnesses. They're preachers of God's grace.
You won't find a true minister of God going up and down the
country debating and disputing with anybody. Ours is not to
be God's private secretary and defend what God says is to present
what God says. And the true minister of Christ
respects authority. He respects government. He's
a man of peace. You won't find a true minister
of God leading any kind of demonstration. You won't find a true minister
of God out on the streets breaking anybody's laws. Ministers of God are ministers
of the gospel. They are men of peace and kindness,
and they seek not to agitate people nor to stir up feelings
or wrath against anyone. And while these accusations,
Paul said, are not true, I will confess unto you, Felix, one
thing, that after the way that these men call heresy, I confess
That's the way I worship the God of my fathers. The religion
which they call heresy is my faith. To them it's heresy, to me it's
the truth of God. Now, heresy is a fearful word. It's a fearful word. When you
look at that word heresy, there are people who have been burned
at the stake for heresy. There are people who have been
committed to prison for heresy. Heresy is denying the Word of
God. And Paul says, I confess to you
that the way that these religious leaders call heresy, what they
call heresy, apostasy, that's the way I worship God. Now I'm going to give you six
things that the world calls heresy in this generation, right now,
1976. the day in which we live. And I can say that that which
the religious world calls heresy, that's the way I worship God
Almighty. Now the first one is this. Man's
complete fall in the Garden of Eden, and man's complete ruin
through the original sin, and man's total depravity as a result
of Adam's transgression is called by the religious world, Baptist,
Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, and all the rest of them, it's
called heresy. Everyone in religious circles
calls original sin heresy. But that's the way I believe
that man became a sinner. And that's what I believe happened
in the Garden of Eden. Now everybody knows something
happened in the Garden of Eden, but let's ask the question tonight,
what happened? Turn with me to Romans chapter
5. I can give you a very brief four-point outline on what happened
in the Garden of Eden. First of all, in Romans 5, verse
12, now they will cause this heresy. When you preach that
man is totally depraved from the sole of his feet to the top
of his head, That there's no life in him, there's no truth
in him, there's no godliness in him, there's no communication
with God, there's no knowledge of God, there's no love for God,
that he's totally corrupted, his affections, his imagination,
his will, everything. The world calls that heresy.
But that's what we believe. In Romans 5, 12, listen to it.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, Now brethren,
by one man sin entered, that is, it came into this world. Sin came into this world through
Adam and through Adam's transgression, and sin came into all of the
inhabitants of this world. Not by imitation only. Yeah,
we're imitators of Adam's transgression, but we are identified with Adam's
transgression not only by imitation, but by imputation and by impartation. Adam's transgression is chargeable
to us as if we ourselves had done it. And Adam's fallen nature
is imparted unto us by natural birth. Now down here in verse
14 it says, Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even
over them that had not sinned after the similitude, that is,
the imitation of Adam's transgression. In other words, little babies
died, they die now. But if little babies are not
sinners, why do they die? Death is the result of sin. And
if little babies don't become sinners until they reach the
age of accountability, then Paul is saying here that none of them
could die until they reach the age of accountability. But we're
not only sinners by imitation. We don't become sinners when
we imitate Adam. We are sinners through imputation
and impartation. We receive Adam's fallen nature. So infants died who never imitated
Adam. But they had received from Adam
a fallen nature, an evil nature. That's what Paul is saying in
Psalms 51. Turn over to Psalms 51 and listen
to it. This is what David is saying.
He says in Psalms 51 5. Now watch it carefully. Behold,
I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Now brethren, here's what the
Bible teaches. The world calls this heresy.
This is what Paul said to Felix. The way they call heresy is the
way I worship God. And I'm saying what the, and
I don't want to shock you, but what the nominal religious world
today calls heresy, that's what I believe. that when Adam fell
in the Garden of Eden, he was the federal head, he was the
representative of the whole human race. And the whole human race
was in his loins. God created M-A-N, man, called
A-D-A-M, Adam, which is the Hebrew word, man. He never created another
man. All the rest of them came from
Adam. Even Eve came out of Adam. But all the rest of us came from
Adam. And when Adam stood, we stood. When he fell, we fell.
When he sinned, we sinned. When he died, we died. When he
became separated from God, we became separated from God. When
darkness reigned in his soul, darkness reigned in our soul.
And we received his nature by impartation. We received his
guilt by imputation. He stood for us. Look at Psalm
58. Psalms 58 verse 3. The wicked
are estranged from the womb. They go astray as soon as they're
born. Speaking lies. You don't have
to teach children to hate. They're born knowing how to hate.
Because they're born with a hateful nature. You don't have to teach
children to covet. You don't have to teach children
to lust. You don't have to teach children to lie. They're all
born with that in them. That's the nature. Just like
a wolf is born with a nature to eat meat and a sheep is born
with a nature to eat grass. We're born with a nature to rebel.
And we got it from Adam. That's what happened in the garden.
Turn back to Romans 5. I've got to move along because
I've got some other things to say. Look at verse 17. By one
man's sin entered this world, and I look at verse 17, by one
man's offense, death, d-e-a-t-h, death reigned. We're not talking
here only of physical death, this no one can deny. You never
get an argument about the fact everybody dies. Charlie's stepfather,
67 years of age, got up Monday morning, went to work, out on
the street taking care of his business, and he died. And tomorrow,
somebody else is going to die. And tomorrow, somebody else will
die. And next week, somebody else will die. And after a while,
you'll die. There was no death till Adam fell. The death of
the trees, the death of the flowers, the death of the fruit trees,
the death of man, the death of animals, these things came as
a result of sin. But there's another kind of death
that reigns, and that is spiritual death, moral death. Now let's
look at some Scripture. Let me just read it to you quickly.
I can turn faster. Ephesians 2 verse 1 says this,
And you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins,
wherein in times past you walked according to the course of this
world. When did that start? It started with Adam, dead in
trespasses and sins. Listen to this over here in the
book of Isaiah chapter 1. Isaiah chapter 1 verse 5 and
6, God says, Why should you be stricken? Why should you be stricken? You'll only revolt more and more.
Your whole head is sick. The head is the mentality. The
whole heart is faint. That's the affections. From the
sole of your foot to the top of your head, there's no soundness
in you. Nothing but wounds and bruises
and putrefying sores. God says He looked down on the
children of men, and He said every imagination of their heart
is evil. In Romans chapter 3, listen to
this, Romans chapter 3 verse 9, What then, are we better than
they? In no wise, we both, we, before Pooh, both Jew and Gentile,
they're all under sin. As it is written, there's none
righteous, no not one. Now listen to me, I know we've
got a, what we call a pattern of righteousness to which we
try to come, we try to come up to, but we're talking about God's
standard of righteousness here. There's none righteous in God's
sight. No, not one. There's none that
understandeth. There's none that seeketh after
God. They're all gone out of the way. They're all together
become unprofitable. There's none that doeth good.
No, not one. Our fallen nature loves darkness
and it hates light, it loves sin and hates holiness, it loves
evil, it hates God. The natural mind is enmity against
God. It is not subject to the law
of God, neither indeed can it be. That's what happened in the
garden. Turn to Romans 5 again. Alright, sin entered this world.
Death entered this world. Physical death, spiritual death. When a man dies physically, he's
lying in a coffin, and the soul's gone. You can speak to him, you
can curse him, you can praise him, you can poke him, you can
burn him, you can do anything, and he's dead. He has no response. And when Adam fell in the Garden
of Eden, man died spiritually and he has no communication,
no response, no knowledge of and no love for God. That's so. And Romans 5, 18, Therefore,
as by the offense of one, judgment came upon all men, to condemnation. What's he saying here? He's saying
that the whole world is guilty And Almighty God says the wages
of sin is death, so all guilty sinners are under just condemnation
of heaven. The wrath of God is revealed
against all ungodliness. God's angry with the wicked.
God hateth the workers of iniquity. That's what it says. We are under
the wrath of God. These little silly bumper stickers
that says, God loves you, smile, God loves you. There's a fellow
on the radio before me every Tuesday and Thursday that says,
remember, Jesus loves you. Well, now let me tell you something. God is love. But one of the attributes
of God is righteousness and judgment and justice. And this whole world
is under just condemnation. That's what it says here. Judgment
came upon all men, to what? Condemnation, because of Adam's
sin. And he that believeth not the
Son, to what? The wrath of God abideth on him. Now there is love, the love of
God, but it's in Christ, it's in faith, it's not in rebellion. And then Romans 5, 19, now listen
to this. For by one man's disobedience
many were made sinners. What happened in the garden?
Now I know they call that heresy. They say that in every person
born into this world is a spark of good. The Bible teaches there's
none good. They say that a child doesn't
become a sinner till it reaches the age of accountability. Strange
to me that a child should die then. Why does death have any
effect upon a perfect person, a holy person, one without sin?
And David said we're shapen in iniquity, we're brought forth
speaking lies, we're conceived in iniquity, we're born in sin. Well, they call it heresy. Paul
says that's the way I worship God. I know what happened in
the garden. All right, secondly, God's covenant
of grace in Christ Jesus. Now, you get a good grip on the
pew out there, but I'm going to make some statements here.
I want you to listen to them. I know that the doctrine of divine
election is called heresy by the religious world. But my friends,
without apology, I believe and I worship the God of election. In Ephesians chapter 1, verse
3, let's turn over there and read some scripture. Ephesians
1, 3. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings and heavenly
praises in Christ, according as he hath chosen us in Christ
before the foundation of the world, that we should behold
without blame before him in love having predestinated us unto
the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself according to
the good pleasure of his will. Our Lord said to his disciples,
you didn't choose me, I chose you. Our Lord said in John 17
verse 2, thou hast given me authority over all flesh that I should
give eternal life to as many as thou hast given me. I pray
not for this world, I pray for those whom thou hast given me.
Father, I come to thee, keep through thine own name those
whom thou hast given me. In John chapter 6, turn over
there with me a moment, John the 6th chapter, verse 37, our
Lord said, All that my Father giveth me shall come to me. Him that cometh to me I'll in
no wise cast out, for I came down from heaven, not to do mine
own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the
Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath
given me I'll lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the
last day." When Paul preached in Acts 13, verse 48, it says,
"...and as many as were ordained to life believed." people you work with, preachers
you hear on the radio, pastors of most of the churches in this
town, they call that heresy. But that's the way I worship
God. Turn to 2 Thessalonians 2.13,
that's what Paul said to Philae. After the way that they call
heresy and spit out as evil, That's why I worship the God
of my fathers, because I believe the whole Word of God, he said.
I believe the Word of God. 2 Thessalonians 2, 13. But we're
bound to give thanks. Election is a doctrine of praise.
Always to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord. Election
is a doctrine of love. Because God hath from the beginning,
election is an eternal doctrine, chosen you to salvation. It's
a doctrine of salvation, redemption. Through sanctification of the
Spirit, it's a doctrine of holiness. And belief of the truth, it's
a doctrine of means. Our Lord taught that. Turn to
John 10. Listen to this carefully. John 10, verse 16. Our Lord Jesus said in John 10,
verse 15, As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father,
and I lay down my life for the sheep, and other sheep I have. which are not of this foe, them
also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice." They're not going
to be saved without hearing the Word. They're not going to be
saved without believing the Word. They're not going to be saved
without coming to Christ. Our Lord says, I have them, but
they in time are going to hear my Word, and they're going to
believe it, and they're going to come to me, and we're going
to be one foe and one shepherd. Paul said, I'm not guilty of
leading marches. I'm not guilty of leading demonstrations. I'm not guilty of stirring up
people against the government. I'm not guilty. I'm not guilty
of debating and disputing. I'm not guilty of desecrating
the temple. No, sir. But he said, I'm guilty
of this. After the manner that they call
heresy, I worship God. All right, number three. This
is heresy today. Original sins heresy. You ask
somebody. You jot these down and take it
to somebody and ask them what they believe. Anybody, doesn't
matter to me. Take it to the leading pastor that you know
and ask him if he believes that man, as a result of Adam's fall,
is totally, completely without God, without hope, without Christ,
without help, without mercy, without life, dead in sin. And it takes a supernatural regenerating
miracle of God's power to give him life. So that he'll even
hear God's Word, so he'll even see the mystery of godliness,
so he'll even understand. The preaching of the cross is
to them who are perishing foolishness. The natural man will not understand,
he will not receive the things of God. They're foolishness to
him. You know what Scripture said? But God has a people. I don't know who they are. I
just know they are. God, in Christ, before the world
began, according to the good pleasure of his own will, says,
I'm going to have a people like my son. And he knows who they
are. Christ knew from the beginning
who would believe on him and who would betray him. You know
what Scripture says? Christ said, I know my sheep
and am known of mine. I know who they are. Why, they
said to him, they said, you be the Christ, tell us plainly.
He said, I told you, you believe not, because you're not of my
sheep. My sheep, hear my voice. He has
a sheep. And then the third thing, here
it is, Christ effects your death for believers. Now, I didn't start preaching
yesterday, and I don't preach like I started preaching yesterday.
you say on television Sunday, he's preaching the same thing
he preached 16 years ago. Well, I can't say that. I believe
I've learned something. I believe I've grown a little
bit. And I'm going to say something here that will help you now.
Now listen carefully to it. Any time that you speak of what
we call particular redemption, now you know what that means.
Or if we use the terms that the old writers used, and I don't
like it. I don't like this term at all.
I think it conveys a wrong notion. But the term limited atonement. Now brother, if you mention particular
redemption, or what the old writers called limited atonement, and
people understand what you're saying, you've got a fight on
your hands. You can prepare to do battle.
Because the whole religious world hates this teaching. They despise
it. They call it heresy. It's definitely
heresy. And even some who will accept
depravity and who will accept what we call election will not
accept this. And I can help you with it if
you listen to me. Let's understand what we're saying. First of all,
there is a sense in which all men benefit from the coming of
Jesus Christ into this world and the death of Christ on the
cross. There's a sense in which every human being has benefited
and been blessed by the death of our Lord. Just as when it
rains out there in Boyd County, believing farmers are blessed
and unbelieving farmers are blessed. The rain sent by God and the
sunshine sent by God, there's a sense in which if God directs
it to accomplish his purpose for his people, even those next
door to him are blessed by it. That's what Christ said of the
believers. He said, you are the salt of the earth. The earth
is blessed by your presence. God can't bless this church without
blessing Ashland. God can't send a minister of
the gospel to you without your neighbors being benefited by
it. And I'll tell you this, secondly, and I always remember this, there's
a sense in which every son of Adam benefits from the death
of Christ. Barnard used to say, anything
that's out of hell, mercy. And secondly, if Christ had only
saved one sinner, His work would have been the same. If there
hadn't been but one sinner saved, our Lord would have had to assume
human nature, he would have had to come into this world, he would
have had to face the law and obey it, he would have had to
go to the cross, he'd have to die just like he died, he'd have
to have been buried and rise again and go to glory and intercede. If he saves every sinner in the
world, his work would be the same. That's so. He would have had to live, obey,
die, rise from the tomb and intercede. It's not how much blood he shed,
it's whose blood was shed. There's no limit to the power
of Christ's death. There's no limit to the ability
of Christ's death. There's a limit to the application
of Christ's death for this reason. Now watch this third thing. Always
remember it. that though we're cleansed, we
are redeemed, we are justified by the death of Christ. The cross
itself, now listen to this, this is important, the cross itself
and the death of Christ itself, though all important, is only
a part of his redemptive work. Now if there's no resurrection,
the cross is in vain. Right? If there's no intercession,
the cross is in vain. If there's no covenant of grace,
the cross is in vain. You can't just reach down and
take one aspect of his active obedience, or one aspect of his
passive obedience, and say, this is salvation. No, sir. Back yonder
before the foundation of the world, he was our surety. And
we were chosen in him, and without that aspect of it, I wouldn't
be alive now, and neither would you, because our fathers, fathers,
fathers, fathers would have been consumed by God's wrath. Old
Abraham wouldn't have lived one day if it hadn't been for Christ
standing for him. And then he came into this world
in the flesh. We are saved by his life, not
just by his death, by his life. He met the law, honored it, exalted
it, obeyed it. He became our sacrifice, our
sin offering, our atonement. And then he rose for us and he
became, continued to be our high priest, our righteousness, our
mediator. And he's not through yet, he's
coming back. And unto them that look for him
shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation."
Now, for whom did he stand as a surety? You say, well, he stood
for the people who were chosen in him. That's right. For whom was he the high priest?
Did the high priest of Israel, when he went under the Did he
represent the Philistines and the Amorites and the Amalekites
and the Medes and the Persians? He represented Israel. He had
the twelve tribes written right here on his hand and on his breastplate. And I'll tell you, when our high
priest goes into the presence of the Father, he represents
the same people for whom he stood as a charity. And when he went
to that cross on Calvary, he bore our sins in his body. And his work is in perfect harmony
and perfect accord. Whom he foreknew, he predestinated. Whom he predestinated, he called.
Whom he called, he justified. Whom he justified, he glorified.
And you can't reach in here and take an aspect out of it, an
area out of it, a part out of it, say this was for some, this
was for others, this was for everybody, that was for nobody,
it's all in perfect accord, the work of Christ. So when we, I
don't like limited atonement for that reason. It's not just
the atonement we're talking about, it's particular redemption. Offer
and finisher, alpha and omega, beginning and end. It's the redemption
that we have in Christ Jesus, and that's for every believer. And all you have to do to have
a part in it is become a believer. That's right. But he that believeth
not on the Son, the wrath of God abideth on him. I'm not limiting
his sufficiency or his power or his ability. I'm simply saying
that he stood for somebody. And he always did. And he does
now, and he always will. All right, here's another heresy.
And it's the way we worship God. It's the God in whom we trust
and in whom we believe. And that is the effectual call
of the Holy Spirit. Now, my friends, Now, don't be
afraid to make this statement. There is a call of God heard by all men. There is a call of God that not
only may be rejected, but it is rejected. He says in Proverbs,
listen, I have called, Proverbs 124, and you refused. I stretched
out my hand. and no man regarded. You said
it not my word, my counsel. You wouldn't listen to my warnings.
Therefore I laugh at your calamity or mock when your fear cometh."
How does God call men? He calls men by creation. Romans
1, 18, listen to this. This is talking about all men.
Romans 1, verse 18. It says here that The wrath of
God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness
of men who hold the truth in unrighteousness, verse 19, because
that which may be known of God is manifest in them. God has
shown it to them. For the invisible things of him
from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood
by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead,
so men are without excuse. God reveals himself by nature. He reveals himself by the things
that are made. How does God call men? By conscience.
Look at Romans chapter 2, verse 14. When the Gentiles, which
have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law,
these having not the law are law unto themselves, which show
what? The work of God written in their hearts. their conscience
also bearing witness, their thoughts, meanwhile, accusing or else excusing
one another. How does God call men? By providence.
He said to Israel, he said, I've sent famine, I've sent pestilence,
I've sent mildew, but you haven't returned. I've slain your young
men with a sword, but you haven't returned. I've sent a drought
when there was just two or three months to the harvest, but you
haven't returned to me, therefore prepare to meet God. How does
God call men? By the preached word. Go ye into
all the world, he said to his disciples, and preach the gospel
to every creature. But there is an effectual call,
there is a divine call, there is a supernatural call, there
is a special call, there is an irresistible call, which God
gives to his people. I'll show it to you. First of
all, go to Romans 8. I quoted this a moment ago, Romans
chapter 8. It says, verse 30, "...moreover,
whom he predestinated, he called, and whom he called, them he justified,
whom he justified, them he glorified." Now turn, if you will, to Galatians
1.15. Galatians 1.15, Paul says this,
Galatians 1.15, "...when it pleased God, who separated me from my
mother's womb, and called me." and call me by his grace. Turn to 1 Thessalonians 1, 1
Thessalonians chapter 1, verse 4 and 5. Listen to this. Knowing,
brethren beloved, your election of God. Now carefully note this
verse. I know your election of God.
How do you know it, Paul? Listen. For our gospel did not
come to you in word only. But it came to you in power in
the Holy Ghost in much assurance." There were two thieves crucified
with our Lord. One of them heard nothing, one
of them heard something. And then 2 Thessalonians 2, 13
and 14. Now look at this. I read verse
13. Now look at verse 14. by our gospel to the obtaining
of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now one other scripture,
John chapter 10. Now the world sees no difference
in the way that God calls all men and the way God calls some
men, but our Lord points out the difference right here. Now
if you'll read this carefully, and ask God the Holy Spirit to
be your teacher, you'll see the difference. In John 10, 24, then
came the Jews round about him and said to him, How long dost
thou make us to doubt? They were in doubt. Are you the
Christ? Tell us plainly. He answered
and said, I told you. I told you. You heard some words,
and you didn't believe them. The works that I do in my Father's
name, you saw some miracles. They bore witness, but you believe
not, because you are not of my sheep. As I said unto you, my
sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." There
it is. There's your two calls. They
all heard words. They all saw miracles. But here
one, there one, and there one that heard his word, and they
saw his glory, and was revealed to them the mysteries of God.
Now quickly, here's the fifth thing. Heresy. I preached this on television
a couple of times, and boy, I got some real good mail from this. I found out folks don't like
this. This is heresy. The perseverance of the saints.
Those whom God hath purposed to save, and those for whom Christ
is the surety and the mediator. will in time hear God's voice
through his word, they will come to Christ and they'll keep on
coming. They will repent of sin and they'll keep on repenting.
They'll believe on Christ and they'll keep on believing. And
they'll grow in grace and they'll keep on growing. And they'll never perish. Let
me show you a couple of verses. Don't be too impatient with me,
but turn to Psalms 37. Now, the world calls that heresy,
but like Paul said, that's the way we worship God. Psalms 37,
24, listen. Verse 23 says, "...the steps
of a good man are ordered by the Lord. He delighteth in his
way. Though he fall, he shall not
be utterly cast down." For the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.
Look at verse 28. The Lord loveth judgment, he
forsaketh not his saints. They are preserved forever. His
saints are preserved forever. Turn to Jeremiah 32. Listen to this verse, verse 40. Now here's the key. God says,
I'll make an everlasting covenant with them. I will not turn away
from them to do them good. I'll put my fear in their hearts,
and they shall not depart from me." There's both sides. I won't
turn from them, and they won't turn from me. That's preservation
and perseverance. Now, last of all, Paul says,
I confess that the way which they call heresy is the way I
worship God. And that is the absolute sovereignty
of God. What do I believe about the sovereignty
of God? Let me read you some scripture.
I believe what Moses believed when he said this. See now that I, even I am he. There's no God with me. I kill. I make alive. I wound. I heal. Neither is there any that can
deliver out of my hand." What I believe about the sovereignty
of God, I believe right here what Hannah said. The Lord killeth,
the Lord maketh alive, the Lord bringeth down to the grave and
bringeth up, the Lord maketh poor, the Lord maketh rich, the
Lord bringeth low and the Lord lifteth up. What I believe about
the sovereignty of God, I believe right here what Job said. The
Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of
the Lord. What I believe about the sovereignty of God, I believe
what David said right here in Psalm 135. He said, Our God is
in the heavens. He hath done whatsoever he pleased
in the heavens and the earth and in all deep places. What
I believe about the sovereignty of God, I believe what Isaiah
said here in Isaiah 46 verse 9, I am God, there's none else,
I'm God, there's none like me, I declare the end from the beginning
and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying
my counsel shall stand and I'll do all my good pleasure. What
I believe about the sovereignty of God, I believe what Jeremiah
said. When God spoke to him and says, Israel, you're in my hands
like the clays in the hands of the potter, and I'll do with
you what I will. What I believe about the sovereignty
of God, I believe what Nebuchadnezzar said. God's dominion is an everlasting
dominion, and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing,
and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven and
among the inhabitants of the earth, and none can stay his
hand or say unto him, What doest thou? What I believe about the
sovereignty of God, I believe what Paul said in Ephesians chapter
1, verse 11. He worketh all things after the
counsel of his own. No, we're not debaters, we're
not disputers, we're not agitators, we're not blasphemers, we're
not seditionists, we're not desecrators of the temple. But after the
manner that this religious world calls heresy, I confess, Paul
said, that's the way I worship God. Because I believe all the
law and all the prophets. And what I challenge men to do
is to sacrifice, toss away, be done with all of their religious
traditions and preconceived notions and customs and let God speak.
Let Him speak.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
