I am that bread of life. - John 6:48
There could be no clearer Gospel declaration than this singular statement of our Lord. Religious men today love to complicate the truth of God with many words and raise many questions in an effort to cast doubt upon both the living Word of God and the written Word of God. This attitude is no different than the attitude of the unbelieving Jews whom our Lord confronts in this text. The heart of Christ's message is very simple, too simple for the proud intellect of unbelieving man.
The singular, vital truth of his message is there is no spiritual life anywhere, for any man, in any generation, apart from being one with the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no spiritual life in man, or in the doings of man. Man is spiritually dead and will remain dead unless and until God, in sovereign grace and power, reveals Christ to him in vital union. The Lord Jesus Christ is the bread of life, period! Plus nothing and minus nothing!
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever (Jn 6:58).
