Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah. at...: Heb. settled - Psalms 39:5

My brethren, when I preach our guilt, sinfulness, and utter depravity, I am not speaking as man speaks or seeing us as man sees. Compared to the ways of the flesh and in relationship to the general conduct of this world, most of you are to be commended for your conduct and conversation! But, before the holiness, righteousness, and glory of God, who can but feel his total wretchedness and corruption?

We are not to be judged by the opinions of men, but by the perfect Law of God. In his sight man at his best state is altogether vanity. A man will see his sinfulness only to the degree that he sees God's holiness (Isa. 6:1-5).
