How do we know God's mercy is essential for salvation?

Answered in 8 sources

God's mercy is vital for salvation as it is through His mercy that sinners are quickened and made alive in Christ.

The necessity of God's mercy for salvation is rooted in our spiritual condition as sinful humans. Ephesians 2:4-5 states, 'But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ.' This indicates that without God's mercy, we remain in a state of death due to our sins, incapable of attaining righteousness. It is by His mercy alone that we gain the ability to see our need for Christ and trust in His atoning work, fulfilling the law's demands on our behalf.
