How do we know that Jesus is our substitute?

Answered in 18 sources

Jesus is identified as our substitute through His role as the Lamb of God, fulfilling hundreds of prophecies and typologies in Scripture concerning the sacrificial system.

The affirmation that Jesus is our substitute is deeply embedded in the biblical narrative and especially in the sacrificial system established in the Old Testament. The Lamb, as described in Exodus 12, was to be without spot or blemish, symbolizing Christ's sinless nature. In John 1:29, John the Baptist's declaration of Jesus as the Lamb signifies that Jesus would be the ultimate sacrifice. Moreover, Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would bear our iniquities (Isaiah 53:5), further confirming His role as our substitute. Thus, believers trust that Jesus was made sin for us so that we could be justified by His righteousness, validating His position as our substitute before God.
