What does the Bible say about conscience?

Answered in 20 sources

The Bible teaches that the conscience is a God-given faculty that either accuses or excuses one's moral conduct based on God's law inscribed in the heart.

According to the Scripture, the conscience plays a critical role in the moral judgment of individuals. Hebrews 13:18 states that a good conscience is desirable and necessary for mutual honesty and trust. Romans 2:14-15 explains that Gentiles, by nature, exhibit the work of the law written in their hearts, indicating that every person possesses an inborn sense of right and wrong. While the conscience can guide individuals, it is often corrupted by sin; therefore, it must be understood in light of Scripture, as human judgment can be unreliable. It reflects the holy law of God, leading each person to recognize their need for redemption and how they stand before God.
