What does the Bible say about contentment?

Answered in 40 sources

The Bible teaches that true contentment comes from recognizing God's provision and being grateful for it, as seen in Philippians 4:11 and 1 Timothy 6:6-8.

In Philippians 4:11, the Apostle Paul states, "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content." This highlights that contentment is not dependent on external circumstances but is a learned disposition of the heart, grounded in trust in God’s provision. Similarly, 1 Timothy 6:6-8 states, "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content." This teaches that true contentment is found in recognizing our dependence on God and appreciating the blessings He provides.

Furthermore, the concept of contentment involves a level of indifference to material desires and worldly possessions, as being preoccupied with acquiring more often leads to discontent. Embracing an attitude of thankfulness for what we currently have aligns with biblical principles of stewardship and faith. In essence, the Bible encourages a mindset of gratitude and acceptance of God's will in every circumstance, leading to genuine contentment.
