What does the Bible say about God's wrath and mercy?

Answered in 8 sources

The Bible teaches that while God is angry with sin and His wrath is kindled against His enemies, He is also merciful and gracious, choosing to save some through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The Scriptures convey that God's indignation against sin is profound, as expressed in Nahum 1:6 which asks, 'Who can stand before his indignation?' This highlights the seriousness of God's wrath. However, alongside His justice, Scripture also reveals God's mercy and grace toward sinners. Despite humanity's rebellion, God has chosen to save a people, showing His love through the sending of His Son, Jesus Christ, who bore the wrath of God for those He came to redeem (Romans 5:8). Thus, the tension of divine wrath and mercy is beautifully resolved in the cross of Christ, where grace triumphs over judgment.
