What does the Bible say about loving the world?

Answered in 19 sources

1 John 2:15 warns Christians not to love the world or its things, indicating that true love for the Father cannot coexist with worldly affections.

The Bible explicitly commands in 1 John 2:15, 'Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.' This passage serves as a stern reminder for believers to prioritize their relationship with God over worldly pursuits. While it is not inherently sinful to engage in daily life, such as caring for family and work, these should not overshadow one's commitment to the Gospel and spiritual growth.

Furthermore, Christ calls His followers to lay up treasures in heaven rather than earth (Matthew 6:19-21). This means our hearts must reflect a genuine devotion to God, aligning our affections with eternal values. If we are consumed by materialism and transient gains, we risk losing sight of our primary purpose as believers. Therefore, we must reflect on our priorities and whether they genuinely demonstrate our love for Christ and His Gospel.
