What does the Bible say about propitiation?

Answered in 30 sources

The Bible describes propitiation as the act of appeasing God's wrath through a sacrificial offering, specifically referring to Jesus Christ as the ultimate propitiation through His blood.

In Romans 3:25, the Apostle Paul explains that God set forth Jesus to be a propitiation through faith in His blood. This means that Jesus' sacrifice was the means by which God satisfied His own justice and wrath against sin. Propitiation involves making amends for guilt or wrongdoing, which is precisely what Christ accomplished through His death on the cross. By bearing the penalty for our sins, Christ not only appeased God's anger but also secured our justification before Him.

This theological concept is crucial for understanding how God can be both just and the justifier of those who have faith in Christ. In Romans 3:26, we see that God declared His righteousness to demonstrate His justice while also justifying those who believe. Without such a propitiation, we would remain under the condemnation of the law, but through Christ, we find forgiveness and acceptance with God.
