What is the role of faith in salvation?

Answered in 29 sources

Faith is the means by which Christians accept God's gift of salvation, resting in the completed work of Christ rather than in their own efforts (Romans 10:17).

In the context of salvation, faith is the divinely granted ability to believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Romans 10:17 states, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." This underscores that faith is not a work we perform but a response to the truth of the gospel as it is proclaimed. Real saving faith is tied directly to the recognition of our own inability to save ourselves and the total reliance on Christ's finished work. When we embrace the gospel by faith, we acknowledge that salvation is solely a work of grace, initiated and completed by God, resulting in our eternal life. Faith is thus essential; it is not the cause of salvation, but the instrument through which we receive grace.
