What does the Bible say about having enough?

The Bible teaches that true contentment comes from recognizing Christ as our all-sufficient Savior.

In Genesis 33, we see the contrasting declarations of Esau and Jacob regarding sufficiency. Esau proclaims, 'I have enough,' based on his material wealth, while Jacob's 'I have enough' reflects a profound spiritual reality rooted in grace. This distinction highlights that true abundance is not about earthly possessions but about having a relationship with God through Christ. The Apostle Paul echoes this sentiment, indicating that all believers possess everything in Christ, establishing that true sufficiency is found in Him alone.

Genesis 33:4-11, 1 Corinthians 3:21-23

How do we know God's sovereignty in salvation is true?

The sovereignty of God in salvation is affirmed through scripture, notably Romans 9:15-16, where God declares His right to mercy.

God's sovereignty in salvation is a foundational doctrine in Reformed theology, confirmed through various scriptures. In Romans 9, the Apostle Paul discusses God's sovereign choices, demonstrating that mercy is not contingent upon human decision but rather on God's purpose and will. This doctrine assures believers that their salvation is secure because it is not dependent on their actions but rather on God's sovereign grace. Jacob's experience, highlighted in the message, illustrates how God intervenes in individuals' lives to bring them to the realization of their need for grace, emphasizing His sovereign hand in our spiritual journeys.

Romans 9:15-16, Malachi 1:2-3

Why is understanding grace important for Christians?

Understanding grace is vital for Christians as it reveals our complete dependence on God for salvation and sustenance.

Grace is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, as it embodies God's unmerited favor towards sinners. Jacob's encounter with God illustrates that true acknowledgment of one’s insufficiency leads to an embrace of grace. In recognizing that we are undeserving, we are led to appreciate the depth of God's mercy and love. This understanding transforms our relationship with God, allowing us to rest in His promises and provision rather than our own works. The recognition that our identity and worth are rooted in God's grace empowers believers to live in humility, gratitude, and assurance.

2 Corinthians 12:9, Ephesians 2:8-9

What does it mean to be a new creation in Christ?

Being a new creation in Christ means that through faith, we are transformed and given a new identity that reflects His righteousness.

In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul states, 'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.' This transformation is a work of God’s grace, whereby our past sins and identities are replaced by a new life in Christ. Jacob's renaming to Israel in the sermon symbolizes this profound shift; he is no longer defined by his deceit but becomes a prince with God. This new identity offers believers a renewed purpose and empowers us to live according to God’s will, reflecting His character in our lives.

2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 2:20

Good morning. Open your Bibles
with me, if you will, to the book of Genesis. Genesis chapter 33. I want to read verses 9 through
verse 11. And Esau said, I have enough,
my brother, keep that thou hast unto thyself. And Jacob said,
Nay, I pray thee, if thou have found grace in thy sight, then
receive my present at my hand. For therefore have I seen thy
face as though I had seen the face of God. and thou wast pleased with me.
Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee, because
God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough."
And he urged him, and he took it. This morning I want to speak
for a short while on this matter. When can a man, when can a woman
say, I have enough." When can a man say, I have enough? Esau said, I have enough. He
said, I have much. That's what that means. I have
much. And then when Jacob said, I have enough, he meant something
different. What is it to have enough? by nature think they have enough
to stand before God. They have enough goodness in
them. Men by nature believe that somehow
salvation depends on their free will. So I have enough. I have enough. If salvation depends
on free will, then man has enough. Man by nature do not believe
that God is sovereign in salvation. They say, whenever I get ready,
I'll make my decision. I have enough. Man by nature
do not believe God is sovereign in salvation. Man by nature believe
that they can save themselves. Man by nature cannot see. beyond the temporal things of
this world. And all they want is what we
got right now. And they say, I have enough.
I have enough. But when can a man say, truly,
I have enough? You know the story here. Jacob
and Esau, twin brothers of Isaac. And Jacob He is no better than
Esau, just like we are no better than any son of Adam by nature. We are all guilty, sinners. All have fallen short of the
glory of God. There is no difference. We are
all sinners. But Esau had no desire for the
promises of God. Esau had no desire. for the birthright. The Scriptures tell us that Esau
was a profane man. By nature, all men are profane. All men are ungodly. All men
are enemies of God. All men think just like Esau
thinks. But the difference between these
two, God says there in Malachi chapter 1 verse 2, it says, I
have loved you. Speaking of his people, I have
loved you, saith the Lord. Yet they say, wherein hast thou
loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? Were they not from the same lump
of clay? Was there any difference between
Esau and Jacob? But God said, Jacob have I loved.
Jacob have I loved. And because God loved Jacob,
God directed Jacob's path. God ordered his steps and brought
him unto an end of himself. God brought him to an end of
himself, and God brings every child of his to an end of yourself where you
know, I don't have enough. I don't have enough. If God should
call me before Him to answer for my best prayer, I don't have
enough. If God should call me, the Apostle
Paul says, I don't want to be found in my own righteousness,
which is of the law. And that righteousness he trusted
in before the Lord showed him. He said, I counted that great
gain. I had enough. I had enough before
the Lord came to me and showed me I didn't have anything. Look here. This is what men believe
by nature in Luke chapter 18. All men by nature are religious. They're dead in trespasses and
sins, but they think I have enough. This young ruler came to the
Lord. Verse 18 said, And a certain
ruler asked him, saying, Good master, what shall I do to inherit
life? What shall I do? I have enough
to do. I have enough with what's to
do. What shall I do? Just tell me
what to do and I'll do it because I can do it. That's what man
thinks by nature. Tell me what I should do to inherit
eternal life. And Jesus said unto him, Why
callest thou me good? There is none good, save one,
that is God. Thou knowest the commandments.
Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear
false witness, honor thy father and thy mother. And he said,
All these things have I kept from my youth up. All these things. I can do those things. Apostle
Paul said, I could, according to the law, I was blameless.
Blameless. And as long as a man is looking
at himself and his ability, as long as a man is looking to the
law without spiritual eyesight, because the law requires much
more than your outward obedience, it requires our inward obedience
from the heart and thought and intention. But as long as a man
is in this condition, he thinks, I can do it. All these things
have I done from my youth up. Now, when Jesus heard these things,
he said to him, Yet lackest thou one thing. He's not enough. He said, I have enough. What
can I do? He said, You lack one thing.
You don't have enough. The Lord Jesus Christ said this,
Except your righteousness should exceed the righteousness of the
scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no wise enter into the kingdom
of God. One thing you like. One thing
we like is the righteousness of God. One thing we like is
the righteousness of God. Man, by nature, thinks I have
enough. But bless God, His people, by
His grace. And if you're here this morning
and you're one of God's child and the Lord has not revealed
Himself to you, you perhaps think I have enough. until the Lord
shows you, brings you to an end of yourself, shuts you up to
where you know you're a dead man. And then the Lord Jesus
Christ reveals Himself to you. And when the Lord Jesus Christ
reveals Himself to you, reveals Himself in you, then you know,
I have enough. Why do I have enough? Look here.
I'd just come back after being 20 years in Padan Aran. I don't know if I'm saying that
right or not. Forgive my Spanish translation. Padan Aran. Okay, that's Spanish. And he'd
been there 20 years. He had run away from his brother
Esau because his brother Esau said, I'm going to kill him as
soon as my dad dies. I'm going to kill him because
he had cheated his brother out of his birthright. Never mind,
his brother was a profane man and did not care about the promise
and sold his birthright for a pottage, for a bowl of meat, a soup, stew. He said, I don't care. Give me
that right now. I want what I got right now.
Well, you know the story. with the help of his mother,
deceived their father, Isaac. And Isaac blessed Jacob, gave
him the birthright, blessed him. And Esau came in afterwards,
and he said, oh, father, bless me. He said, I can't bless you. I've already blessed your brother. He deceived me. And Esau was
wroth. He said, I'm going to kill him.
So his mother heard that and she said, You run away to my
family's home. And Isaac said, Don't take a
wife from the daughters here of this land. Go back to your
mother's family and get a wife there. So here went Jacob. And
all along he was running away, running away. The Lord revealed
Himself to him. The Lord came to him in that
ladder. The Lord came to him and told
him, I'm God. Well, I'm not going to go through
the whole story. I will be here more than 15 minutes.
But he said, he revealed himself to him. And Jacob said, if you'll
keep me, if you go with me, then you'll be my God. That's the
only way we're going to come before him is if he takes us
all the way. If he takes us all the way. Lord,
your promise is sure. The only way I'm going to get
there is if you take me." Well, now 20 years had gone by. You
know the story. He was tricked by his father-in-law,
Laban. He's of the same cut Laban is.
He's just as much a cheat as Jacob was. Tricked him. And he got Leah first. Then he
got his wife, Rachel. And now 20 years have gone by,
and the Lord tells him, go back to Canaan. And he's coming back
to Canaan, and the word comes to him that Esau's coming after
him. He still hears that ringing in
his ear, I'm going to kill my brother. Esau's coming after
to see you, and there's 400 men with him. He's coming for war. He's packing for bear. He's wanting
to fight. Jacob, he's all afraid. And it tells us that he split
his camp up. Made one part go ahead and another
one go this way. And he sent out presents, one
before the other, to try to appease his brother. His brother said,
what does this all mean? He said, I'm trying to get grace before
your eyes. But here's what happened when he was left alone. Look
here in Genesis chapter 33. Genesis chapter 33. Verse 22. Wait a minute. Yeah, verse. Excuse me, it's Genesis. Genesis 32. Verse 23 says, And he took them,
and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had. And Jacob was left alone. Jacob was left alone. That's a good place to be. There's
no more scheming to be made. There's no more scheming to be
made. Now the truth is coming out.
I don't have anything to bargain with. He's left alone. And it
said, And there wrestled a man with
him until the breaking of the day. Who was that man? Who was that man that wrestled
with Jacob to the breaking of the day? It's none other than
the pre-incarnate Lord Jesus Christ. Came to him, just like
he comes to all of his children. He comes to all of His children.
And He wrestled with Him to the breaking of the day. And when
He saw that He prevailed not against Him. You know that doesn't
mean that Jacob was more powerful than Him. You know that. But
grace once given and faith once given will not let go. He gives us faith that we believe. He gives us faith that we cling. I will not let you go. I'm not
going to let you go. He prevailed not against him.
He touched him in the hall of his thigh, and Jacob's thigh
was out of joint as he wrestled with him. The Lord Jesus Christ
touched him, and the Lord Jesus Christ touches his people. And
once he touches it, they don't ever walk the same. They don't
walk the same. You had a walk before, high and
mighty, but now you walk differently. Now you follow the Lamb. And He said, Let Me go, for the
day breaketh. And He said, I will not let thee
go, except thou bless Me. I can have all these things,
but that means nothing if you don't bless Me. I can have health. But that means nothing if you
don't bless me. I can have wealth, but that does not mean anything
unless you bless me. What shall it profit a man if
he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? What shall
he give in exchange? Bless me. What is that blessing
he's asking for? What is that blessing that we
need from the Lord Jesus Christ? He said, What's your name? Who
are you? What's your name? He knew who
he was. But there's a confession to be
made. I'm the sinner. I'm Jacob. I'm the surplanter. I'm the one who would rob you
of your glory. That's what Jacob would do, would
take the first place of his brother. I'm the supplanter. I'm the sinner. There's good news for sinners.
There's good news. Christ came to save sinners. What's your name? My name's Jacob. And he said unto him, Thy name shall be called no more
Jacob. Now, that's a new person. A new person. That's the blessing
we need. We need to be new creatures in
Christ Jesus. We need to be made new creatures
in Christ Jesus. To know. To know. That we're created anew. We have
a new man. Your name shall be called Israel.
For as a prince hast thou had power with God and men. and has
prevailed. And Jacob asked him, Tell me,
I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it
that thou ask me my name? And he blessed him there. You
know my name. You know my name. I'm the only
one that can change your name. I'm the only one that can give
you a new nature. He said, Bless me. Now, when Jacob came to his
brother Esau, He said, he said, take my presence. Now, notice here it says in verse
11, verse 33. I'm going to close with this. Take my blessing that I brought
to thee. Notice here, because God has
dealt graciously with me. God has had grace. God has shown
grace to me. That's why you have enough. God
has had grace. God has shown mercy to me. And
because I have that word enough there is the word all things. I have only time you'll have
enough is when you have all things. If you had a million dollars,
would you have enough? No. You'd want another. I know I'm telling the truth.
You have what you've got right now and you want more. These
things cannot satisfy our soul. But in Christ Jesus, because
of the grace that we've been given in Christ Jesus before
the foundation of the world, we have all things. The Apostle
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3, he's talking to dear brethren,
believers in Corinthians, and we're Prone to, in the flesh,
we're prone to bicker and argue and fall out of sorts and things
like that. And the Apostle Paul said, don't
do that. Don't do that. He said in verse 21, don't. Verse
21 of chapter three, he said, therefore, let no man glory in
man. Don't get the squabbling about
men. We're all men. Let no man glory in man for all
things are yours. That's the way you don't covet
anything, is you have everything. If you have everything, what
are you going to covet? All things are yours, whether
Paul or Apollos or Cephas, listen here, or the world. All things
are yours. Why? How? Jesus Christ is the
Creator of all things. By Him, all things were made.
He's the owner and you, his bride, are one with Christ. All things are yours. The world,
how about life? Life, this life and life eternal,
it's yours. And notice here, death. Death,
it's yours. All things present. And all things
to come, all are yours. When can a man say, I have enough? When by the grace of God, he
has Christ Jesus. Until that time, he can say I
have much, but he has nothing. May the Lord bless us for it.
