The Bible teaches that God has provided something better in Christ, surpassing the types and shadows of the Old Testament.
In Hebrews 11:40, it is stated that God has provided something better for us. This better thing refers to the fulfillment of the promises made through the Old Testament figures, who merely pointed to Christ. Unlike them, we have the person of Christ himself, who embodies the hope, testament, and covenant that were only shadows before his coming. Everything that the Old Testament saints experienced pointed towards the ultimate reality found in Jesus, making our hope and faith far greater than that of those who came before.
Hebrews 11:32-40
Christ is the better sacrifice because His offering of Himself once for all fulfills the need for ongoing sacrifices.
According to Hebrews 10:4, it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. The sacrifices of the Old Testament were never intended to be the ultimate solution for sin; they were types that pointed to the one true sacrifice. In Christ, we have a better sacrifice—the sacrifice of the Son of God—who offered Himself once for all, securing eternal redemption for His people (Hebrews 9:12). This definitive act removes the necessity of animal sacrifices, as the ultimate price has already been paid. Therefore, Christ's sacrifice surpasses all others in its significance and efficacy.
Hebrews 10:4, Hebrews 9:12
The resurrection of Christ is significant as it affirms our hope for eternal life with Him, surpassing any earthly resurrection.
In 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul declares that Christ has been raised from the dead as the firstfruits of those who have died. This indicates that just as Christ was resurrected, so will all believers be resurrected at His coming. Unlike the resurrected individuals in the Old Testament who eventually died again, Christ's resurrection is eternal and guarantees our own resurrection to eternal life. This promise provides Christians with the assurance that death has been defeated, and we can look forward to a future where we will be with the Lord forever. The better resurrection signifies a transformative promise of eternal life that goes beyond temporary physical life.
