Turn back with me to Exodus chapter
2. I love Exodus. I really love
this book. I love it so much. Chapter 2
introduces Moses to us. God's deliverer of the children
of Israel. And we're going to see that.
We're going to see a piece of that. But tonight, the focus
of this message is on His mother. That's what we're going to look
at tonight. I love going verse by verse through
the scripture because the Lord has given us everything. Everything
we need. Everything we need to know. And
as we go verse by verse, we come to the whole counsel of God.
We're going to look at the subject is the faith of Moses' mother. Faith is our subject. Exodus 2 verse 1 says, And there
went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of
Levi, and the woman conceived and bare a son. The house of Levi, the Levites
were God's priests. They were the ones who slaughtered
the sacrifice, the Levites. They were the ones who carried
the Ark of the Covenant. They had that wonderful privilege.
They were the ones who reminded the people of God's righteousness,
His holiness. through sacrifice. They were
the ones who represented peace with God through a sacrifice,
the Levites. Now listen to this, don't turn
but just listen to this scripture. Psalm 85 verse 10 says, Mercy
and truth are met together. Righteousness and peace have
kissed each other. How is that possible? In Jesus
Christ. Now it says in verse 1, There
went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife the daughter
of Levi, and the woman conceived and bare a son. I love that. I love that. It goes on to say,
When she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him,
Three months. Now why did she hide him? Chapter
1 verse 22 says, Pharaoh charged all his people saying, every
son that is born you shall cast into the river. So she was afraid. She was afraid. She was terrified. She was unsure of what the future
held for Moses. He's supposed to be thrown in
a river. For her, she loves Him. She doesn't want to lose Him. And we can relate to that. We
can relate to that. We cry out unto the Lord for
our children, don't we? We love them. We don't want to
lose them. We're afraid for them. We're
afraid for their future. Verse 3 says, And when she could
not longer hide him, there was nothing more she could do for
him. She took for him an ark of bulrushes,
and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child
therein, And she laid it in the flags by the river's brink. When
she finally realized, I can't do anything for this child, she put him in an ark. She put him in an ark made of
bulrushes, daubed with slime and pitch. That ark is Jesus
Christ. That slime and pitch is His atoning
blood covered all over it. God told Noah to build an ark. And that ark was Jesus Christ.
He said, everyone and everything inside this ark will live. And everyone and everything outside
of this ark will die. That's Jesus Christ. In the tabernacle, inside the
most holy place, God put an ark. The ark of the covenant. That
ark was Christ. It had three things inside that
ark. The law of God, the tables that
God gave Moses, the Ten Commandments. That law was kept inside that
ark. That's double meaning. He put it inside that ark, but
that law was kept inside that ark. That ark is Christ. Inside that ark of the covenant
was a bowl of manna that God sent down. Manna. And the Lord said, before He
quit sending it, He said, I want you to scoop some of it up, I
want you to put it in a bowl, and I want you to put it inside
that ark. The sustaining, satisfying, filling, nourishing bread of
heaven was in that ark. And that ark is Christ. The third
thing that was in that ark of the covenant was Aaron's rod
that budded, a stick. Aaron's stick that budded. The root of life was in that
ark. Three things inside that ark.
When Moses' mother finally saw, this thing is not in my hands.
They were killing babies is what they were doing, throwing them
in the river. She hit him as long as she could. His life is
out of my hands. When she finally saw that, she
put him in the ark. That is faith. That's what faith
is. Turn with me over to Psalm chapter
55. Psalm 55 and look at verse 22. It says, upon the Lord, and He shall sustain
thee. He shall never suffer the righteous
to be moved. Cast thy burden upon the Lord."
Cast thy burden upon the Lord. If you believe Him, and if you
believe this Word, if when we read these things you believe
what it says, cast your burden upon the Lord. She had this burden and she put
it in the ark. Turn over to Psalm 37. Psalm
37 and look at verse 5. It says, Commit thy way unto
the Lord. Trust also in Him, and He shall
bring it to pass. Commit thy way, I've got a center
margin for that, and it says, roll thy way upon. Roll your burden over to Him. Whatever is burdening you, whatever
is troubling you, whatever is too much for you, which is about
everything for me, Whatever is impossible to you, the Lord says,
roll it over to me and I'll take care of it. Nothing was better sounding to
my ears than whenever I had a problem growing up and I told my dad
about it and he said, I'll take care of it. It's all for me. He'll take care
of it. Roll your burden over to Him.
Peter said in 1 Peter 5, cast all your care upon Him, for He
careth for you. Isn't that wonderful? I wish
we could get a hold of that. I wish I could get a hold of
that. How many things are we in care over? How many things
are we worried about, really? Everything. Roll it over to Him. Put it in the ark. Commit your all, everything you
are and everything that you have to the ark, to the Lord Jesus
Christ. My wife and my children, Lord,
they're in your hands every day. We're not promised another day,
are we? My life and my health, everything about me. Our jobs,
Lord, it's in Your hands. He'll provide. This church, this
ministry, this work, Lord, it's in Your hands. He'll provide. Our text back in Exodus chapter
2, verse 3 says, When she could not longer hide Him, She took
for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and
with pitch, and put the child therein, and she laid it in the
flags by the river's brink. And his sister stood afar off
to wit what would be done to him." We're about to see how
his sister represents God's providence, God's purpose, God's will, His
Spirit. Verse 5 says, And the daughter
of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river. Now Moses'
mother, by faith, commits him to this ark. And she puts him in the river.
Same river they're throwing babies in. She sends him out. She lets him
go. Hoping that all things would
work together for good. I hope everything works out well.
Hoping that somehow He would be provided for. That's her child. Can you imagine? Hoping that
somebody is going to care for that child. She loves that child.
Hoping that child is going to be spared. And who is it that
comes down to that exact place in the river? You know how big
that river is? At that exact moment in time, but the daughter
of the most powerful man in the world. That's amazing, isn't it? The daughter of Pharaoh came
down to wash herself at the river And her maidens walked along
by the riverside, and when she saw the ark among the flags,
she sent her maid to fetch it." It's amazing. This story is amazing. It's almost unbelievable, really,
that the Lord could work out something like this, that He's
able to do something like this. Well, we have a more sure word
of prophecy than she had. We have more reason to believe
than she did. She didn't have all this. Let's see what the Lord did for
this woman. Verse 6 says, When she had opened it, Pharaoh's
daughter, she saw the child, and behold, the babe wept, and
she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews'
children. Our Lord said through Isaiah, he shall grow up before
him as a tender plant, as a root at a dry ground. That's how he's
going to come forth. The babe wept and she had compassion
on him. Verse 7 says, Then said his sister,
Moses' sister, the providence of God, the purpose of God, The
will of God and the timing of God said in verse 7, Then said
his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a
nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? He's crying on purpose. The babe wept. He's hungry. She said, Shall I go call a woman
to nurse this child for you? Verse 8 says, And Pharaoh's daughter
said to her, Yes. That's what I want you to do.
Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother. Our Lord is so good. He is so,
so good. This is what the Lord said. Cast
your bread upon the water and you'll see it again. It doesn't look like you're going
to get it back, but if you throw it out, knowing He is able to
do whatever He wants to do, you'll get it back. But He doesn't stop there. Look
at verse 9. Pharaoh's daughter said unto
her, that's Moses' mother. His sister has gone and gotten
his mother and his mother has come. And Pharaoh's daughter
said unto Moses' mother, take this child away. Take this child
back to your house. Keep him with you all the time.
And nurse it for me. You hold this child. You love
this child. You embrace this child. You care
for this child. She said, and I'll pay you to
do it. I would preach for free. Verse nine says, I will give
you, I'll give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child
and nursed it. Our Lord said, ìGive, and it
shall be given unto you. Good measure, pressed down, and
shaken together, and running over shall men give unto your
bosom. For with the same measure that
you meet with all, it shall be measured unto you again.î Now
let me ask you this, you all called a pastor on 10-11-9. And I accepted on 10, 11, 12.
I'll always remember that. Did you have the money to pay
for a pastor? No. Do you have the money right now
to pay my salary? Yes. He honors His Word. He honors
His Word. Faith is a gift of God. And that same faith is rewarded
by God. Isn't that amazing? He gives
the faith. He gives us the ability to use
and experience the faith and then He rewards us for the faith. The scripture says Abraham just
believed God. That's all Abraham did. And it
was counted unto him for righteousness. Alright, so let's close with
verse 10. It says, "...and the child grew." Moses, the one who
represents our Deliverer. The one who represents our Savior. The one who represents our help.
Verse 10 says, "...the child grew, and she brought him unto
Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son, and she called his name
Moses." That means drawn out. And she said, because I drew
him out of the water. Now let's see right off the bat
how Moses represents our Deliverer. And in the next chapter especially,
we'll really enter into how the Lord used him as our Deliverer. Now Moses, by law, This is my
favorite part, okay? Let me just interject that. This
is my favorite part. Moses, by law, according to the
law of Pharaoh, was supposed to be cast into the river. Chapter 1, verse 22, let's read
it again. Pharaoh charged all his people,
saying, Every son that is born you shall cast into the river.
That was the law. And in obedience to the law,
Moses went in that river. But of all those sons that went
into that river, Moses was the only one that came back out. That was the river of death.
Up from the grave he arose. He went in just like everybody
else, according to the law. But He's the only one that came
back out. And He is going to deliver His
people. It would seem like an impossible
journey, it really would. But with God, nothing is impossible. Nothing. The faith of Moses' mother I
ask and we ask just like the disciples did. Lord, increase
our faith. He's able. He's able. Lord, just increase our faith.
Give us a heart to give. He'll cover it. He'll provide
for it. Increase our faith. All right,
I pray that the Lord would bless His Word. Let's stand together.
