He lives and lives with loving
and guided and staidly. Held up in grief, has not He
brought thee relief? Praying His Queen for His shamefully. Praise ye the Lord, O let all
that is fainting adore Him. All that hath flight may rest,
come now with praises before Him. Lift ye your ears, Thank
you, John. Thank you, John. Thank you, Robin. Psalm 91 now. Go over there. Psalm 91. You've heard me many times urge us to read this psalm over
and over again. Psalm 90 and 91. Psalm 90 speaks
of our great God, sovereignty and creator and the frailty of
the flesh, the brevity of life, teaching us to number our days.
And then Psalm 91 tells us of our complete safety and salvation
in our God. Psalm 91. This was requested
by Sister Karen Anderson. It's a very appropriate, very
timely psalm right now. Very timely. Verse 1, He that
dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide,
shall dwell under the shadow of the Almighty. Remember Brother Rowland's message,
Revelation 1, I am the Almighty. He that dwelleth in the secret
place. What secret place is he talking
about? He's talking about himself. Look
at verse 1 of chapter 90, Psalm 90, Lord thou hast been our dwelling
place in all generations. Our God is hidden to the wise
and the prudent, but He's revealed unto us. His children. Unseen
to the world. Hidden to the world. But we see
Him. We see His hand and everything.
God Himself, our Lord, is our dwelling place. In Him we live
and move and have our being. And that my soul knoweth right
well. Don't you? In Him. Our life is
hid. Hid with Christ in God. We believe in God. It says in
verse 1, Dwell in the secret place of the Most High. There's none higher. The Almighty. Under the shadow of the Almighty. God is not seen, but He casts
a great shadow, doesn't He? I almost ran into Melody. She
was coming up the steps, and I was heading down the steps,
and she stopped abruptly, and she said, I saw your shadow.
I saw you coming. Well, we see a shadow everywhere,
don't we? We see our God in all things
that He hath made in our lives and providence in our lives.
We dwell under the shadow of the Almighty. Verse 2, I will
say, whoever wrote this, we believe it's Moses. I will say, and this
is what I say, it's what you say, of the Lord, of Jehovah. He is my refuge. and my fortress. He's my God. This God is our
God. He will be our guide even unto
death. He's our refuge, our fortress.
Is that what you say? That's what I say. That's what
Moses said. All who know Him, that's their
testimony. In God we trust. In God we trust. He is my refuge,
my fortress, my God. In Him will I trust. The Lord
is my refuge. There are too many names. Brother Roland pointed out there
were 16 or 18 descriptions of Christ in Revelation 1. Names
and titles. Well, throughout the scriptures,
probably 1,600. The Lord is my refuge, my fortress, my high
tower, my rock, my defense, my shield, my son, my salvation,
my wisdom. In Him will I trust. No one else
is to be trusted. Nothing else. It's a vain thing.
Vain is the help of man. He is the Lord. The Lord God
in whose hands our breath is and all our ways. Trust Him. Oh, I hope we leave here trusting
Him more than when we came. Verse 3, surely. Don't you like
the surelys of the Scripture? Where God says, I will, you shall,
Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,
and from the noisome pestilence. Surely. Turn with me to Daniel
chapter 3. A little book of Daniel chapter
3. The story of the three Hebrew children. Whose names we need
to know. Their correct names. Their names
are not Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. That's the pagan names
that the heathen gave them. Their names are Hananiah, Mashiach,
and Azariah. which has the name of God in
each of their names, Elohim and Jehovah. But these three Hebrew
children were threatened, their lives were threatened that they
were going to be thrown into the fiery furnace for not obeying
the laws of the land. Okay? Alright, verse 15, the
last line of verse 15, Nebuchadnezzar said, If you don't do what we
say, what everybody else is doing, who is that God that shall deliver
you out of my hands? You see, I'm God, he thought.
Boy, he found out, didn't he? Nebuchadnezzar sure found out.
And God is so merciful, he saved this man. Nothing too hard for
the Lord. All right? Shadrach, Meshach,
and Abednego, that's their Chaldean name. Hannah and I and Moshe
on Azariah, they said, we don't have to stop and think about
it. We're not careful to answer thee
in this matter. If it be so, if you throw us
in the furnace, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us
from the burning fire furnace. He's able. But if He doesn't,
if we die in the furnace, He's going to deliver us from you. Do we not understand that our
God is able to deliver us from anybody and anything? Do we? Besides whatever comes our way,
He sent it, and He's able to deliver us. But if He doesn't,
and whatever He sends, if it's the means of taking us out of
this place, boy, He's really delivered us in, hasn't He? From
all pain, all sin, all suffering, all things. Oh, let this be my testimony.
He's able, but if He doesn't, if He kills me, though He slay
me, I'll trust Him. Well, look at what old Nebuchadnezzar
said down in verse 29. He found out the Lord delivered
them. I make a decree, every people,
nation, language, which speak anything amiss against the God
of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, be cut in pieces, their house
made like a dunghill, because there is no other God that can
deliver after this soul. Surely He shall deliver thee
from the snare of the fowler. I was going to have you go to
Daniel chapter 6, and we were going to look at Daniel in the
lion's den. The king said, is thy God able to deliver thee?
He's able. He's able, all right, indeed.
Because there's none that can deliver after this sort. He's
the deliverer, that's His name. All right, verse 3 says, Surely
He shall deliver thee, that is, those who trust Him, those who
dwell in Him, who believe Him, who know Him, who love Him, He
shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler." Who's that? That's
Satan. That fowl fiend. Satan. He's the adversary of God's people. He shall deliver us from the
snare of the fowler. Read on. And from noisome pestilence. Noisome pestilence. That's the
noise of pests. Did you hear those cicadas when
they were Oh, everywhere. Everybody hear them? We couldn't
help but hear them. I'm hard of hearing and I can
hear them. They were everywhere. Just noise, noise, noise. Well, did that hurt you? It was annoying, wasn't it? Locusts is what they are, akin
to. If you would turn on all the
social medias right now in the world, it would sound like cicadas. Right now, we're sitting here
with our spiritual fingers in our ears, as it were, listening
to the Word of God. He's delivering us right now
through His Word from the noisome pestilence. Just a bunch of noise.
Don't pay attention to it. I'll give you a real easy way
to deal with the noisome pestilence. Turn it off. Don't have to hear
it. It won't bother you. Right? He shall deliver thee. This is what delivers us, people.
Right now, you'll never have more peace and comfort and assurance
than you're sitting right now clothed in the righteousness
of Christ in your right mind, that is, believing, trusting
the Lord. He's able. He does whatever He's
got. He shall cover thee, verse 4,
cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou
trust. He shall cover thee under His
wings. His truth shall be thy shield
and buckler. He calls Himself a shield. He calls His truth a buckler,
a shield. His truth shields us. It's the
word of truth. Shields us from the fiery darts
of the wicked. We're not wrestling with flesh
and blood. We're not. We never have been. Flesh is
a problem. The flesh lusts against the spirit.
But the God of this world is the one who manipulates the flesh
and the thing. He's the one we're wrestling
with, okay? The fiery darts of the wicked.
He's the one. And God's truth is our shield. The fiery darts of the wicked
are darts of fear. Worry. Doubt. Lies. Hold up the shield. Shield of faith. I believe God. These fiery darts of deceit. Temptations. Look, this is good.
Whom resist, Peter said, in the faith. His truth shall be our
shield. God is true. And let every man
be a liar. God is true. Let's trust the
Lord, shall we? His truth is His shield and buckler. Verse 5, Thou shalt not be afraid. Thou shalt not be afraid for
the terror by night, nor for the error that flieth by day.
This is both a fact that if you really trust the Lord, and you
dwell in Him, You have nothing to be afraid of. It's a fact.
And it's a command. Whenever you read in Scriptures,
the Lord says, Thou shalt not. That's a command. Thou shalt
not covet. Thou shalt not. This is a command.
Thou shalt not be afraid. In Isaiah 8, He said, Don't fear
their fear. Didn't He? What fear? Any fear. Didn't He? Don't fear their fear.
Fear the Lord, let Him be your dread. Now, shout not, be afraid. And
if we really believe, we dwell in Him, if we really trust in
Him, if we really like David, fly to Him, flee to Him for refuge,
you won't be afraid. For the terror by night, or the
error that flies by day. You know, just a few years ago,
all that anyone could talk about was terrorists. Remember? Terrorists. Terrorists. Oh, he's
terrorists. Terrorists over here. Terrorists
over there. Nobody talking about terrorists now. What are they
talking about? Pestilence. Oh, here's pestilence.
Pestilence. What's it going to be tomorrow?
He shall deliver thee. Thou shalt not be afraid for
the terror by night. Look at Psalm Matthew. Hold on a minute. Let's read
the next verse. For the pestilence that walketh
in darkness, nor for the destruction it wastes at that noonday. Pestilence,
terror, arrows, bullets, whatever it may be. Weapons, pestilence,
destruction, that means any kind of calamity, any kind of disaster,
natural disaster, whatever it is. Matthew 24. Now go over there. Matthew 24. Our Lord said, fear not, fear
not. Look at Matthew 24. This is the
Lord speaking to His disciples who asked Him about the end. Okay? They asked Him about the
end, and so He's telling them. He's summing everything up. Matthew
24, verse 6. He said, Ye shall hear of wars
and rumors of wars. See that ye be not troubled.
He's always telling us that. Don't be troubled. War. Oh, war. That's about the worst thing
that could happen. He said, don't be troubled. All these things
must come to pass. Verse 7. Nations shall rise against
nations. Kingdom against kingdom. There
shall be famines and pestilences and earthquakes and diverse places. These are just the beginning
of sorrow. Verse 12. Iniquity shall abound, the love of man
shall wax cold, and he that shall endure unto the end, the same
shall be saved, and the gospels of the kingdom shall be preached
in all the world for a witness unto all the nations, and then
shall the end come." Verse 21, there shall be great tribulation
such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, nor
ever shall be. Verse 30, And then shall appear
the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then shall all the
tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man
coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. That's
what we heard Sunday, isn't it? Verse 31. And he shall send his
angels with a great sound of a trumpet. They shall gather
together his elect from the four winds from one end of heaven
unto the other. Verse 33. When you see all these
things, know it's near. That is, I'm near. He's near.
Even at the door. At the door. Behold, He's coming. He's on His way. Our Lord said in Luke 21, He
said, when you see all these things, look up. Hope up. Look up. Your redemption. Now lift up your head. Don't
hang down. Don't hang down. Lift up your
head. So back in our text. Psalm 91. Thou shalt not be afraid
of pestilence, of walking in darkness, of destruction at waste
at noonday. Verse 7. A thousand shall fall
at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand. It shall not
come nigh thee. What's he talking about? Arrows.
He just talked about arrows flying. David was very aware of arrows. That was a weapon of choice because
it was far reaching, like our guns today. And there were men
back then, Brother Kelly, that could shoot left hand and right
hand riding on a horse. You read it. I mean, they were
sharpshooters, boy. Not one ever hit David. He saw
thousands of them fall. Those of you who have read history
of warfare, you know how they used to rain arrows down. They'd
have a whole army of thousands and thousands of soldiers. and
just shoot arrows up in the air, and he ran down, it's going to
hit somebody. David died in his bed. Everybody wanted him dead. They couldn't touch him. I told
you about my father, you know, being in the Navy, in Iwo Jima,
Okinawa, and 130 ships all around him sunk. One in front of him
and one behind him sunk. It didn't come to him. Brother
Cecil Roach, who was a leading member, a man the Lord used,
very instrumental in my life, and the Lord giving me faith,
and a teacher, an elder in the church. He was a fighter pilot. World War II. Came back from
one mission and counted 85 bullet holes in his aircraft. They couldn't bring him down.
He has to preach the gospel. We're all immortal until the
Lord says it's time. And then, one error. One germ. Nothing nobody can do to stop
it. Right? Our bounds are set. A number
of our months are with the Lord. We cannot pass. But until then,
nothing can pass through this shield who is our Lord Himself.
Nothing and no one. The error that flies by day. Thousands shall fall at thy side,
ten thousand shall not come nigh thee. Arrows. You know, an automobile
is a two ton flying projectile, isn't it? Isn't it? Seventy miles an hour down the
road, about three or four feet from another one. I've been driving
since 1970. I've been driving almost fifty
years. And I've been in three serious,
sorry to say accidents, they weren't accidents, three serious
car wrecks. I was driving one time and was
not driving the other two. Serious. Totals. Rolled over
hill in a Volkswagen. Hit a telephone pole head-on
in a Volkswagen. And I wasn't wearing a seatbelt
either time. Seatbelts don't save lives, God
does. He might use them, he might not.
Let's give glory where it's due, shan't we? Oh yes, the Lord uses
means, but we don't glorify means, we glorify God. We don't trust
in the means. He might use them, He might not.
We thank Him for medicine, we thank Him, but we don't glory
in, we don't trust in, we don't look to these means. We don't wear, well, I could
go on. I started to say, we don't wear
seatbelts in here. or masks. A thousand shall fall at thy
side. Verse 8, that you are going to see with your eyes, verse
8, the reward of the wicked. That's Psalm 37, and I was envious
at the foolish. Psalm 73, my religion's in vain
till I went into the sanctuary, and I saw their end. And he said,
you're going to see the reward of the wicked. Well, who are
the wicked? Let me just very briefly tell you from Psalm 50.
The wicked. Here's the wicked. The Lord says,
I've spoken. The mighty God had called the
earth and the rising of the sun, the going down of the saint.
And He called His people. And He told His people, you call
upon Me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you and you shall
glorify Me. But unto the wicked, God said. Seeing you hate instruction,
and you cast my words behind you, you give no thought to my word. He says, you consider this now,
you that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces. The wicked are
those that forget God. Those that have no use for God.
Those that say, no God. That's the wicked. And what separates us from the
wicked is God. The faith that He gives us. The righteous. Those that believe
Him. Made righteous by faith. What a gift. What a blessing.
They said, you're going to see it. Brother Roland preached on
it. Every eye shall see Him. Weeping
and wailing. We just read it. It's going to
be a horrible time, but not for us. for God's people. Verse 10, There shall no evil
befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
Is that what he says? That's what he says. What's he
mean? He means what he says. Did you
read the bulletin I sent for Sunday? Sunday's bulletin. I
sent it by email to everyone that gets emails. If you're like
most, you don't like me, You don't always check your email.
Let me just read. Charles Spurgeon wrote this,
and there's one article in our bulletin that's this. Spurgeon,
in 1854, cholera hit England. And people
were dropping dead everywhere. And he was right in the middle
of it. What was he doing? Visiting the sick. Every day. Okay? Was he afraid? Yes. But he said
these verses came to his mind one day. Well, he saw it in a
shop window. These verses. Verses 9 and 10. Because thou hast made the Lord,
which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation, there
shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy
dwelling. And he said, He said, I felt so secure of
evil. I suffered no harm. The providence
that moved the person to put this verse in the window, I gratefully
acknowledge the remembrance of his word. I adore the Lord for
it. The effect on my heart was immediate.
He went on to say in this article, he said, it's impossible that
any ill or evil in the true sense should happen to the man who
the Lord loved. The most crushing calamities
only shorten our journey here and hasten us to Him. It's not
ill. Ill to the believer is not ill. It's good in a mysterious form. Losses enrich us. Sickness are
our medicine. David says, good for me to be
afflicted, that I might learn my statute. Reproach is our honor. Death is gain. No evil. In the strict sense of the word.
No evil can happen to God's people. It's not possible. All things
work together for what? What's the opposite of evil?
Good. All things work together for
good, for them that love God. It is a call to go in His person.
Do you think you thank the Lord, those that love Him, that He
first loved? He is going to let anything evil
happen to Him? Would you? Could you? That person that flees, that
someone came to you begging you, please hide me, please save me,
would you, please, would you? I am trusting you, will you please
hide me? Would you? God cannot not do
that. He's God, he's not a man. No
evil shall befall us. Nothing evil. Listen, the plagues to the Egyptians
were just that. Just like this plague today.
Plagues of Egypt then and now sent by God for punishment of
sin. Our sins were punished in Christ
on Calvary, weren't they? It's not punishment. But they're
trials, whatever we go through. It's not a plague to us, it's
a trial of our faith, whether we get cancer or whatever it
may be. It's a trial of our faith. It's not punishment, but an opportunity
to witness of our Lord. An opportunity to glorify our
Lord. Brother Scott said every believer
has in his lifetime at least one opportunity, real opportunity,
to go through something really deep, to witness and testify
of his Lord. And when that happens, what God's
people need to say is, the Lord did this. Like Job. The Lord sent Job everything.
The Lord sent it. Didn't He? Enemies, death, sickness. The Lord sent it all. And Job
said that. The Lord did this. And Job sinned
not, but he glorified God. That's why God sent it. Did you hear of the patience
of Job? The faith of Job that God gave
him? Let's have just a little bit,
shall we? Whatever he sends, it's not evil,
it's good. It's for his glory. It's for
our good. And it's an opportunity for us
to say, God did that. And I trust Him. We really do
live by faith. And we've got to show it. It's
not sight. Right? The Lord did. For His glory,
our good. Fear not. I was going to turn
to Isaiah 43. How many times he told me, Jacob,
fear not. He said, I gave Egypt for you.
I gave Egypt for you. Who? Jacob. Well, I'm no worse
than Jacob. I'm as bad. I'm no worse. This
world exists for God's people. Are you a believer? Are you a
child of God? Do you look to Him? Do you trust Him? Do you
trust Christ? This world exists for you. Yes, it does. All things
are for your sake. Isn't that what Paul wrote to
the Corinthians? Read on. No evil shall befall thee, neither
shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. Whatever comes nigh,
it's not a plague for punishment, it's a trial of your faith. His
glory. He shall give His angels charge
over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Can you not? Can not every adult
believer in here who's lived 40, 50, 60 or more years attest
to this, testify to this fact that the Lord has watched over
us in so many ways? Can you not look back? Brother
Ron, can you not look back and see how He's... I told you about
You know, my friends and I were in the Volkswagen. You know what wild young men
do. How did I get through that? The Lord sent His
angel. The Lord had me fall off a building
60 feet, land on my back. I walked to the ambulance. Who
did that? The Lord did that. Everyone in
here has story after story. Angels are real. We can't see
them, but they're real. And He gives them charge. Watch
over that woman. You know what one angel is capable
of? Watch over that man. Go fetch him. They do His bidding,
ministers of Him. Keep thee in all thy ways. Verse
12, They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy
foot against a stone. They shall bear thee up in their
hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. You know, we're
very liable to fall, aren't we? We walk by faith, but it's very
weak faith. And we stumble over the least
little thing. Have you ever stumped your toe? Oh, is there anything that hurts
worse than that? Stump your toe? Then you're no good for the rest
of the day. I dropped a bowling ball on my toe one day. I was
worthless for about a week. There are little things here
and there, everything that we stumble over and stumble into
and fall into, and it gives this angel... Whatever we stumble
at or whatever we fall, He picks us up again, but it's for our
good. He allows it to happen for our good, for our humility,
so that we look to Him and call upon Him. But His angels, they
hold us up in their hands. We'd stumble and fall all the
time. We'd fall away completely, wouldn't
we? And the Lord himself, and don't
you love Isaiah 46, said, I'll carry you to your head, like
the shepherd and the sheep. Read on. Thou shalt tread upon
the lion and the adder, the young lion, the dragon shalt thou trample
undefeated. Those of you who know, know that
these are descriptions of Satan. of the devil and his demons and
evil and sin and all that. The lion, the adder, the young
lion, the dragon, all through Revelation. Thou shalt trample
under feet. Romans 16, turn there real quickly,
Romans 16. All descriptions of our adversary
who like a roaring lion seeks whom he may devour. And we are
no match for him. None whatsoever. We cannot resist
one of his assaults, can we? Not one. Well, how does he tell
us to resist? In the faith. That's like Michael,
the archangel said, the Lord rebuked that. The Lord had to
say it. The Lord himself resisted him
that way, didn't he, John? He said, it is written, thou
shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. It is written. It is written. But Romans 16, and do you remember
When the Lord said in Luke 10 to those disciples, Luke 9, I
give thee power to tread upon serpents, scorpions, upon all
the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Do you remember Him saying that? Who's He talking to? A bunch
of fishermen. Seventy other men. Nobodies from
nowhere. Doing His bidding. Going out.
Sent by Him. So are we. So are you. Wherever
we go. He sent us. We're His people.
Nothing shall by any means hurt you. Didn't He say that? Until His time. Look at Romans
16. It says in the end, verse 16,
Salute one another with a holy kiss. Why did you read that? Because I did. Because it's written
five times. Is that a command? It's a command.
Five times. There. Okay? Don't worry about it. Believe
the Lord. Now look at verse 20. The God
of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. Real soon. Why? How? Because Christ has
him. On the cross, that's where He
took hold of him and put him under His feet. And he can only
do what the Lord allows him to do. Isn't that good news? He crushed the serpent's head.
Now is the God of this world cast out, He said, when He was
going to the cross. Go back to the text. Psalm 91. Verse 14-16. This is where we'll
close. Whoever it is that loves me,
because He has set His love upon me, or because God set His love
upon me, because He first loved us, we love Him. Therefore, will
I deliver Him. Look at what all God says, I
will do. Therefore, will I deliver Him.
Those that love me, He's going to deliver. Do we? Yes, we do. Not like we should,
but we do. I do not love God as I should,
but I do love Him. There was a time I did not, but
I do now, I really do. He said, I will deliver you.
I will. Read on. I will set him on high. We dwell in the pits, the slime
pits, don't we here? Oh, he said, I'm going to set
you on high. I'm going to lift up the beggar
from the dunghill and set him among princes. I'm going to sit
down with Abraham and Isaac. Oh, my. Heavenly places. Because
he's known my name. I know his name. Don't you? And those that know His name,
Psalm 9, 10 says they put their trust in Him. Jehovah Sidkenu,
Jehovah Ra, Jehovah Shalom, Jehovah our Shepherd, our Peace, our
Banner, our Righteousness, our Prophet, our Priest, our King,
our Lord, Jesus Christ. I know His name. And I trust
in His name. Don't you? By the grace of God,
we trust and believe and fear His name. Verse 15, He shall
call upon me, I will answer Him. Have you ever thought, I've sinned just too much now,
and you call on God, no matter what, you still call on the Lord,
don't you? Don't you? You sin, and you beg Him to forgive
you, and you call on Him, and you think He's not going to answer
you this time. We'll answer. Isaiah said, before
they call, I'll answer. Verse 15, I love you. I'll be
with him in trouble. He's always in trouble. So he's with us. He's always
with us. He's going to be with us because
we're always in trouble. He's got to be with us in trouble.
Like Shadrach, like Hananiah, Mashiach, and Azariah. They were
in that furnace, weren't they? Were they alone? Four men in
the furnace. I will deliver him. I will. He
says it twice. I will deliver him. I will honor
him. Sons of God. Nobody deserves that title less
than I do. But he said, I will honor them.
Those that honor me. I'll honor. Those that honor
my Son, He'll honor. I'm trying. Doing a poor job
of it, aren't we? But we try, and He knows. He
said, I will honor. Verse 16, with long life. How long, Lord? A world without
end. Will I satisfy Him? Nothing here
satisfies Him. The eye is not satisfied with
seeing, the ear with hearing, the mouth with tasting, but someday
we're going to be so satisfied. David said, I'll be satisfied
when I awake with His likeness. He's satisfied. Right now, David
is satisfied. He has no enemy. He has no sin. He has no pain. He's with Mary,
sitting at His feet. He's so satisfied. The woman
at the well, she's so satisfied. And I'll show him, he's going
to know, she's going to know who did this. My salvation. Alright, stand with me. Our Lord and our God, we thank
You, thank You, thank You for the blessed truth. Our shield,
our buckler. Our faith. Christ is our faith. Christ is the truth. He is our
shield. He is our sun. He is our buckler.
He is our salvation. Christ, Lord over heaven and
earth. Lord over us. Lord of our salvation. Jesus
Christ, our Lord. He said, God has given Him power
