The Bible teaches that the law is holy and good, but our sinful flesh is unable to keep it.
The Apostle Paul explains in Romans that while the law is perfect and just, humanity in its sinful state is inherently at odds with it. Our flesh is weak and cannot fulfill the law's requirements, leading to our condemnation. However, God, in His rich mercy, has provided a way through Christ, who fulfilled the law by condemning sin in the flesh. This means that believers are no longer bound by the law of sin and death but now walk according to the Spirit, having received a new nature that desires to obey God's commands.
Romans 8:3-4, Romans 7:14-25
Christ's atonement is sufficient as it fully satisfies the law's demands for righteousness on behalf of His people.
In the sermon, it is emphasized that through His redemptive work, Jesus Christ has made atonement for the sins of His people. He took upon Himself their guilt and imputed His righteousness to their account, thus satisfying the law’s claims. This act of grace assures believers that their debt has been paid in full and that they are now justified before God. The certainty of this atonement is further confirmed by the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, enabling them to live according to God's righteousness, an evidence of their actual salvation.
2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 5:1, Ephesians 2:8-9
Recognizing our new identity in Christ empowers us to live according to God's will and bear fruit in our lives.
The importance of understanding our identity in Christ cannot be overstated. The sermon highlights that believers are a new creation; they are no longer bound by the flesh that was weak and unable to obey the law. Instead, through the work of the Holy Spirit, they have been given a new heart and a desire to fulfill God's law as it is written upon their hearts. This new identity not only reassures Christians of their standing before God but also empowers them to live a life that reflects His glory and grace, as they are equipped to do good works that He has prepared for them.
