Every day is an exciting day because God has something in store. He has a plan and purpose for us.

This past Wednesday, Pastor Kent W. Clark shared with us an experience he had at a recent thrift store conference.

We are not religious; we are Christ centered.

If you would see our Church and meet our people, you would know that we're nothing special. We don't have a whole lot of money, we've done a lot of bad things, but God in His mercy and grace has done something inside of us.

The sermon titled "CHRIST Centered" by Kent Clark emphasizes the importance of being Christ-centered in life and ministry. Clark argues that God has a purposeful plan for each day, inviting believers to live with anticipation and awareness of divine appointments. He shares personal anecdotes, including an encounter with an 80-year-old Korean doctor who praised the Jesus-centered focus of his church, contrasting it with her experiences in other congregations. The sermon is rooted in the belief that the church should prioritize the gospel over denominational identities, echoing the Reformed doctrine of sola Christo, which asserts that Christ alone is the foundation of faith and practice. Ultimately, this message highlights the transformative power of having Christ as the center of one’s life and the communal life of the church.

Key Quotes

“You're not religious. You are Jesus-centered. That's a high compliment.”

“The church is so off base. What got me thrown out of the Baptist church was…I just made this statement at a Bible conference. You've made a God out of the Baptist church.”

“It's Christ. It's the gospel first. God doesn't want us wavering away from that.”

“We've done a lot of bad things, but God in His mercy and grace has done something inside of us.”

What does the Bible say about being Christ-centered?

The Bible emphasizes the importance of being centered on Christ as the foundation of faith and life.

Being Christ-centered means putting Jesus at the center of our lives and recognizing Him as the source of our purpose. Scriptures such as Colossians 3:1-4 encourage believers to set their minds on things above, where Christ is. This highlights how our identity and actions should be rooted in Him, thereby impacting how we interact with the world around us. When a congregation is characterized as Christ-centered, it fosters an environment where His teachings and example are prioritized over mere religious practices.

Moreover, our spiritual lives thrive when we focus on Him because Christ is the embodiment of grace and truth. In John 14:6, Jesus declares Himself to be the way, the truth, and the life, which means that for Christians, all aspects of life must revolve around Him. As seen in the testimony of the Korean doctor in the sermon, congregations that faithfully represent Christ's love and truth can stand out in a world filled with religious traditions that may miss this core focus. Our journey in faith is to continually align ourselves with Christ’s teachings and share His gospel in every aspect of life.

Colossians 3:1-4, John 14:6

How do we know that being Jesus-centered is true?

The witness of believers and scripture confirms that a Jesus-centered faith reflects true Christianity.

Validation of a Jesus-centered life comes from both individual testimonies and scriptural foundations. Personal experiences shared by followers, like the Korean doctor who recognized the church's emphasis on Christ, exemplify how this focus aligns with authentic Christian living. The fruit of a Jesus-centered faith can be seen in transformed lives and a communal dedication to the gospel message as outlined in 1 Corinthians 2:2, where Paul emphasizes preaching Christ crucified as the foundation of his ministry.

Moreover, scripture provides a clear mandate for believers to prioritize Christ above all else. In Matthew 6:33, we are instructed to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, indicating that everything else should flow from a Christ-centered perspective. This leads to a vibrant and active faith where believers seek to embody Christ's teachings in their lives, thus confirming the truth of the doctrine as they witness its impact on themselves and others.

1 Corinthians 2:2, Matthew 6:33

Why is a Christ-centered church important for Christians?

A Christ-centered church nurtures faith and reflects the true essence of the gospel.

A Christ-centered church is vital for cultivating a community that embodies the teachings and love of Jesus. Such a church prioritizes the gospel, ensuring that all activities, teachings, and members are focused on advancing Christ's mission and ministry. This approach not only deepens individual faith but also fosters communal accountability and spiritual growth among its members. As seen in the sermon, the joy of belonging to a church that embodies Christ-centeredness can draw others in, as evidenced by the admiration expressed by the visiting woman who recognized this quality.

Additionally, a Christ-centered church serves as a beacon in a world filled with distractions and competing ideologies that may dilute the essence of the Christian faith. In Ephesians 4:15, Paul encourages believers to speak the truth in love, growing into Him who is the head, Christ. By maintaining a focus on Jesus, churches can help their congregations navigate cultural pressures while remaining anchored in the truth of the gospel. This commitment to Christ ensures that the church fulfills its calling to be the body of Christ on earth, engaged in mission, worship, and discipleship.

Every day to me is an exciting
day because I know God has something in store
every day. He has a plan and purpose every
day for me and you too, but this is the way I live my life. I
can't tell you how many times I get up of a morning and one
of the first things that crossed my mind is, I wonder who I'll
meet today. I wonder who God will put in
my life today. I wonder who I'll get to talk
to today. I wonder what miracle God will
do today. That's a great way to live life,
believing that God is in it and has a plan and purpose. I have got to meet so many people
over these 70 plus years that God has put in my life and it
happened again this week. I met a lady named Sanya Chow
Kim. A Korean lady. She was 80 years old. And she
was talking to a person on the phone, she was in Texas, she
was talking to this man that was telling her he was coming
to a thrift store conference in Pontiac, Michigan. And she
said something like, Pontiac, Michigan? That was where my first job was. I worked at Pontiac General. She's a doctor. 45 years ago. She began to tell
me a little bit about her life and she said, you know, I've
been to just about every nation on the top of this earth in some
kind of ministry way. And she said this, what a high
compliment this is to us. You're not religious. She said,
you are Jesus-centered. That's a high compliment. Especially
if she had only heard about us one time. She said, I can't believe,
I have never seen, I've been a Christian all these years,
and I have, she said, I have never seen anything like what's
going on at Grace Centers. The big problem in my 50-some
years of ministry is I couldn't find a Jesus-centered congregation. I mean, that's all they preach. They say, well, Pastor, you preach
the same thing all the time. I know. And a little old 80-year-old
Korean doctor from Texas recognized it. And she'll never know till
we get to heaven what a blessing that was. The church is so off base. What got me thrown out of the
Baptist church, I just made this statement at a Bible conference.
You've made a God out of the Baptist church. You've got the
cart before the horse. It's Christ. It's the gospel
first. God doesn't want us wavering
away from that. I see some of the things that
some of you are putting on Facebook, and I thank God for what you're
putting on there. How awesome it is that you too
are Christ-centered and putting it out there. If you would see
our church and meet our people, you would know we're nothing
special. We don't have a whole lot of money. We've done a lot
of bad things, but God in His mercy and grace
has done something inside of us. Amen.
