What does the Bible say about the command of the gospel?

The Bible commands believers to preach the gospel to all creatures, emphasizing the centrality of Christ in salvation.

The command of the gospel is deeply rooted in Scripture, particularly seen in the directive from Jesus to go into all the world and preach the gospel. Joshua 3:1-4 illustrates how God's authority calls His people to action. This command isn't merely a suggestion; it's a divine directive meant to guide believers as they proclaim the message of salvation through Christ. God purposely chooses to save His people through the preaching of the gospel, ensuring that there is no other avenue for salvation apart from Christ and His finished work.

Matthew 28:19-20, Joshua 3:1-4, 1 Corinthians 1:21

How do we know election is unto salvation?

Election is unto salvation as God chose His people before the foundation of the world, which ensures that none of them will be lost.

Election is a foundational doctrine in Reformed theology, grounded in Scripture. In 2 Thessalonians 2:13, Paul thanks God for choosing believers unto salvation, which affirms that election is not merely a theoretical concept but a purposeful act of God that results in real salvation. This means that God's choosing of His people takes place before the foundation of the world and is tied to the work of Christ in securing their salvation. Romans 8:28-30 further illustrates how those whom God predestined are also called, justified, and eventually glorified, highlighting the assurance of salvation for the elect.

2 Thessalonians 2:13, Romans 8:28-30

Why is repentance important for Christians?

Repentance is vital for Christians as it signifies a turning away from sin and a returning to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Repentance is an integral part of the Christian faith, reflecting the transformative work of grace in a believer's life. In the command presented in Joshua 3, we see that upon witnessing the Ark of the Covenant, God's people were instructed to move from their place and follow it. This symbolizes the necessity of repentance—turning from one's own ways and actively pursuing Christ. The goodness of God leads to repentance (Romans 2:4), exemplifying how true repentance is a work of the Holy Spirit that draws individuals to acknowledge their sinfulness and their need for salvation in Christ. Thus, repentance is not only a one-time act but an ongoing posture in the life of a believer as they continually turn to Christ.

Romans 2:4, Joshua 3:1-4

How does the gospel reveal the righteousness of God?

The gospel reveals God’s righteousness as it is centered on the person and work of Jesus Christ.

The righteousness of God is revealed through the gospel as articulated in Romans 1:16-17. The apostle Paul emphasizes that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation, wherein the righteousness of God is unveiled from faith to faith. This means that it is through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ that God's righteous standards are fulfilled. The gospel does not present a righteousness based on works but rather a righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ, demonstrating both God's justice and mercy. As believers, we understand that through Christ’s obedience and sacrifice, we are credited with His righteousness, which is the foundation of our justification before God.

Romans 1:16-17, Galatians 2:16

What is the significance of seeing Christ in the gospel?

Seeing Christ in the gospel is essential for true faith and understanding salvation.

To see Christ in the gospel is to comprehend the fullness of who He is and what He has accomplished for sinners. In the sermon, the preacher emphasizes that true sight of Christ leads to a deep, personal response—repentance and faith. This sight is not a mere physical observation but a spiritual awakening given by God that reveals Christ's majesty, deity, and work on behalf of His people. As stated in Ephesians 1:18-19, the eyes of the heart must be enlightened to know the significance of Christ’s sacrifice. When believers truly see Christ, they understand their need for Him, leading to a humble response of repentance and a life directed towards Him. This transformational view solidifies the believer's faith as they recognize that salvation is only found in Christ alone.

Thank you, brother. It's my pleasure
and delight to be here with you this evening. And I wanted to
express my appreciation and thanks to this congregation for your
faithful support and your prayers for us. And my dad and my mother
send their hellos. He's not traveling much anymore.
Like I said, he's been down there 47 years, and the Lord has blessed
the work there. Evidently, he has some people
there. And he's still calling out his people. We're so thankful
to be used in his work, in this work that he's given us. And I love to sing that song
we sang, I love to tell the story. That's what we're called to do.
to speak of the Lord Jesus Christ, tell the story of what He's done
for sinners such as I. And I just wanted to take the
opportunity to express my appreciation before we look into God's Word. I thank you. I thank the Lord
for you, and I appreciate your prayers. Tonight, I want to speak from
Joshua chapter 3. Joshua chapter 3. We're commanded to go into the
world and preach the gospel to every creature. And this is not
a tiresome work. Apostle Paul said, for me to
write the same thing, he said, rejoice in the Lord always. For
me to write the same things to you, it's not grievous. And for
you, it is safe. It is safe. It is good to be
grounded in the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the
gospel. There is no other message. There is no other salvation.
There's no other means by where God calls his people. He calls
them by the preaching of his gospel, the preaching, the message
of Jesus Christ and what he has done, who he is and what he has
done. God has chosen through the foolishness of preaching
to save them that believe. So it's not a tiresome thing.
It's not a tiresome thing. And, you know, we hear, I know
what you're, this is a great comfort to me. And I know it
is for you too, brother, and for you, brother, those that
preach. You're not tired of hearing it,
and believe me, the men that are sin of God, they're not tired
of saying it either. We rejoice in this message just
as much as you do. We get a blessing first. We get
a blessing of it. And so, I'm not tired. I was
telling somebody, my brother back there, I said,
you're going to hear the same message again. I'm not worried
about it. It's better the second time. Well, we only have one message,
don't we? It's where we preach and the
word, the message is all Christ. Christ is all in all. In Joshua chapter 3, I'm going
to read the first four verses. There's so much in this chapter,
but I'm going to stay with these first four verses. And I want
us to consider the command of the gospel. The command of the
gospel. That's the title of the message. And Joshua rose early in the
morning, and they were moved from Shittim and came to Jordan,
he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they
passed over. And it came to pass after three
days that the officers went through the host, And they commanded
the people, saying, When you see the ark of the covenant of
the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then
you shall remove from your place and go after it." It's a very
simple outline. It's a very simple outline. But
I like the simple outlines. They stick. It's the command
of the gospel, and the first thing I want us to consider.
in this passage is the depravity of man, the inability of man. You see, God had purpose to give
the land to his people. God had purpose to give this
promised land to the children of Israel. That's the purpose
of God. And God has purpose to give his people, in Christ Jesus,
the kingdom. He has purposed before the foundation
of the world to give his people the kingdom. We received the
kingdom. It was given to us when we were
given to Christ. We were given to Christ before
the foundation of the world and he was given to us. And he is
the king. And God has purposed that every
one of his children are going to be with him in glory. Not
one shall be lost. And so he chose his people before
the foundation of the world. But election is not salvation. Election is unto salvation. We're
bound to give thanks to God for you, brethren, beloved of the
Lord, because God has chosen you, I think it says, unto salvation. In Thessalonians, chapter 2,
verse 13. Give thanks for you. God has
chosen you. But this election is unto salvation. It's not salvation in itself.
God must bring about the salvation of his people by the doing and
dying of the Lord Jesus Christ. But God purposed these children
of Israel to be in Canaan. God purposed them to be there.
But the very first thing the Lord is showing, I believe we
see here in this passage and figure, The first thing the Lord
is showing his people is their inability. You see, they come
to the river Jordan, they're at the banks of the river Jordan,
but unable to cross. Unable to cross. And that is
we by nature. God has purposed to give us the
kingdom, but we in ourselves, we in our own nature, we cannot
come to God. We are in Adam, we all die. In Adam, we all died. Unable
to come to God. No man can come to the Father. No man can come to me except
the Father which sent me to draw him. Not only are we unable because
of our spiritual deadness, but unwilling. You will not come
to me that you may have eternal life, the Lord said. And here's
the thing. God is going to make it clear.
to his people that there is no salvation. There's no salvation
apart from the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other name given
among men whereby me must be saved. The Lord's going to make
it clear that it's not a collaboration. It's not in man, but it's only
in the Lord Jesus Christ. You see, it says here after three
days. After three days. that every
time you see three days, it's very significant. Three days,
that's the day of the resurrection. That's the day when God, when
the Lord caused the earth to come up from the water. And this
is the day when the Lord Jesus Christ rose from the grave. And
it's that time when the Lord Jesus Christ came up from the
grave that we're saved. If all He did was come and die,
There is no salvation. If all he did was come and live,
there is no salvation. If all he did was come and live
and die, there is no salvation. But it is when the Lord Jesus
Christ came forth from the grave, having satisfied God's justice,
having satisfied the demands of the law against His people,
we were risen with Christ. Look at what it says here in
Ephesians chapter 2. This is a text we all have read. And like I said, we don't get
tired of reading it. I was watching the barn being built over there
in North Carolina, and it reminded me of this illustration. And it's a good illustration.
You'll remember it whenever you're building a barn or when you're
building something. And if you want something to stay where
it's at, you put a nail in it. But if you want it to be even
more sure, you put two nails in it. And if you're not sure
of that, you put three nails in it. Well, this is what we're
doing when we look at the gospel and we're getting grounded and
settled and firm. This is the gospel. Don't be
moved from this gospel. It says here in Ephesians chapter
2, I'm going to read verse 1 and purposely jump over the italicized
wording there. who were dead in trespasses and
sins, wherein in times past ye walked according to the course
of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air,
the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience,
among whom also we all had our conversations in time past, in
the lust of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and
the mind, and were by nature the children of wrath, even as
others. But God, who is rich in mercy,
for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were
dead in sin, hath quickened us together with Christ." We were
saved when he was raised from the dead. We were saved. By grace are you saved. Where
is your faith in that verse? Your faith is not mentioned at
all in that verse. It's not our faith that saves
us. It's the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ. It's his faithfulness. It's his obedience. We're quickened
together with Christ. And in that text, if you notice
there as we're reading in Joshua chapter 3, the children of Israel
and Joshua came and camped together at the other site for three days.
But it wasn't until that third day that they all crossed. They all crossed together. In
other words, what I'm saying, I'm trying to point out, is that
when the Lord Jesus Christ lived in this world and established
righteousness as a man, and when he went to the cross and paid
the debt for his people, we're all saved. It's finished. When the Lord Jesus Christ cried,
it is finished. He satisfied God. Now, how is
God purposed? Now, this is what God has done.
This is what God has done, in fact, really before the foundation
of the world. He's the Lamb slain from the
foundation of the world. You know He was slain for sin
before the foundation of the world? That's the only reason
Islam was slain before the foundation of the world. He was slain for
the sin of his people before the foundation of the world,
though his people weren't even in existence. What I'm saying is, in the mind
and purpose of God, from all eternity, his people in Christ
are safe. Are safe. Saved. Well, this is what happened in
the Council of Grace. The covenant of grace. That's what happened. God's done
it. And we don't proclaim adieu. We proclaim done. It's done. It's finished. Well, how does
the Lord let His people know? How does He manifest this? How does He manifest this purpose
of His concerning the salvation of His people? Well, it says
here in the text, it says that after three days, it came to
pass after three days that the officers went through the host
and they commanded the people. You know where I'm going with
here? The officers went through the host and they commanded the
people. God has purposed to save his
people by the preaching of the gospel, it says in 1 Corinthians
chapter 1 and verse 20, 21. He has purpose to save, and it's
a commandment. God commands all men everywhere
to repent. This gospel message is not an
invitation. It's not a suggestion. The king
is speaking to his people. The one who has authority is
speaking to his people. And he commands his people everywhere
to believe. That is a commandment of God.
And the officers, notice it was not Joshua himself, but it was
the officers. The officers went through the
camp. God has purposed to save his
people. You know, in Romans chapter 10, this text is so misquoted
by the religious world, and you've heard them, They act like they
are going to twist God's arm. They say here in Romans chapter
10 verse 13, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord
shall be saved. And they have this little recipe.
Repeat after me and say these words. As if they were going
to twist the Lord's arm behind his back and say, well, you've
repeated the words, have you not? Are you saying that he lied? What a blasphemy. He's sovereign. He'll save whom
He will. He'll have mercy on whom He will.
What this text is teaching is that all those that call upon
the name of the Lord is because God already called them. Those that call on the name of
the Lord, the Lord has already worked in their heart. Has already
taught them. Whosoever shall call on the name
of the Lord shall be saved. He shall be saved on that final
day. in that day of judgment, he shall
be saved because he was saved before the foundation of the
world and he's being saved now. He shall be saved. Whosoever
shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Well, how
shall they call on him of whom they've not believed? And how
shall they believe on him whom they've not heard? And how shall
they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach except
they be sent? As it is written, how beautiful
are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace and bring
glad tidings of good things." This is a golden chain that can't
be broken. God has purposed to save His
people by the foolishness of preaching. But He also has to
send man out to preach the gospel. If He doesn't send it, how thankful
we are. I know you're thankful. that
the Lord has given you a pastor here in Ashland, Kentucky. Not
everywhere across the United States, not everywhere in Mexico,
do you have this blessing that the Lord has given you to sit
and listen to the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. And the Lord
doesn't use anything else to save His people. He doesn't use
a lie. He doesn't use a lie. He uses
the truth. Having heard the word of truth,
it says in Ephesians 1.13, the gospel of your salvation. But
it's the word of truth. It's not a lie. They went forth. These officers
went forth. Well, where did they get their
authority? They went and commanded the people.
Who gave them that authority? You think they just woke up that
morning and said, I think I'm just going to go tell them what
to do? No. These officers got their
authority the same place we get our authority. Or should I say
from the same one we get our authority? From Joshua. The Lord
Jesus Christ. He said, all authority, all power
is given to me in heaven and earth. Go, preach the gospel. Preach this message. Preach the
gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized
shall be saved. He that believeth not shall be
condemned. From the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
Our authority does not come from a religious board. Our authority doesn't even come
from the church. Our authority comes from the
Lord Jesus Christ himself. Our authority is thus saith the
Lord. Our authority doesn't come from
a Vatican or some kind of religious council. It doesn't come from
some council. The big leagues. Our authority
is right here. The Lord Jesus Christ is his
word. Thus saith the Lord." Well, what
was their message? I told you this was a simple
outline. What was their message? It says here, going back to our
text in Joshua chapter 3, it said, They commanded the people,
saying, When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your
God, when you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your
God, this ark, represents the Lord Jesus Christ. He is. He is the art. He is everything
that art spoke of. He is the fulfillment of that
type. That art, you know, was made of wood, incorruptible wood,
which speaks of his humanity. That art was covered with pure
gold, which speaks of his deity. In that art was the Ten Commandments,
the law of God. which the Lord Jesus Christ had
in His heart and kept, fulfilled every jot and tittle of the law.
On that ark was the mercy seat where the cherubims met face
to face. And God said, that's the place
I'll meet with you. And Him, in the Lord Jesus Christ,
is a place where God will meet with you. And we don't want to
meet with God anywhere else but in the Lord Jesus Christ. You
don't want to have anything to do with God outside the Lord
Jesus Christ. He's a holy, holy, holy, just
God consuming fire. You don't want to have anything
to do with God outside the Lord Jesus Christ. Well, this is what
we pray. This is what, in your prayer
at the beginning, we want to see the Lord Jesus Christ. We want to see the Lord Jesus
Christ. To see Him. To see Him for who He is. To
see Him in His beauty. To see Him for who He is and
what He has done. This is a miracle of God. But we must see Him. We must see Him in His deity.
We must see Him in His humanity. We pray, Lord, open the eyes
of the blind. Open the eyes of the blind. We
know we speak to people who have no interest in the Lord Jesus
Christ. You remember the prophet told, go preach to those bones.
They're dead bones. They're dry bones. They've been
dead and dry for a long time. There's no moisture in them.
There's no hint of life in them. But the Lord said, go preach
to those bones. He said, can these bones live? Lord, you know. If they're going to live, you're
going to have to give them life. But he said, you preach to them.
And tell them what God's going to do. He said, oh, dry bones,
I'm going to make sinew come upon you. I'm going to make muscles
come upon you. And then they began to rattle. And then he spoke to the wind
and said, oh, wind, come and blow. These bones, they live. And we pray, Lord, send your
Holy Spirit that these dry bones will live, that these blind eyes
will see, that these deaf ears will hear, that these lame may
be able to walk. Our message is the person of
the Lord Jesus Christ. We preach Christ Jesus and Him
crucified. God is revealed only in the Lord
Jesus Christ. God is revealed only in the Lord
Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul said, speaking
to the Corinthians, he's a philosopher. And he could have spoken philosophy.
He could have really held his own with the wise men of that
day. He was taught at the feet of
Gamaliel. But he said to the Corinthians, when I came to you,
I came not with enticing words, with big words. I determined
to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Who He is? Jesus. I shall call
His name Jesus. Emmanuel, God with us. because
he will save his people from their sins. That's what he does.
He's the savior of sinners. Christ. He is the prophet. The prophet who reveals God.
No one can know God apart from knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ said, He
that has seen me has seen the Father. No man can know God apart
from knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. Seeing him is seeing God who
is invisible. And when all His people are around
the throne on that last day, and all we look upon Him, we
look upon God, you know who we're going to see? The Lord Jesus
Christ. That's who we're going to see.
There's no other God but Him. We preach in His authority. He's the prophet. He's the priest. He's the priest who's offered
that sacrifice. to put away the sins of his people.
He was offered that sacrifice. He offered the sacrifice of his
own body. His perfect humanity, his blood
was offered upon the altar of his deity. If it was just a man
that died, even if it was a perfect man, he could not save anyone. Even if he was a perfect man.
But it's God. An angel couldn't save us. If
he was just God, he couldn't die. He couldn't pay the debt. But he's the God man. He, as
the Christ, he's the prophet, priest, and king who has offered
the sacrifice of his humanity on the altar of his deity. That's
what gives value to that sacrifice. It's the blood of God. The blood
of God, the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, takes away the
sin of the world. And He is the King, Jesus Christ,
the Prophet, Priest, and King. So we preach who He is. We preach
Jesus Christ, who is the Word, and He is the Gospel of our salvation. We preach the Gospel of the Lord
Jesus Christ because it is the power of God and the salvation. I'm on this point right here
when you see the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God. That's
the point I'm on. You must see the Ark of the Covenant
of the Lord your God. You must see the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Apostle Paul said, I'm not ashamed to preach the gospel.
I'm not ashamed of the gospel, says in Romans chapter 1 and
verse 16. The Apostle Paul said, I'm not
ashamed of the gospel. We're not ashamed of the Gospel.
You must see Him. You must see the Gospel. You
must see the Lord Jesus Christ. I'm not ashamed of the Gospel
of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation. Jesus
Christ is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believe
it. To the Jew first and also to
the Greek. For therein, that is in Christ Jesus and His person
and His work, therein is the righteousness of God revealed. Nowhere else is the righteousness
of God revealed. Therein, in the personal work
of the Lord Jesus Christ, as it is revealed from faith to
faith. The righteousness of God is revealed
from faith to faith. You know what that means? From
faith to faith. I like the way it says in Spanish.
Makes it a little more clear to me, but I'll try to tell you
what a blessing I got from it in Spanish. From faith. The righteousness of God is revealed
in the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ in order for you
to have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The righteousness of
God is revealed in the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ in order
for you to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. We're saved by
the faith of Jesus Christ, but no one is saved apart from believing
in the Lord Jesus Christ. Let's go over to Galatians chapter
2 and it says it in those words. Galatians chapter 2 and verse
16. says, knowing that a man is not
justified, made just before God by the works of the law, but
by the faith of Jesus Christ. He, as a man, believed God when
God turned his back on him, when he was made sin for us who knew
no sin. You cannot understand that, brother.
He was made sin, who knew no sin, and God turned his back
on God. And yet, he as a man believed
God. You know, when something goes
wrong with us, we start wondering, why me? Our faith is like a colander. It's full of holes. We believe
God, but we must also confess, Lord, Help my unbelief. Lord,
I believe. Help my unbelief. We believe,
but we have doubts and fears and anxiety. What is that but
another name for unbelief? Unbelief. We cannot be saved
by our faith. Our faith cannot satisfy God. Without faith, you cannot please
God. But what faith is it? It's the faith of the Lord Jesus
Christ. Now, we have believed in Jesus Christ to be saved by
the faith of Jesus Christ. That's what it says here in verse
16. Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the
law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we believe in Jesus
Christ that we might be justified by the faith of Christ and not
by the works of the law. For by the works of the law shall
no man be justified. No man shall be saved. Well,
you must see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, Jehovah. You must see Him. Now, it's not
talking about seeing Him with the carnal eye. In Mexico, 97% is Roman Catholic. And you know,
all men are idolaters. It just so happens in Roman Catholicism,
they're visually. icons and statues and they have
these little niches, they have these little recessed areas in
the wall where they've got their saints and things like that. But you know, we're not talking
about seeing some poor, pathetic man on a cross. Our Lord Jesus
Christ is not poor or pathetic. The Lord Jesus Christ is the
sovereign Lord. He's victorious over death and
hell and sin and the grave. He's victorious. Yes, He went
to the cross. Yes, He was shamefully despised
and rejected of man. We didn't esteem Him, but God
was doing that. God was satisfying Himself. When
God was satisfied, He raised Him up and set Him on the throne.
Now you must see him. I must see the Lord Jesus Christ.
But it's not talking about seeing him with this carnal eye. Many
men saw the Lord Jesus Christ in person hanging from the cross
and ridiculed and mocked him and said, if thou be the Christ,
come down from the cross and we'll believe you. They saw him. They saw his vision was more
marred than any man. They spat on him. insulted. They saw him, but it didn't know. They said, we will not have this
man rule over us. We have no king but Caesar. Many
of those men who were at that time and saw the Lord Jesus Christ
with their eyes saw no beauty in him that they should desire.
Who later, on the day of Pentecost when the apostle Peter was preaching
In the power of the Holy Spirit, they saw. They saw with the ear. They saw and they said, men and
brethren, what shall we do? We've crucified the Lord. They
saw then what they could not see forty days earlier. They saw then that that one is
the Christ. what I'm talking about. We must
see Him with the eyes that God gives. Our Lord said to His disciples,
Whom do men say that I, the Son of Man am? And some say you're
one of the prophets. John the Baptist or one of the
prophets. I'm paraphrasing here, but it's
in Matthew chapter 16. And He said, Who do you say that? And Peter said, Thou art the
Christ. He's looking at a man. He said,
Thou art the Christ. the Son of the Living God. And
the Lord said, Blessed are thou, Sarmon by Jonah, for flesh and
blood have not revealed this to you, but my Father which is
in heaven. On that same day when the Lord was crucified, there
were two thieves there hanging on a cross. And they were both
reviling the Lord Jesus Christ. And then the Lord worked a work
of grace in the heart of one, and he saw him as Lord. He saw
him that he didn't see before. We must see him. A man by the
name of Ananias came to Saul of Tarsus after the Lord appeared
to him on the road to Damascus and said, Brother Saul, receive
thy sight. In the same hour I looked upon
him and he said, The God of our fathers has chosen thee that
thou shouldest know his will and see that just one. God has
chosen you that you will know his will His purpose, salvation
in Christ Jesus. And you see the Lord Jesus Christ,
the just one. And should us hear the voice
of His mouth. Well, our Lord said this, if
I, if I be lifted up, I'll draw all men to myself. I'll draw
all His people. He'll draw all His people to
Himself. So you must see Him. And so, the officers come through
the camp. I won't have to hurry. The officers
come through the camp and they say, here's the command, when
you see the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God, two things
will happen. And this is the same thing that
will happen today when men in the preaching of the gospel see,
by the grace of God, who Christ Jesus is. Two things. They'll
leave where they're at and they'll go after it. It's talking about
repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. When
you see the Lord Jesus Christ, that's when you're going to repent.
A man can look inside and be introspective and he can agree
that he's a rotten person. That's not repentance. Repentance
towards God comes by the grace of God. Know ye not that the
goodness of God leads you to repentance? It's the gospel of
the Lord Jesus Christ. The same gospel that God uses
to produce faith, give faith, is the same gospel. When the
Holy Spirit comes, He convinces His people of sin, because they
have not believed in Me. Of righteousness and of justice.
Judgement. We must see Him. You must remove
from where you're placed, remove from your place. Repentance towards
God. It does not come from looking
inside. That's just a recipe for depression. Anybody that looks inside, they
can agree that they're bad. And you can agree with them.
You just have a pity party. But that is not repentance towards
God. Repentance. No one is repentant
toward God that has not come to the Lord Jesus Christ. If
you've repented, then you've come. Those things are inseparable. Repentance toward God and faith
in the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance does not come by threat
of doom. They could stand there and look
at Jordan. And they could look at Jordan. Look at Jordan. You
could look at death. And you could look at death.
And that ain't going to cause repentance. You could look at hell. And you
could look at hell. That ain't going to cause repentance. But
look at the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. And you repent.
Look at the Lord Jesus Christ. I had an illustration, it just
went away. It don't ever happen to you that way. Here's an example of this,
when you see the Lord Jesus Christ. You will repent towards God and
come to the Lord Jesus Christ. We just read in the text where
in Romans chapter 1, I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,
for in it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that
believeth, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For therein
is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith, that it
is written that just shall live by faith. A person may believe
that he is saved by his faith. He's not saved. But when he sees
the Lord Jesus Christ, when he sees his faithfulness, and God
will convict him of his unfaithfulness, then he'll come to the Lord Jesus
Christ. When he sees the Lord Jesus Christ in the finished
work, that's when he will turn from his dead works. Turn to
the living God. But as long as the man doesn't
see the Lord Jesus Christ and His beauty and His finished work,
then he's going to rest in something that he's done, or some kind
of collaboration, some kind of part that he might have. But
when you see the Lord Jesus Christ and see His person, what God
requires, when you look at Christ on the cross and you see what
God requires of sinners, then you know it's nothing of man.
But God must satisfy Himself. And you repent of your thoughts
of coming before God and having something to do with your salvation,
your will, or your baptism, or your anything. And trust only
in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. But until you see
the Lord Jesus Christ and His fulfillment down on the cross,
then a person's going to think that, well, I made my decision. Well, they haven't seen the Lord
Jesus Christ. As long as a man is trusted in
his work, he hasn't seen the Lord Jesus Christ. When the Lord
shows him his son in the light of the gospel of the Lord Jesus
Christ, then we see who we are. Then we come to him, we see his
beauty. Thou, people, shalt be willing
in the day of thy power, in the beauty of holiness. Thou hast
to, I'm not quoting it right, but you know what the text. When
people see His beauty, when people see His finished work, all that
my soul needs, all that my soul... God requires all that my soul
needs is in Him. I must have Him. And so, there's
the command. When you see the Lord Jesus Christ.
And you know, this is not something that is an isolated past. And
this is not something that is isolated in the past. We pray
we want to see the Lord Jesus Christ tonight. Because we come
to Him continually. To whom coming? And as we see
Him, we come to Him. Unless we see Him, we cannot
come to Him. So when you see the Lord Jesus
Christ, you repent. You always have need of repentance.
You always have need to come to the Lord Jesus Christ. And
that's the command of the Gospel. You know, that's the continual
coming. The Scripture says, to whom coming?
To whom coming? Not to whom you came. To whom
coming? It's a continual coming to the
Lord Jesus Christ. Putting your eyes on the Lord
Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. As you
have received the Lord Jesus Christ, so walk in Him. Keep
coming. Keep coming. Thank you, brother. One day, one day, we keep coming
and one day the Lord Jesus Christ is going to call us home and
we'll be there. We keep coming, we keep looking to Him. We keep
waiting for His coming. One day He's coming and we will
open our eyes and see Him. May the Lord bless you. Thank
you for your prayers and support.
