I'd like to begin the message
this morning by reading one verse of scripture in 1 Peter chapter
3. 1 Peter chapter 3 verse 15. But sanctify the Lord God in
your hearts. How do we do that? By bowing
to Him, worshiping Him, joining the psalmist and saying not unto
us, not unto us, we deflect all honor, all glory from ourselves
and give all our glory to God. Sanctify the Lord God in your
hearts. Lift Him up highly. And be ready
always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason, a
reason of the hope, singular, the hope that is in you with
meekness and fear. That's what I want to talk to
you about this morning, about our hope. That's the title of
my message. The Lord taught when he was on
earth that there will always be many. He taught this on more
than one occasion. There will always be many whose
hope of heaven will prove to be groundless. I think some of
the most frightening, alarming words in
scripture are those our Lord spoke in Matthew chapter 7. He
said in verse 21, not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord. In our day, most people think
that's all that's necessary to be a Christian, except the Lord. Make a decision for Jesus. And
he says, no, no, not everyone that says unto me, Lord, Lord,
shall enter into the kingdom of heaven. But he that doeth
the will of my Father which is in heaven." In another place,
John 8, I think it is, he said, and this is the will of God that
you believe on him whom God did send. Many will say to me in
that day, can you imagine this? How frightful, how terrible.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied
in thy name? And in thy name have cast out
devils. And in thy name done many wonderful
works. And then, then, at the very judgment
seat of God, then will I profess unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me ye that work iniquity. We're not going to camp out there.
No, we're going to talk about our hope, the hope of a believer.
The Word of God tells us just as certainly and just as truly
that there is such a thing as a real hope. a real hope, a sure
hope. And believers, the book of God
teaches, they know some things. They know some things. First
and foremost is this, Paul said to Timothy, When he sat in that
prison cell, in that dungeon, soon to be executed, he said,
Timothy, I'm not ashamed. I'm not ashamed. I don't have
any regrets in my service of the Lord Jesus Christ. I'm ready
to be offered. My departure's at hand, and I
welcome it. And he said in chapter 1, verse
12, I know whom, there it is, I know whom I have believed. That's the rock. that a believer
is built on. That's the rock Jesus Christ
said on whom he would build his church. And what would be the
outcome of that? What about the church that's
built upon Jesus Christ? He said the gates of hell can't
prevail against that. Nothing can overcome that. Nothing
can destroy God's church. That's where salvation is. We
can't emphasize that enough. We can't be reminded of that
enough. Paul said, I know whom, highlight
whom, circle whom, underline whom. And of course, he's speaking
of the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation, as you've heard over
and over again, it's not in what you know. It's not in what you
know, it's who you know. Before Paul's conversion, he
knew a lot of whatsits. I mean, he was just loaded down
with this knowledge of things. He could talk for hours. I'm
sure he could. Paul was knowledgeable. He says
so in various places, especially Philippians chapter 3 about the
traditions of the fathers. Paul could sit down and probably
keep you up all night talking about the law. Oh, not only the
law God himself gave, but the law that the Pharisees added
on to. He could talk about all the ceremonies
in the temple. He could tell you about all those
sacrifices. And he could talk about the traditions
of his fathers. Oh, how he loved the tradition,
the religious tradition of his fathers. But, with all that knowledge,
with all that learning about what and things, Paul didn't
know God. He didn't know God. He could
talk about the law of God, the temple of God, the sacrifices
of God, but he didn't know God. He didn't have a clue who God
was. He couldn't. It was impossible
for Paul to know God. Now he would argue with you,
he would pull his sword out if you told him that to his face.
But the truth is he couldn't know God because he didn't know
the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. It's impossible for a
man to know God and I know we live in a political correct society,
man. Up to here with that stuff. My, so they put folks in a straitjacket. Everything you think, say or
do. You've offended somebody. You're doing this or that. Well,
that's okay. Now, I know it's fashionable
to say, well, you know, we might not see eye to eye, but I believe
Mormons are saved. They don't believe Jesus Christ
is the Son of God, neither do Jehovah's Witnesses. But I believe
you know, if they're sincere, if they're sincere, Saul of Tarsus
was sincere. Man, when he headed to Damascus
with that saddlebag full of warrants to arrest God's people, he was
sincere as he could be. Oh no, no, no one can know God
except through the Lord Jesus Christ. That's what he said himself. Luke chapter 10, verse 22. He
said, all things are delivered to me of my Father, And no man
knoweth who the Son is but the Father, and who the Father is
but the Son, and He to whom the Son will reveal Him. To know
Christ, I mean to really know Christ in the sense that we sang
about it a minute ago. I know whom I have believed.
I know, I'm persuaded that He's able to keep that. I trust the
ever-living One. His wounds for me shall please.
John 14, 6 again our Lord said, Jesus said unto them, I am the
way and I'm the truth and the life. No man, no man cometh unto
the Father but by me. And that includes Saul of Tarsus.
That includes every man born of Adam. But after that Jesus
Christ revealed himself to Paul, that's how we come to know him.
Paul said, oh, but when it pleased God. How did you become a Christian,
Paul? Did you just wake up one day
and see the light? No, no, no. When it pleased God. Oh, aren't you glad that it pleased
God to reveal His Son to you and in you? Oh, when God did
that for Saul of Tarsus, oh, what a change took place. Paul
said, if any man be in Christ, he's a new creature. He's a new
creation. There is something in him that's
not a product of this world. It's from above. He's been born
again, created anew by the Holy Spirit of God. That's what our
Lord told Nicodemus, and Nicodemus scratched his head and said,
what are you talking about? What are you talking? Didn't
have a clue, did he? Oh, but from that day forward,
when Paul was given faith to behold Jesus Christ as the Lamb
of God, it was no longer what, was it? It was who. I mean, every
time he opened his mouth after that, it was who. Take him to
Corinth and show him all their philosophy. and all their teachings,
and all their speculation, and all their learning. And he would
say, poof, I don't give a flip about that. I'm determined to
know nothing among you save Jesus Christ and him crucified. Take
him and show him the temple of Diana in Ephesus. And everyone
was saying, oh, greatest Diana of the Ephesians. And Paul said,
Jesus Christ is the head of the church. has been put by God Almighty
under His feet. I don't want to hear nothing
except Christ Jesus. Yes, believers know who Jesus
Christ is. They know Jesus Christ. They
know the same way that Paul came to know, by Christ revealing
Himself to them. Again, John 17, verse 3. And this is life eternal, that
they might know Thee, the only true God, But he didn't stop
there, did he? And Jesus Christ. No man comes
to God except by Jesus Christ. No man knows God that doesn't
know Jesus Christ. God deals with men through the
Lord Jesus Christ. This is my beloved son, hear
ye him, that they might know thee the only true God. And Jesus
Christ, whom thou didst send. John chapter 5 verse, or first
John rather, chapter 5 verse 13. These things, John says,
have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son
of God. The reason I've written this
epistle to you that are believers, that you have tasted that the
Lord is gracious, to you who truly know God, I want you to
know, John said, that you may, that ye may know that you have
eternal life. I want you to know that. You
know God. I want you to know that you know
God. You know Christ. I want you to
know that you know Christ. I want you to have the blessed,
sweet assurance that you are His. And He is yours. And nothing can separate that.
Nothing can change that. You have eternal life. I want
you to know that. and that you may believe. Just
keep believing. You can do no better than that.
You can find no better rest than that. Just believe on the name
of the Son of God. Chapter, or rather verse 20 of
that same chapter, chapter 5 of 1 John. And we know, we know,
he sounds sure. Well, is he being presumptuous? No. No, not at all. It's not
presumption. If God grants you faith to believe
on the Son of God, it's not presumption to say, I know whom I have believed. It honors God. It seems to be
fashionable in some corners to always be talking about doubt.
Oh, I just don't know. I'm just not sure. And they seem
to think that's a sign of spirituality. Oh, no. I would rather be where
John is. and take my place with Him and
say, we know that the Son of God has come and has given us
an understanding. An understanding for what? To
know all mysteries? To understand all prophecy? Oh
no, no, no. Has given us an understanding
that we may know Him. That is true. And we are in Him
that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true
God and eternal life. Knowing Christ, that's the root,
faith in Him. Oh, but here's the sweet flower,
here's the fruit, the persuasion that He is able. He's able to
keep that which I've committed unto Him against that day. And
look at the commentaries, what they have to say on that verse,
and some will say, well Paul was talking about his ministry,
his reputation, his life, heaven. Well, whatever he was talking
about, if he was talking about now, We're talking about eternity. He said, I'm persuaded, I'm convinced,
I don't have any doubts about this, that Jesus Christ, the
mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace, and my Savior,
He's able to keep that which I've committed unto Him against
that day. Man, that's a practical benefit,
isn't it? That is shoe-leather theology,
isn't it? That'll comfort you. Let's look
at three or four places in Scripture, and we'll be brief. about our
hope. The first is in 2 Thessalonians
chapter 2. 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. And what we read here about our
hope is that it's a good hope. It's a good hope. Verses 16 and 17. Against the
backdrop of the apostasy that the apostle
has spoken about in the previous verses. He turns from that darkness
and he says, oh, but there is an election. There is an election. We're bound to give thanks to
God for you, brethren, because God from the beginning has chosen
you to salvation. And then in verse 16, he says,
now our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God, even our Father, which
has loved us and has given us everlasting consolation, here
it is, and good hope through grace. Comfort your hearts and
establish you in every good word and work. A good hope. What makes it good? What makes
the believer's hope good? Is it good enough to justify
him before God? To have Jesus Christ say concerning
him, that man's going home justified? Can the Son of God say that about
you this morning as you leave here this day? See that? That's
one of my chosen. That's one of my redeemed. They're
going home justified. They've been declared not guilty
in the court of heaven by the righteous judge of all the earth.
You can't get any higher than that. Picture this, if you will. I know probably all of you has
been in court before or observed a trial. I know I have, but picture
this. You're in court. a court of law,
and suddenly the prosecutor walks over to the table for the defense
and he shakes that lawyer's hand, the defense lawyer, and he becomes
a partner with him and joins in declaring that the defendant
is not guilty. Justice joins hand with mercy
and with one united voice they say, who shall lay anything to
the charge of God's elect? Justice, as we said last Sunday,
now cries with mercy that we must go free. If it's me you
seek, our substitute says, that God's law and justice, here I
am. Let your sword fall. I'll drink
damnation dry. But when I do, my sheep have
to go free. Oh, brethren, we need not fear
the justice of God. It's an argument why God must
forgive our sins. He must be faithful and just
to do so. And the prosecutor takes hands
with the defense and says, who shall lay anything to the charge
of God's elect? Who dare do such a thing? Who
can do such a thing? Because it is God himself that
justifies. Man, you're barking up the wrong
tree. If you try to go to God, Satan, or anything else, and
try to lay any charge against his chosen, his elect, Those
for whom Christ suffered and died, you're barking up the wrong
tree because God himself has already justified them. He's
already declared them not guilty. Who is he that condemneth? It
is Christ that died. Yea, rather, that is risen again,
who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession
for us. And God hears his plea. The very fact that the Son of
God is in the presence of God is evidence that God Almighty
is satisfied with him. What gives a sinner a good hope?
Good enough to present him without a stain of sin before God? Did I say that right? Without
a trace of sin before God. No spot, no blemish whatsoever. What does this? That he might
present it to himself, a glorious church, not having a spot or
a wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and
without blemish. And this? To present you faultless
before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy? Imagine that. Man, how can that be? Because
the hope that God gives believing sinners is a good hope through
grace. Through grace. Not through works. Oh my soul. Not through merit. Not through an imaginary free
will. But through God's free grace
alone. That gives us a good hope. That
gives sinners a good hope. Nothing else can. Oh knowing
that The reason for our acceptance by a holy God is the grace of
God that comes to us through Christ Jesus. Man, that's a pillow
you can lay your head on. And no matter what comes or goes,
you can know that I am his and he is mine. And nothing can separate
us. I'm in his hand. Now who's going
to pluck me out? Who's going to pluck me out?
Anyone? Satan? Can he pluck me out? Well,
if he can, he's mightier than Jesus Christ. We should bow to
him and worship him. God forbid. That's utter nonsense. I give them eternal life. And
they'll never perish. The life that I give them will
never end. Hence, it's called eternal life. The hymn writer said, grace first
inscribed my name in God's eternal book. T'was grace that gave me
to the Lamb, who all my sorrows took. Grace taught my soul to
pray. It sure did. Remember when God
spoke to Ananias and told him to go find Saul of Tarsus? Oh,
I've heard of him. He's persecuted your people,
and he's came here for that purpose. Ananias, don't you be afraid. Behold, he prayeth. He prays. Oh, prayer is nothing but the
breathing out back to God of a renewed, regenerated soul. It was grace that gave me to
the Lamb who all my sorrows took. Grace taught my soul to pray
and made my eyes overflow. Grace did that. And it's grace
that's kept me to this day, and will not let me go. It's grace
that's kept me to this day, and you too, Billy. And will not,
will not, will not let me go. Grace made me willing. People
hear that and say, ooh, I can't stand that, don't like that.
You mean God makes people willing? Thank God that he does. Because
Christ said, you will not come to me. Left to yourself, you
not only cannot come to me, but you will not come to me. Oh,
you'll follow me. Because he was speaking to that
multitude that was fed, and they followed him across the sea.
And he said, you've not really come to me. You've not really
come to me. Because no man can really come
to me. except the Spirit of God draw him. You will not come and
you cannot come. Therefore, what's the answer
to that riddle? My people shall be willing in
the day of my power. God made me willing, and grace
brought me down, and grace taught my heart to fear, and that same
grace relieved my fears, and that same grace of God through
Christ Jesus gave me peace with God. Again, only God's pure,
free grace in Christ gives a sinner a good hope. Oh, thank God for
real grace. The only hope a sinner has of
ever entering heaven when he dies, of being accepted by God
forever, is the hope that only grace gives. It's the free grace
of God alone that gives any sinner hope. A salvation that rests
upon any foundation, any other foundation, is no hope at all. It's the build on sand. Oh, but
for real sinners, I mean real sinners, sinners that have been
stripped, sinners that have been brought down, sinners that have
been made sinners by the work of God's Holy Spirit, there's
such a sinner as those born in a state of spiritual death, unable
to do anything to save themselves. Oh, when they hear that good
news, salvation's of the Lord. It's not of him that willeth,
nor of him that runneth, but it's of God that shows mercy.
Oh, they think, mm, that's good news. That's good news. Nothing less than that will help
me. I need a miracle. I need a miracle
that only the God of all grace can perform. And blessed be his
name, he does. Real grace. A good hope through
grace. Grace alone in Christ gives us
a good hope. A hope that's not built on anything
I've done, but upon what Christ has done for me. Oh, there it
is. Would you have assurance? More
assurance? Full assurance, as the Bible
puts it? Well, don't look to yourself. Look to Christ. Look to the one you first looked
to when your sins were forgiven. Where were you looking? To the
Lamb of God. Your faith found a resting place.
Where was it? In your works? No, it was in
the Lamb of God. Well, then look to the same place
for assurance of your salvation. Other refuge have I none. My
hope rests upon Jesus Christ, upon His merit. How much is He
worth to God? Can you put a figure on that?
Paul said, even as God for Jesus Christ hath forgiven you, for
Christ's sake. Oh, what will God not do for
Christ's sake? My hope rests upon His merit
and His power and His grace. If asked the reason of my hope,
I answer in the words of another old hymn. My hope is built on
nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not
trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. On Christ, the solid rock I stand."
Oh, man. Oh, that's solid. That's solid. Oh, the wind may blow, the storms
may come, they will, but they cannot sweep me off of the rock
Christ Jesus. On Christ, the solid rock I stand. All of the ground is sinking
sand. The quote in your bulletin today
by old John Bunyan, he said he found that it wasn't his good
frame that improved his grace, his standing. It wasn't his bad
brains that lessened his grace or standing, because his righteousness
was in heaven. His righteousness is Jesus Christ,
the same yesterday, the day, and forever. And all those that
God accepts in Jesus Christ, that are made righteous by Jesus
Christ, like him, their righteousness, their standing, their acceptance,
is the same yesterday, today, and forever. It will never ever
change. Here's the second, the second
thing about our hope, Hebrews chapter 6. Paul calls it an anchor,
an anchor. Hebrews 6 verse 19. Which hope
we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, which
entereth into that within the veil, that which anchors our
souls in this turbulent world is the blessed hope we have in
Christ, causing us to look for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ
unto eternal life, standing as it were, as Don would say, upon
the tiptoe of faith. God the Holy Spirit tells us
that hope is both sure and steadfast because it's all together in
Christ. He's the anchor. He's the anchor. There's nobody here, no child
of God here that can identify with what we sometimes see. When this world is tossing me
like a ship upon the sea, here's my anchor. I've got an anchor. Sure, steadfast, it enters within
the veil. It's anchor to Christ. Thou who
rulest wind and water, stand by me. Stand by me. We are assured of the hope of
glory by Christ's entrance into glory himself as our forerunner. Look at verse 20 here in Hebrews
6. Whether the forerunner is for
us entered, even Jesus made a high priest forever after the order
of Melchizedek. After his resurrection from the
dead, the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and entered glory
and sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high. Not for
himself, no, no, no, but for us as our head and representative,
for whom he suffered, bled, and died upon the cross. He entered
into heaven as our forerunner, we read, and he took possession
of it in our name, and now he appears in the presence of God
for us. You remember John the Baptist
was called the forerunner of Jesus Christ. If Christ hadn't
have followed John, that would have been a lie. John would have
been no forerunner if Christ didn't come after him. Jesus
Christ is the forerunner of his people. He's gone before. I go before you. I go to prepare
a place for you. And if his people don't follow,
then it's a lie, it's not true. The very fact that Jesus Christ
is our forerunner in heaven is the pledge, the earnest, the
guarantee that all his people are going to follow him there.
Our Redeemer's representation of us in glory is a real representation
and absolutely secures our entrance into glory with him that we can
be said as being already there. That's what Paul said in Ephesians
2, didn't he? Verse 6, and had raised us up
together, together, one with Him, and made us set together
in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Assurance, again, like
every other aspect of salvation, is a matter of faith, not of
works. It doesn't come by keeping eyes on self, but keeping eyes
on Christ. It's then, it's then that we
sing, oh, blessed assurance. Blessed assurance. Jesus is mine. That feels like a warm blanket
around me. These are they, we read, which
follow the Lamb, whether so ever he goeth. As Christ went into
the grave and came out, so will his people. We read about it
in 1 Thessalonians 4. As Christ ascended back to heaven,
so will his people. They follow the Lamb wherever
he goes. Blessed is that person who has
learned to look to Christ alone for the whole of God's salvation,
the whole of his acceptance with the Holy Lord God. Blessed art
thou, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this
unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. The third thing
about our hope, 1 Peter chapter 1. We read here that it's a living
hope. It's a lively hope. 1 Peter 1
and 3. Blessed be the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy
hath begotten us again unto a lively, a living hope by the resurrection
of Jesus Christ from the dead. Why does Christ's resurrection
give us a living hope? Because his resurrection tells
us that God accepted the sacrifice. that God was satisfied with his
son's suffering and that gives us a lively living hope because
he died in the place of his people. A dead Savior doesn't save anybody. Christ left on the cross doesn't
save anybody. It's because he ever liveth,
we read in Hebrews 7, is the reason he's able to save to the
uttermost all that come unto God by him. John cast out on
the Isle of Patmos Christ appeared to him and said, I am he that
liveth and was dead, and behold, I'm alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of
hell and of death. The resurrection of Jesus Christ
guarantees the resurrection of all of his people. Is that not
what he taught? John chapter 12, verse 24, Verily,
verily, truly, truly, I say unto you, Except if corn or wheat
fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone. But if it die,
it bringeth forth much brood. He told his disciples that night
before he went to the garden, because I live, you shall live
also. I'll live as long as my head
lives. I'll live as long as Jesus Christ
lives. Galatians 3, for you are dead,
and your life is here with Christ in God. When Christ, not if Christ,
but when Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also
appear with him in glory. Father, Father, I will also that
those whom you've given me be with me where I am. Oh, there's heaven. Be with me
where I am that they may behold my glory. The believer's hope
is not in dead rituals. lifeless religion. Man, enough
of that. That's on every hand. Or traditions,
but a living Savior who gives us eternal life, gives eternal
life to all those he laid down his life for and took it up again. He did both for them. 1 Peter
chapter 2, to whom coming as unto a living stone, speaking
of Christ, verse 4, to whom coming as unto a living stone, disallowed
indeed of men, but chosen of God and precious. He also's living
stones are built upon a spiritual house, or built up a spiritual
house. A holy priesthood to offer up
spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it's contained
in the scripture, Isaiah 26, I believe. Behold, I lay in Zion
a chief cornerstone, a lake precious, and he that believeth on him
shall not be confounded. shall not be ashamed, never,
never." To which Jesus hears a hymn of old John Kent. He wrote,
between Jesus and the chosen race subsist a bond of sovereign
grace that held with its infernal train shall never dissolve nor
rend in twain. This sacred bond shall never
break, the earth shall be to her center shake. Rest the doubting
saint assured of this, for God has pledged his holiness. This
sacred tie forbids their fears, for all He is and has is theirs. With Him their head they stand
or fall, their life, their surety, their all. The last thing about
our hope, Titus chapter 2. Paul writing again to his beloved
Titus. Titus chapter 2, he refers to
our hope as that blessed hope. Looking for that blessed hope,
and the glorious appearing. Think about that. Think about that. We read it. Oh Christ shall descend from
heaven with a shout. The voice of the archangel and
the trump of God. And we which are alive and remain
will be changed. He said in 1 Corinthians 15,
we shall be changed. Oh glory to his name. I'm not
always going to be like this. I'm not always going to have
a cold heart. I'm not always going to be unfeeling, uncaring,
unappreciative of all that He's done for me. Not always. I'm
going to be changed. Changed forever. Oh, that blessed
hope and glorious appearing I've heard for years. Haven't you?
Preachers talk about Christ coming. And they talk about where He's
going to come. How He's going to come. Where
He's going to come. But never say a word about who's
coming. Who's coming? It's the one who's
coming that matters the most. It's that blessed hope we have
in the one who's coming. It's his appearing. The appearing
of Jesus Christ himself that makes it glorious. How glorious
will it be when Jesus Christ himself appears? I can't imagine. What a glorious sight to behold,
when our great God and Savior comes again to take his loved
ones home. He said, no one knows the day
or the hour. We don't need to know, but we
know who. We look forward to that time,
to be with Him in glory where there'll be no more death, and
no more sorrow, and no more pain, and no more tears. But that's
not the greatest blessing is. The very heaven of heaven is
this. We'll see the Lord Jesus Christ himself. Oh my, so what
a, no wonder Paul says that's a blessed, glorious hope. Believers
are not told to look for signs of Christ's coming, but to look
for the coming Christ. Not one of them shall fail to
be with him in glory that he came to redeem. He said, you'll
be with me in my father's house. He's your father too. You'll
be with me and my father in your father's house forever. Oh, what
a blessed, blessed hope to be with Christ forever, to look
upon the face of the one who saved me by his grace. What a blessed hope that is. Job said, I'm going to die, and
the skin worms are going to devour this flesh. But he said, I know
my Redeemer lives. And I'll see my God. I'm going
to see Him for myself. And I'm going to love Him with
an unsinning heart. Oh, to be with Christ forever. That is
the hope every believing sinner has, and it's a good hope through
grace. It's a hope that's laid up for
us in heaven. It's a hope we have as an anchor for our soul,
