What does the Bible say about submission in relationships?

The Bible teaches that Christians should submit to one another in the fear of Christ as a reflection of God's order.

Submission is a foundational aspect of Christian living that reflects the order established by God. In Ephesians 5:21, Paul instructs believers to 'submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.' This calls for a mutual respect and yielding to one another, rooted in love and humility. Such submission aligns with the example of Christ, who demonstrated perfect submission to God the Father and served others selflessly. This principle extends beyond personal relationships and becomes a societal blessing, as a community of believers filled with the Spirit positively influences the world around them. Ultimately, submission is vital for maintaining order and harmony both in the church and in broader society.

Ephesians 5:21, Philippians 2:3-8

How do we know that submission is important for Christians?

Submission is crucial for Christians as it reflects Christ's example and upholds God's design for order in relationships.

Submission is not merely a suggestion in Scripture; it is a central tenet of Christian doctrine that safeguards the integrity of relationships, both within the church and in society. Ephesians 5:21 sets the tone for Christian relationships by highlighting the importance of mutual submission, which finds its ultimate model in the life of Jesus Christ. Christ's submission to the Father's will, even unto death, serves as a paradigm for how Christians should interact with one another. This attitude fosters unity, humility, and a spirit of service, countering the self-centered mindset prevalent in contemporary society. When Christians practice submission, it not only glorifies God but also strengthens the community, providing a witness to the world of His love and grace.

Ephesians 5:21, Philippians 2:5-8, Hebrews 5:8

Why is the concept of submission vital in a Christian community?

Submission is vital in a Christian community as it embodies Christ’s teachings and fosters harmony among believers.

In a Christian community, the concept of submission is essential for fostering harmony and demonstrating the gospel's transformative power. By adhering to Ephesians 5:21, Christians are called to submit to one another, reflecting the humility and love that Christ exhibited. This act of submission counters the pervasive culture of entitlement and self-centeredness, which destroys relationships and undermines community unity. Instead, submission promotes a spirit of cooperation and care for one another's needs, allowing the church to function effectively as the body of Christ. Such dynamics manifest the reality of the gospel, providing a powerful witness to the surrounding world. Ultimately, a church that embodies submission is one that reflects Christ’s love and serves as a beacon of hope in a divided society.

You return there with me. We
come here to the fifth chapter of Ephesians in verse 21. Let me say again that these instructions
are for Christians. But I tell you, The world, a
community, a nation, profits when the Christian lives out
his life following these instructions that we have from God's Word.
He says here in verse 21 of Ephesians 5, submitting yourselves one
to another in the fear of Christ, in the fear of God. And we know
he's talking to the church. He's talking to believers because
he began there in verse 18 and told us to be filled with the
Spirit. Well, who can be filled with
the Spirit but believers? Children of God. And he goes
on there in verse 19 and says, Speaking to yourselves in psalms
and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in
your heart to the Lord. Here is worship. Who else but
a believer, who else but a Christian can worship? And he says there
in verse 20, giving thanks always unto God and the Father, your
Father, your Father, in the name of Jesus Christ. Who can be thankful
but a believer, a Christian? So he goes on here and tells
the Christians, the believers, to submit themselves one to another
in the fear of God and how wonderful and how good it is when the believers
walk according to this rule. This is the rule of Christ's
kingdom, submitting yourself one to another. But you know
how helpful this is to society? When the church is done good,
when the church is filled with the Spirit, you take a small
group of people that are filled with the Spirit, and they're
making melody in their hearts to the Lord, and they're a thankful
people, that just rubs off on society. It does society good. It does the lost good that's
around them. The Lord Jesus said, You're the
light of the world. You're the light for the world.
What is light for? Is it not to shine in darkness?
And who but the church shines in darkness? In the darkness
of sin, to show people the way out of it. Giving them a light
for direction. You are the light of the world.
You're the salt of the earth. What does salt do? Does it not
quench thirst? It makes you thirsty, doesn't
it? Just eat a bunch of ham that's
full of salt, and it won't be long you'll be a-drinking to
quench your thirst. That's what the church is. You're salt. You're the salt of the earth.
My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. I'm thirsty. And hopefully that thirst will
rub off on some lost people, and they'll begin to thirst for
the living God. What does salt do? It preserves,
doesn't it? My dad used to put it on big
slabs of hog and preserve them. It would keep for many, many
months. The church is a preserving influence
upon this life, upon the lost people, upon this world. Preserves
them. Preserves them. If I find ten
Christians, he said, down in Sodom, I'll preserve it. I'll
spare it. It preserves some integrity in
a nation. It preserves a sense of what's
right and what's wrong. Of what God will accept and what
He won't. It's preserved. You are the salt
of the world. You're the pillar and ground
of the truth. If the world ever hears of the
truth, you know who it's going to hear from? The church. The
church. In the light of this, I think
verse 21 is so important. Submitting yourselves one to
another in the fear of the Lord. Not just for our own good, because
it's instructions to us, but for the good of the community
in which you and I live, this society. One of the most dangerous
attitudes in society today, and we all see this, is this sense
of entitlement. Have you ever in your life witnessed from the masses of people that
I have rights. I have rights. And if I don't
get my way, whatever it is, I'm going to complain, and I'm going
to fuss, and I'm going to demonstrate until I get my way. Our forefathers,
they set up this nation with freedom and liberty for all. But their sense of freedom and
liberty was this, you pursue happiness based upon individual
responsibilities and based upon self-reliance and justice for
all. What does liberty and justice
mean for so many in our generation? Freedom from responsibility. Freedom from self-reliance. Freedom from what's right and
what's just. Freedom to live any way I choose
and do whatever I want to do, and nobody has a right to question
it. Isn't that what we see around
us today? It's right the opposite from what Paul instructs us here
to be and to do. Submitting yourselves one to
another. Giving up your so-called rights. This whole attitude that we see
around us today is one of self. Self-exalted. Self-willed. Self-loved. Self-centeredness. Self. And that's a dangerous
attitude. The last day's perilous time
shall come, for men shall be lovers. of their own selves. And you take a man that loves
himself more than anybody else, that's a dangerous man to be
around. Now, let's look at this word,
submit, here in verse 21. Submit, it means to subject oneself
to. To put oneself under another
to yield to obey. It's an old military word, and
I never was in the military, but there's some of you here
that were in the military, and you know what rank means, don't
you? That's what this word is. It has to do with rank. And when
you first went into the military, it was almost a nightmare, wasn't
it? And you know why it was a nightmare?
One of the reasons, you had to learn how to submit. They go
by rank in that place. And you lose your rights, don't
you? You're a private, you salute the sergeant. And the sergeant
has somebody over him that he salutes, and he has somebody
over him that he salutes and submits to, and it goes all the
way back up to the president. He's the chief. And the generals
are subject to him. It's an old military term. It's
God's order. God has an order in society,
and He has an order in the church. Submit. Look here how He talks
about it in verse 22. Wives, submit yourselves unto
your own husbands. Look at verse 24. Therefore,
as the church is subject unto Christ. That's the very same
word. The church is subject. It submits to Christ. The wife
submits to the husband. Look down in chapter 6 and verse
1. Children, obey your parents in
the Lord, for this is right. Very same concept. Submit to
your parents. Look over in verse 5. Servants,
be obedient to them that are your masters. And look down in
verse 8 and verse 9. And ye masters, do the same things
unto them, forbearing threatenance, Knowing that you also have a
Master in heaven. See the rank there? See the order
of society? Submitting. It's always submitting. Always obeying others. Look over to your left, over
in 1 Corinthians. Look on 1 Corinthians chapter
11 and verse 3. Here is the order. You find it
all through society as well as in the church. Look at this.
1 Corinthians chapter 11 and verse 3. I would that you knew, but I
would have you to know that the head of every man is Christ. Every believing man has a head
that he submits to and that he obeys. And who is that? Christ. And look at this. And the head
of the woman is the man. It doesn't mean that the woman
is inferior to the man. It simply means this is God's
order. The man is the head of the woman. This is so in society, isn't
it? We see this all the time. And
it's so in the church. God has set that order. And look at this. And the head
of Christ is God. Even Christ as a head. The Son of God. Not Christ as
God. Christ as God has no head. But
Christ the Son, the mediator between God and man, He has a
head. He's subject to His Father. Lord, I came to do the will of
Him that submitted. He's the servant of the Father.
So we have this order in society, and order in the church, and
even order in the Godhead. Look in Hebrews chapter 13 in
another place. I just want to show you some
of these places. To show you, everywhere we turn in the Scriptures,
we find this order. Look in Hebrews chapter 13, and
look in verse 7. Look at this. He's speaking here
to the church. to the members of the body of
Christ. And he says, Remember them which
have the rule over you. Now, who is that? You mean somebody
rules? Yes. Who does that? Pastors. He sent pastors over the congregation
and says, Remember those who have this rule. Remember them
in your affections. Remember them in your prayers.
Hold them in your memory. Don't forget them. Remember what
they tell you. Remember them. Why? They've spoken unto you the Word
of God, whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
Look in verse 17. He says the same thing, but look
how he says it here. He uses this very word that we're
looking at. Obey them. He says over there
in verse 7, remember them. And now he says, Obey them which
have the rule over you, and submit yourselves. That's God's order. That's God's rank. Why? For they
watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that
they may do it with joy, and not with grief. For that is unprofitable
to you. It's not about who's better.
It has nothing to do with that. It has nothing to do with the
pastor is the smartest person in the congregation. It has nothing
to do with that. It simply has to do with this.
This is God's order. This is God's order. So often
you run into congregations that have somebody sitting in the
pew that knows much more than the pastor knows. But that dear
soul sitting in the pew submits itself to the pastor. Why? Because
he knows that that's God's order. So he submits. He submits. There's a lot of ladies that
are smarter than their Christian husbands in theological things,
in spiritual matters. But you know something? They
submit to their husbands. They don't try to rule over their
husbands because they have more spiritual sins. They submit to
their husbands. Why do they do that? That's God's
order. It's God's reign. Submitting
yourself one to another. Why submit yourself unto your
own husband? Society can't exist without this
order. The church can't exist without
it, and society cannot resist without this rank, this order.
Listen to what Paul says, and Peter says it too. Put them in
mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates. And here's what Peter said, submitting
yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake. Submitting. Submitting. That's
God's order. Who could live and who would
want to live in a society that we don't have this rank? And
we don't have this order. Is it abused? Of course it is.
But what if we didn't have it? Have you seen what's going on
south of the border the last few years? It's so dangerous
now, you can't go down in that place. I left Yuma, Arizona a
few years ago and went down into Mexico and looked around without
any fear. I never do that now. You know why? This order is being
destroyed. It's being destroyed. I remember
Martin Luther. when he left the Catholic Church
and began to preach the liberty that was in Christ, the grace
that was in Christ. And these peasants, German peasants,
misunderstood him altogether. And they had to take Luther and
hide him, and these peasants rebelled against the government. And Luther had so much influence
at that time, the authorities went to him and said, Luther,
what should we do? These peasants are going to overthrow
the government and there's going to be tyranny, chaos. And you
know what Luther said to them? Kill them. Kill them. He said it was the most heart-wrenching
thing that he ever said in his life, but that's what he told
the authorities. Kill them. We cannot have peasants reigning. We cannot have chaos and tyranny. Kill them. And they did. They
killed thousands and thousands and thousands of those rebel
peasants. One of the troubles with our
forefathers, even with men like Jefferson and Franklin and Washington
and those guys who had came over from England, when we were going
to set up our government, one of the things that they conflicted
about in their own mind was, are we allowed unto God to do
this? And some say you cannot overthrow
the government of England. That's against God's law. And
others said we're not overthrowing their government. We left their
government to come here and set up our own. And that's the only
grounds they had of setting up this Constitution that we now
have. That they didn't overthrow another
government just to set this one up. They said, we've left them. It's them that come here and
are trying to overthrow us. But they were conflicted about
this. And the reason is this very thing. Submit yourselves
to every ordinance of man. Submit yourselves to the magistrates,
to the powers that be, because this is God's order. You know,
this is what got us in trouble to begin with. A lack of submission. You look at all the chaos and
trouble in society today, and you know where it started? There
in the garden. And you know why it started?
Our two parents would not submit themselves unto the authority
of their Creator. That's where it started. Satan
came to Eve and he said, you know God's trying to withhold
something good from you? You've got rights, you know.
And God is trying to withhold something good from you. If you'll
just quit submitting yourself to His authority and His Word
and obey my voice, I'll tell you, you can be like gods. And she listened, didn't she?
She listened. And she ate of that fruit and
gave it to her husband. Look at the trouble you ladies.
Look at the trouble you ladies. You know why you ladies are told
to submit to your husband? Because of what he did. Woman,
because you've done this, your desire is going to be to your
husband, and he's going to rule over you. And you know why you
have so much trouble burying a child, the whole process of
your pregnancy? You know why there's so much
pain and sickness involved in that? What he did. That's where
the trouble began. not wanting to submit. And look
at the trouble her husband brought upon the whole human race when
she gave that fruit to him, and he disobeyed. He refused to submit. And now, sin entered, and death
has entered, and men are still dying. We still see the effects
of that. And what got us into this? A
lack of submission. A man's chief problem since that
fall has been this, an unwillingness to submit to God. Ain't that
the issue now? Who is the Lord that I should
obey Him? We will not have this man to
reign over us. That's the issue, isn't it? I will not bow to Christ. I will
not give myself up to Him. I want it my way. And we cannot
be saved until we once again come and give ourselves up, submit
ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ and His authority, His rule.
Look here with me in Romans chapter 4. Turn over to your left to
the book of Romans chapter 4 and look at this. This is exactly
what our Apostle is telling us here. Romans chapter 4, and look
here in verse 1. He prays this way. He says, Brethren,
my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they
might be saved. What a statement to make about
the religious people. Who is he talking about? Well,
verse 2 he says, they have a zeal of God. Look at them in the temple
in Romans chapter 10 verse 1. Is that what I told you? Romans
chapter 10 verse 1. What did I tell you? Romans 4. You don't always do as I say.
Do as I'm thinking. You ought to know that I wasn't
going to Romans 4. What would have been in Romans 4? It has to be
in chapter 10. Romans chapter 10. See verse
1? My heart's desire? and prayer
to God for Israel, the nation of Israel as a whole, that they
might be saved. They're lost. They've got a zeal
of God. Watch them as they go up to the
temple to worship. Look at them the way they dress.
Look how they conduct themselves. You can tell they're very religious
people. But they're lost. Paul, how in
the world can you say that? Don't you imagine when people
got this epistle, they began to read it? They said, boy, I'll
tell you what, I didn't like that fellow much when he was
a Pharisee, but I don't like him at all now. Look how narrow-minded
he's got. Look how bigoted he is. How can
these people be lost? Who is he to judge anyway? He's
got so judgmental. Paul, how do you know they're
not saved? He said, I know it this way. Every one of us are
naked before God. We are sinful before God. And
we need a righteousness that we cannot earn. And we cannot
work out ourselves. And that is the righteousness
of God's Son. And the way we get that righteousness
is coming back to Him and submitting to this righteousness. Counting
our own as filthy rags. And saying, Lord Jesus, I submit
to You to have this righteousness. And they haven't done it. They
haven't done it. Ain't that what He said in verse
3? For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and therefore
going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted
themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end
of the lawful righteousness. You see a man that is still trying
to establish his own righteousness, here's why he isn't saved. He's
not thrown away that old righteousness and submitted, submitted, come
back under the rule of Christ. and submitted to His righteousness.
Not submitted. They've not done it, Paul said.
They've not done it. Look at them. Talk to them. Brothers
and sisters, until a man gives himself up, until he surrenders
himself to Christ, he won't be saved. We got into this mess
by disobeying, by lack of submissive attitude. We can only get out
of this mess by submitting. By submitting. We cannot have
Jesus as our Savior and not have Him as Lord. We must submit to
Him. You remember the story about
Hagar when she had despised her mistress, Sarah? She got pregnant with Abraham
and she started looking at Sarah and said, Ha ha, you can have
a baby, but I'm bearing a baby. I've got your husband's baby.
And boy, Sarah got rough with him. And she ran off. And the
angel of the Lord found her down in the wilderness and said, Hagar,
where are you going? I'm fleeing from Sarah. He says,
you've got yourself in trouble, haven't you? You've got yourself
in trouble. And you know what that angel
told her? There's only one way out of the mess that you're in.
Go back to your mistress and submit yourself under her hand. And that's what we tell every
man, woman, boy and girl. You're in mess. You're in trouble. And the only way out of this
trouble is to return to the Son of God and submit yourself to
Him. That's it. That's it. When a man can do that, he's
a saved individual. But until he does that, no matter
what zeal he has, he's lost. He's lost. Hebrews chapter 5, listen to
this, "...though he were a son, yet learned he obedience by the
things which he suffered, and being made the author of eternal
salvation to all of them that obey him." The word is submit
to. Submit to him. He is the author
of eternal salvation to all of those who submit to him. Acts 5.32, Peter told those Pharisees,
we are witnesses of these things which Christ has done, and so
also is the Holy Spirit whom God hath given to them that submit,
that obey Him. The only way out of this mess
is submission. And you know something? When
we submit to the authority and the rule of Jesus Christ, It's
not too awful difficult to submit to one another. Have you ever
noticed that? Not too hard, then, is it? I want to show you two or three
passages of Scripture. I want you to turn over to Luke,
chapter 2. And maybe the young people here,
you young children, maybe this will help you. Because our apostle
went on in Ephesians chapter 6 and told the children to obey
their parents. Submit to your parents. Do you
know who is the perfect example for you to do that? The Lord
Jesus Himself. He is the perfect example for
submission. Look here in Luke chapter 2 and
look down in verse 46. This is where the Lord Jesus
stayed here in Jerusalem on the feast day, and Mary and Joseph
and his other relatives were going back to Galilee. And they
realized he wasn't there. He's not among us. They went
three days. In verse 45, when they came back to the temple,
came back to Jerusalem, in verse 45, And when they found him not,
they returned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass
that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in
the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them
questions." Twelve years old. And all that heard him were astounded
at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were
amazed. And his mother said unto him,
Son, why hast thou dealt thus with us? Behold, thy father and
I have sought thee sorrow." And he said unto them, How is it
that you sought me? Don't you know, wish you not,
that I must be about my father's business? And they understood
not this saying which he had spoken to them. And he went down
with them and came to Nazareth, and look at this, and was subject
to them. Now, here's a 12-year-old boy,
but he's the Son of God from heaven, and he knew it. And he
knew that he had a work to do that his father had given him,
and he was anxious to begin with it. But he knew something else
too, that his father had an order. His father had a rank. And he
said, my parents, Joseph and my mother Mary, rank over me. So he submitted himself. Don't
that give your children some encouragement to submit? Christ
Himself did. The Lord of Glory did it. If
He did it, then you should do it. Submit yourselves unto your
own children. Look in Philippians chapter 2. Our Lord is a good example of
all of us in this whole concept of submission. Look in Philippians
chapter 2. Look here in verse 3. I tell you, one of the most amazing scenes, I think, sometime in
all the New Testament, apart from the cross, is when the Lord
Jesus was in the upper room with His disciples. And they were
sitting there talking. And He was ready to go to the
cross. And He was talking about humility
and serving one another. And He said, You call Me Lord
and Master, don't you? They said, That's who you are.
You are our Lord and our Master. And He rises up from that table. and gets him a towel and girds
himself. And he gets down on his knees
and he washes the dirty feet of each one of those disciples.
Can you get a picture of that scene in your mind? He's so amazed, Peter, he said,
Lord, you ain't going to wash my feet. You're the Lord of glory. You're my master. I should be
washing your feet. Why did he do that? as an example
for us. If I, your Lord and Master, have
so washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. As
I have done unto you, my attitude toward you, let your attitude
be that way toward your brothers and sisters in Christ. What's
he talking about? Submitting. Submitting. Being subject one to another.
And look here why he did it in verse 3. Philippians 2, verse
3. Let nothing be done through strife
or vain glory, self-exalting pride, but in lowliness of mind
let each esteem other more than himself. Let this mind be in you which
was also in Christ who being in the very essence of God, the
form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God because
he was. And yet, look at this, he made
himself of no reputation. and took upon him the essence,
the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men,
and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and
became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." What
an example to us. of submitting ourselves one to
another. This word submitting means to
rank under. To rank under. That's the heart. That's the best meaning of this
word as it's used in our text. Submitting yourself one to another. Why? Because you rank under. What keeps us from submitting
ourselves? Is it not we exalt our own selves?
We think we're above everybody else. But when a person thinks
rightly of himself, we begin to think, who's more vile than
I am? Who's more unworthy than I am? I am the lowest. Therefore, we have no trouble
submitting. If a man thinks himself to be
something when he's nothing, he deceives himself. Don't think
more highly of ourselves than we ought to. And how should we
think about ourselves? I rank the lowest. I rank the
lowest. Of all God's people, I rank the
lowest. I'm your pastor, and in this
office, I may bear rank over you. That's God's order. But I tell you, when I come down
out of this pulpit, I'm just one of you. As a Christian, as
a child of God, I submit myself to you, and you submit yourself
to me. There is no big I's and no little
U's. Every one of us should think
of ourselves, I'm of the lowest rank, and therefore I'll take
the lowest seat. Isn't this right opposite from
what we're seeing in this generation? Who more worthy than me? You just look at me cross-eyed
and I'll kill you. If you have a pair of sneakers
I want, I may kill you to get them. Why? Because of who I am. I am somebody. Oh, how foreign that is, brothers
and sisters, to the Christian attitude that we should have.
We're nothing. We're nothing. Boy, you and I
need to keep this in mind, don't we? The way up is down. The way to be exalted is submission. The way to serve Christ and to
honor Christ is only with humility. Now, three or four scriptures,
and I'll just read these and we'll close. Read these three
or four scriptures, wouldn't you, right quickly. Look in 1
Peter chapter 5. 1 Peter chapter 5. We see this taught all through
the Word of God. It's not just the Apostle Paul
that teaches it. All of them teach it. Look in 1 Peter chapter
5. And look in verse 1. 1 Peter chapter 5 and verse 1.
The elders which are among you I exhort. I am also an elder
and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker
of the glory which shall be revealed." Feed the flock of God. You pastors,
feed the flock. They're among you. Feed them.
Take in the oversight thereof, not by constraint. Don't let
God have to whip you every week just to get you to study and
prepare to feed His flock. But do it willingly. That's the
only way to serve your name. That's the only way to submit
one to another, is willingly. We shouldn't have the Lord to
have to force us when we know what to do. Not for filthy lucre, not for
dishonest gain, not for money or praise of self, but of a ready
mind. Neither as being lords over God's
heritage, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief
shepherds shall appear, you shall receive a crown of glory that
fades not away. He's telling here, he's telling
these pastors, submit yourself to the Lord. Submit yourself
to that congregation to feed them as the Lord has commanded
you. And he goes on in verse 5, likewise you younger, submit
yourselves to the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one
to another, and look at this, here's the secret to it, and
be clothed with humility. For God resists the proud, and
He gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under
the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. How is it that we get exalted? Only in ourselves. Look in James
chapter 4 right quickly. Just back over to your left.
James chapter 4. And look in verse 5. Boy, James
knows us. He knows us. Look what he says
about us. James chapter 4 and verse 5. Do you think that the
Scripture says in vain, the Spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to
envy. You know what that word lusteth
to envy means? It craves with jealousy. It craves with jealousy. Sometimes
when somebody comes here to preach, and they preach a good message,
I rejoice in my inner man. Oh, I just rejoice that he's
fed me. I rejoice that he's fed you. But you know something about
this old man? I wish he'd have failed. Man,
that's awful that he preached such a good thing. We've got
two men, you know. We've got an inner man. And we've
got this old man. And I'm going to be honest, aren't
you? You have any trouble with this old man? Do you ever get
jealous? Do you ever get envious? I wish
I had that. I wish he ever did that. I wish
I could have done that. I wish I could have said, oh,
we're so full of jealousy. I tell you, he'll find you out.
You may say, I ain't that way. He'll find you out. How do we
get out of this dilemma? How do we keep this old man beat
down? Look at what James says. Verse 6, But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he says, God resisteth
the proud, but he giveth grace to the humble. Submit yourselves
therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he shall
flee from you. Draw near to God, and he'll draw
near to you. Submit. Submit. Humble yourself. Let this mind be in you. That's
the way we can submit ourselves one to another. You may have
a false humility, and you may pretend to submit, but he'll
tell on you. He'll tell on you. One more passage in 2 Corinthians
chapter 9, and we'll close with Second Reading is chapter 9,
and look in verse 12. Paul is talking here about giving.
Verse 7, he says, As every man according as he has purposed
in his heart, so let him give, not grudgingly or out of necessity,
for God loveth a cheerful giver. Talking about giving. Boy, this
was a giving church. Whatever problems they had, they
had some. But boy, it wasn't on giving.
They gave. They gave. And Paul said their
giving did many things. And here was one of them. Look
in verse 13. While by the experiment of this ministration
they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of
Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them and to
all men." Paul said, one day, see how much you're given? Not
just of your money, but your time, your labors, your thoughts,
your love. You're just a given people. And
he said, you're living up to your profession. You profess to be subject to
the gospel of Christ. Isn't that a confession? Look
what he said again. While by the experiment of this
administration they glorify God for your professed subjection
to the gospel of Christ. You profess a subjection. Who are you subject to? What
are you subject to? The gospel. I've come under its
rule, under its authority, its gracious authority. And, oh,
brothers and sisters, when we profess that, may God give us
grace to live up to it. What does it mean when I profess
a subjection to the gospel? It means I give. It means I'm
a giving person. It means I'm a loving person.
It means I want to assemble with God's people. It means I'm tenderhearted. It means I'm forgiven. It means
I walk as Christ walked. That's what it means to profess,
to be under subjection to the gospel. We have men today that
are professing the gospel, and they're not a bit more subject
to it than anything. Shame on them. Shame on them.
They want a bit more dark in the doors of this congregation
or any other place. And yet they say, we're subject
to the gospel. I'd be careful, wouldn't you?
God give us grace to live up. Are all of us here this evening,
have we professed a subjection to the gospel? I have. Many of
you have. And God help us that when people
look at us, They'll say, boy, those people are living up to
what they profess. Submit yourselves one to another
in the fear of Christ. Let's pray.
