What does the Bible say about the fruit of the Spirit?

The Bible describes the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (Galatians 5:22-23).

The fruit of the Spirit is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit's work within believers, producing qualities that reflect Christ's character. In Galatians 5:22-23, the Apostle Paul outlines these attributes: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. This fruit is singular in nature, indicating that these qualities are interconnected and collectively represent the character of a true believer. As believers walk in the Spirit, they are enabled to exhibit these fruits, which stand in stark contrast to the works of the flesh, highlighting the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer.

Galatians 5:22-23

How do we know that believers are not under the law?

Believers are not under the law because Christ has redeemed them from its curse, leading them under grace instead (Galatians 3:13).

According to Galatians 5:18, believers are not under the law but are led by the Spirit of God. This truth is rooted in the redemptive work of Christ, as stated in Galatians 3:13, which declares that 'Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law.' The law demands perfection, which no human can attain. Therefore, believers are justified and sanctified not through adherence to the law, but through faith in Christ. This aligns with Romans 6:14, where Paul writes, 'For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law, but under grace.' By understanding that salvation is by grace alone, through faith in Christ, believers can rejoice in their freedom from the demands of the law.

Galatians 5:18, Galatians 3:13, Romans 6:14

Why is it important for Christians to walk in the Spirit?

Walking in the Spirit enables Christians to resist the desires of the flesh and bear the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).

Walking in the Spirit is crucial for Christians as it empowers them to overcome the inherent struggles and desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 states, 'This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.' The believer experiences an internal conflict between the new nature, which seeks to glorify God, and the old sinful nature, which leads to sin. Therefore, living in accordance with the Spirit allows believers to manifest the qualities of Christ and live in a way that honors God. Furthermore, as they yield to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Christians are assured of their identity as children of God, effectively equipping them to navigate life's challenges with grace and power.

Galatians chapter 5, and we'll continue in our Bible
study from Galatians chapter 5, and I hope to cover verse
18 down through the end of the chapter, and I pray God will
be our teacher, the Holy Spirit be our leader, our guide, and
I pray for wisdom, I pray for liberty to declare His truth
Notice, if you will, let's read verse 16 and 17 in a way of an
introduction. And this is where we left off
last time we studied. This I say then. This I say. Here's what God would
have us to know. It's His Word. It's His truth.
It's His Gospel given through the Apostle. I say then to you
who are believers and lovers of the Lord Jesus Christ, walk
and live in the Spirit. in God the Holy Spirit, by the
power of the Spirit, under the leadership of the Spirit, and
you shall not, you shall not fulfill the lust, the lust of
the flesh, this old rotten nature that we still drag around with
us every day. Verse 17, he reminds us of this
warfare. this warfare, this battle that's
going on within every believer. Now, I didn't say every person,
every believer. Those who are unbelievers do
not have this spiritual battle, this spiritual warfare going
on. But the believer is acquainted
with this. The believer knows something
of the pain and anguish of our old sinful nature, and also the
blettedness of the peace we have in the Lord Jesus Christ. The
flesh, that's that old Adam nature that we're born with, that's
ruined, that's rotten, that will never improve. Born in sin and
it'll die in sin. This is the old nature, the old
Adam flesh. The flesh wars, is the word there,
lusteth against This new man we have in Christ, this new spiritual
nature being born of God, being begotten of God, the believer
has in dwelling within Him implanted and imparted a new nature. If
any man be in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things are passed
away, behold, all things have become new. These two natures
that every believer has, these are contrary. They're opposites. They're opposites, one to the
other. So that you cannot do the things
that you really want to do. I would, if I could, worship
God without any sin whatsoever. worship Him and believe Him perfectly. That's what I want to do, but
I can't. I'm hindered. We do worship Him,
we do honor Him, but I have this old rotten nature that drags
us down, that slows us down, that would impede our progress,
mitigate our progress. You cannot do the things that
you really want to do. Someday I will. Someday in His
blessed presence, being predestinated and conformed to His blessed
image, in that day having a new body, like unto His glorious
body, I'll love Him perfectly. Faith will end in sight. I'll
see Him face to face. I'll know Him and love Him like
I really want to do right now, but I'm hindered by this old
rotten flesh." Now, that's what he's saying here. This battle
within the believer. I remind you again of the scripture
from last week in Romans 7. Let me just read it to you. And
Paul had this battle. He had this warfare. God's servant. God's servant. God's preacher.
And he writes this way. This is his testimony. He says,
I delight in the law of God, the principle of God after the
inward man. But I see another principle,
another law warring in my members. warring against the law of my
mind, bringing me into captivity to the law of sin, which is in
my members, which is in my flesh. And then he cries out, O wretched
man! Not that I used to be, not in
the past tense. He said that I am right now. O wretched man! And then he cries
out, Who, who shall deliver me from this body of death? And then I like the answer, the
glorious answer. I thank God through Jesus Christ
our Lord. We are more than conquerors through
Him that have loved us. I thank God through Jesus Christ
our Lord. So then with my mind, that inward
man, that new principle, I serve the law of God. I honor the law
of God as it's fulfilled in Christ Jesus. But with the flesh, oh,
I have this. Rotten flesh. Rotten flesh. Now look at verse 18. He's writing
here to believers. If you be led of the Spirit,
and believers are, and we can read it this way, seeing you
are led by the Spirit of God, seeing you are led and influenced
mightily by the Spirit of God, seeing that be so, you're not
under the law. under the law. Believers are
being sons of God, being begotten of God. Believers are led by
the Spirit of God. Because they are regenerated
by God the Holy Spirit. You hath he quickened who were
dead in trespasses and in sin. And because of that, they are
led to trust the Lord Jesus Christ for all of salvation, for all
of righteousness, for all of sanctification, and having no
confidence in the flesh. Now here's the scripture. Don't
turn. Let me just try to quote it for
you. In Philippians 3.3, he said, We are the true Israel. the Israel
of God, which worship God in the Spirit, that rejoice in Christ
Jesus, and then he says, we have zero confidence in the flesh. And then he goes on to cite all
of his past religious credentials, and then he comes down into that
chapter to verse 7, 8, and 9, and he says, oh, that I may win
Christ and be found in Him, counting everything else, loss, rubbish,
dung is the word. garbage, that I might win Christ,
that I might win Christ and be found in Him. Salvation, whatever it is, I
think I know what it is, but whatever it is, it's in Him.
It's in the Lord Jesus Christ. It's in Christ alone. Oh, that
I may win Christ and be found in Him. Not having my own righteousness,
which is of the law, but that which is through the faithfulness,
the blessed obedience, and the blessed righteousness of the
Lord Jesus Christ alone. That's our hope. So if you be
led of the Spirit, quickened by His grace, quickened by the
Spirit, convicted by the Spirit, made to believe the gospel of
God's grace. Believers are made and they're
led to look to the Lord Jesus Christ for all of forgiveness
of sin, not part, all of forgiveness of our sin. He's the whole hope
of all our salvation and they're led to the Lord Jesus Christ
for shelter, for safety, for sanctification, For security
in Him. As a matter of fact, the Scripture
says, but of Him. Are you in Christ? Who of God? Who of God? You're in Him. Who
of God is made unto us? He's our wisdom. He is our sanctification. He is our redemption. He is our
righteousness. He is our justifying cause of
righteousness before God's holiness, the Lord Jesus Christ alone. As many as be led, we read a
moment ago in Romans 8, 14, as many as be led by the Spirit
of God, they are the sons of God. What does the Spirit of
God lead to? Does it lead to cause us to look
to the flesh? Does it cause us to look to our
experience? Does it cause us to look to our
feelings? Does it cause us to look to ceremony? What does the
Spirit of God cause us to look? For hope and assurance and salvation
in all things. to a person, to a person, the
Lord Jesus Christ. I lift up Him to you, and I tell
you to look to Him. Look to Him. If you be led of
the Spirit, look what it says there, the second part of verse
18, you are not under the law. Is that what it says? You're
not under the law. Therefore, believers are not
under the law as a curse, as a covenant, or as a rule of life. What is the rule of our life?
Christ, the Lord Jesus Christ. Set your heart, if ye be risen
with Him, set your heart, your affection on things above. Christ,
look to Him. That'll regulate your life, looking
to the Lord Jesus Christ. Believers are not under the law,
hear me now, as a curse. Cursed is everyone that continues
not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do
them. You remember the verse over here in chapter 4, verse
21. He said, tell me, oh tell me, you that desire to be under
the law, do you hear what it says? Do you know what it demands? It demands not the best you can
do. It demands perfection in thought, word, deed, and motive. produce that. No one can. That's why he said, tell me,
you that desire to be under the law, do you hear what it says? It says in chapter 3 verse 10,
he quoted, curse it is everyone that continue with not in all
things which are written in the book of the law to do them. My
friend, we're under his grace. Notice what he says over here
in chapter 3, Galatians 3 verse 13, Christ hath redeemed us. from the curse of the law." Now
you want to go back? You want to go back to the law
and pick up some of the law? The Sabbath day? These different
laws? And do part of the law? Christ
has redeemed us from the curse of the law. Christ is our Sabbath. He is our rest. He is our atonement. He is our offering. He is our
high priest. He is our prophet. He is our
king. Christ has redeemed us from the
curse of the law. How did he do that? Being made
a curse for us. God made him sin for us that
we might be made the righteousness of God in him. For it is written,
cursed is everyone that continues, cursed is everyone, cursed is
everyone that hangeth on a tree. And that's why the Lord Jesus
Christ was hung that day on a tree. The law of God declares those
who are guilty were stoned and hung up as a display of their
guilt before God. And the Lord Jesus Christ by
imputation was made guilty in my room and my stead, and He
made an end of sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Oh, bless God, He's
redeemed us from the curse of the law. Mmm, that's sweet, isn't
it? Listen to this scripture, Romans
6, 14. For sin, sin shall not have dominion
over you, for you're not under the law. You got a hold of that? Now he's writing to believers
here. You're not under the law, but you're under something. What's
the second part of that? Under grace. Which way are you going, law
or grace? Well, I'm going a little bit of both. Uh-uh. That ain't
gonna work. Excuse the language. That ain't
gonna fly. It's either all grace or all
works. Can't be law and faith. It can't be Christ and ceremony.
Not at all. It's Christ, Christ, and Christ
all the way. For sin shall not have dominion
over you while you're not under the law. You're under grace. Listen to this scripture, Romans
7, verse 4, "...Wherefore, my brethren, you also are become
dead to the law by the body of Christ, that you should be married
to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we
should bring forth fruit unto God." Preacher, what's your position
on the law? Dead? Dead. Dead to the law. Doesn't it say that over here
somewhere? Didn't we read this over here in Galatians chapter
2? Yes, here it is, verse 19. Galatians 2 verse 19. For I through
the law am dead to the law that I might live unto God. I am crucified
with Christ. Nevertheless, I live, yet not
I, but Christ liveth in me. And the life which I now live
in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God. who loved
me and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate, distort,
confuse the grace of God. For if righteousness comes by
the law, if sanctification comes by the law, then Christ is dead
in vain." That's what he's saying there. Romans 10 verse 4, he
says this, "...for Christ is the end of the law." Do you get a hold of this now? Christ
is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believe it.
You see, to the believer. Paul in those first three or
four verses there in chapter 10, you remember he writes about
those Israelites, those Jews. He said, for they being ignorant
of God's righteousness, and they're going about to establish their
own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness
of God. What is that? What is that righteousness
that justifies the ungodly that's of God? It's that blessed, justifying
righteousness that's given by imputation in the gospel, being
justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is
in the Lord Jesus Christ. No wonder that Paul in Romans
4 when he quotes from old David in Psalm 32, blessed is the man
to whom the Lord would impute, will impute righteousness without
works. Oh, I like that. Now listen to
me. Get a hold of this. If you don't
hear anything else, I want you to hear this. If you be led by
the law as a means of justification, salvation, or sanctification,
you're not led by the Spirit. Get a hold of that now? If he
be led by the law as a means of justification, salvation,
or sanctification, you're not led by the Spirit. That's what
he says. Christ is our sanctification.
We have so great a need, and our need, turn over here to Philippians
4. You know, this is always quoted wrong. You ever notice that in
Philippians chapter 4, verse 19? But my God shall supply all your
need." There's no S on there. I have one single solitary need,
and it's all wrapped up in Christ. But my God shall supply all your
need according to the riches, according to His riches in glory
by the law. Oh, excuse me. I misread that,
by Christ Jesus. I was thinking I was having another
senior moment. I had one of those this morning,
and it was quite embarrassing. It took me three times to tell
my folks to find the book of Mark this morning. I said, turn
to the book of John. And I said, oh, wait a minute,
turn to the book of Matthew. I said, oh, wait a minute, it's
Mark I want. And I tell you, it's quite embarrassing. But they laughed. I hope they
were laughing with me, not at me. But anyhow, if ye be led
by the Spirit, if ye be led of the Spirit, look at verse 18
again, Galatians 5, you're not under the law. You're not under
the law. Look what he says in the first
part of this chapter, chapter 5, verse 1, stands fast therefore
in the liberty, stands fast in this freedom, stands fast in
this liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free. He set us
free. You shall know the truth, and
the truth shall set you free. Whom the Son has set free, He's
free indeed, free from the law. Oh, happy condition. Jesus had
bled, and there is remission, free from the law. Be not entangled
again with the yoke of bondage. That law says, ìRun, run,î one
old songwriter said, ìRun, run, the law demands, but gives me
neither feet nor hands. The gospel bids a sweeter song. It bids me fly and gives me wings.î
ìRun, run,î that law demands. No ability, no ability to satisfy
the law. We've studied this over and over,
"...by the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified in his
sight." The law is the knowledge of sin. The law reveals the wickedness
of what we are, but makes no atonement for sin. It points
to the Lord Jesus Christ. The law points us to the fulfillment
of that sacrifice, the fulfillment of that Day of Atonement, the
fulfillment of all those blood sacrifices. But the blood of
bulls and coats cannot put away sin. But here comes the Lord
Jesus Christ, the great high priest, who didn't bring the
typical sacrifice. He brought His own blood. He
brought His own blood. And by that sacrifice of Himself,
He obtained for His people eternal redemption, eternal deliverance. Now, verse 19. Now here's a gruesome
list. Nothing but absolutely gruesome.
And this is a description of every one of us in this room. This is a description of everyone
on topside of God's green earth. This is what the flesh left to
itself. The only thing this flesh, this
rotten flesh that we have, the only thing that it produces is
sin. Sin. The works of the flesh,
the fruit of the flesh, the product of the flesh is sin. And it's
manifest. This is what the law reveals.
The law exposes our sin, but it does not put away sin. It
exposes us for what we are. It's like, I'll give you this
illustration. I think I've used this before,
but if you walk into a dark room, an old musty dark room, one that
you don't go in very often, maybe down in the corner of the basement,
and you go in there and you flip on the light, It exposes all
the cobwebs and the dirt and all those things, but it makes
no effort to remove them. It just simply exposes all that's
in that room. It's filth. It's debris and all
the garbage that's piled up in the corner. Now, the works of
the flesh, and I'm not even going to read these again, All these
different things that are given to us here, simply to say, you
can go back and you can look up these words and you can do
a word study on all these words and I'll leave that to you. And
you can define them and categorize them and mark them up, well,
I've done that one, haven't done that one. I've done this one,
haven't done, you know, you can go through there and what people
do, here's the danger. Here's what people do when they
try to categorize things. They say, well, you know, I'm
not guilty of that one. And they think by their abstaining or
some way that they're not guilty of these things, they look to
that for a measure of assurance before God, rather than looking
to the Lord Jesus Christ for all of our assurance. They say,
well, you know, I'm a pretty good fella." No, you're not. There's none righteous, no, not
one. There's none that seeks after
God. There's none that understands. There's none that doeth good,
no, not one. This gruesome, horrific list
of what the flesh produces, what that Adam nature left to itself
produces, nothing but S-I-M. That's all it is. All it is. These evils flow out from this
corrupt nature. Romans 7, 18 says this, "...in
the flesh dwelleth no good thing." Zero. Zero. Our Lord said this
in Mark chapter 7. Here's what He said, "...that
which cometh out of the man defiles the man. From within, out of
the heart of man proceeds evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications,
murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness. Sounds like the same list, doesn't
it? An evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evils
come from within and they defile the man. Now, if you're honest
with yourself, as old Ralph Barner used to say, honest folk don't
wind up in hell. But if you're honest with yourself,
You have to look at this list and you have to come to this
conclusion. I am a sinner. Died in the womb. Born in sin. Shapen in iniquity. Come forth from the womb. I don't
know about your children, but before my children could speak
a lie, they would cry a lie. That's their nature. It's rottenness
that's in them through and through. These are the deeds of the flesh. which the holy law of God exposes
and condemns, but cannot make any atonement for. By the deeds
of the law, as I said earlier, shall no flesh be justified in
his sight." In his sight. No wonder it said, don't turn,
let me just read it to you. So then, they that are in the
flesh cannot please God. by the deeds
of the flesh. That's why this fleshly, carnal,
emotional, ceremonial religion will not do. You have to have
a righteousness before God that's perfect. Not one that's produced
or tried to be produced by the flesh. Because all the flesh
produces, my friend, let's shuck right down to the cob, is sin. That's all it is, sin through
and through. Pray God that He would restrain
us by His grace. Now look at verse 21. He says, "...envy, murders, drunkenness,
revelings, and such like, of which I tell you before, as I
have told you in the past, they which do such things, those who
practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."
But wait a minute now, preacher. You just told me that I'm guilty
of all those things. Does that mean I'm not going
to inherit the kingdom of God based upon the foundation of
the flesh and the deeds of the flesh? Absolutely not. Standing on that ground is a
ground of condemnation. Because the law says, guilty,
guilty, guilty, let every mouth be stopped and all the world
become guilty before God. Those who are guilty of such
things shall not enter the kingdom of God. We read of this, those
who stand in their guilt of their flesh and their sin. The Lord
says this, He will by no means clear the guilty. Who are these
people that that he describes here, who are these people that
will not inherit the kingdom of God? It's those who stand
upon the ground and the deeds of the flesh. They shall not
inherit the kingdom of God. These people that are described
here are unbelievers. Unbelievers. Romans 8.13 says,
for if you live after the flesh, you'll die. You'll die. If you
try to approach God upon the deeds of the flesh, You'll die,
you'll die, and die and die and die. Those whose whole life is
taken up with the flesh, this corrupt nature, having never
been brought to true faith in Christ. Therefore, there's no
forgiveness of sin. Having never been brought to
true repentance, therefore, there's no broken heart over sin. Never
being justified in the Lord Jesus Christ, therefore, having no
righteousness before God. To stand in the deed of the flesh
is to hear Him say, Depart from Me, I never knew you, you workers
of iniquity." Now, wait a minute. Lord, we preached in Your name.
We've done many wonderful works in Your name. That's what they
said. We've cast out devils in Your name. Depart from me, I
never, I never knew you, workers of iniquity." You see, they were
standing upon the ground of what they did in the flesh. And it's
nothing but sin. That's the point. That's the
point. You stand upon that ground and
you'll not inherit the kingdom of God. No justifying righteousness
before God. Now, listen to this. And Paul
said, "...and such were some of you." Let's turn and read
that. Behind it, if you will, 1 Corinthians
6. You see, the believer has an
eternal inheritance. We read that a moment ago. Heirs
of God and joint heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ. I want you
to find 1 Corinthians 6. We've been made heirs of God
and joint heirs with Christ. We have an eternal inheritance
that's incorruptible, that's undefiled, that faith not away,
that's reserved in heaven for you. All this inheritance, my
friend, is the inheritance of grace. It's not the inheritance
that we've earned with the flesh. The wages of sin is, what is
it? Death. The gift of God is eternal
life. Now look at this carefully. This
is 1 Corinthians chapter 6. Look at verse 9, Know ye not
that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? The
unrighteous shall not. Be not deceived, fornicators,
idolaters, adulterers, feminine, abusers of themselves with mankind,
thieves, covetous, drunkenness, rebels, rebellers, extortioners
shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Same message, isn't it?
Same message. But now, here's the good news. Look at verse 11, And such were
some of you. That's all of us by nature, that's
what we are. Sinners, through and through.
But, oh that's a big word in scripture. But God, you read
Ephesians chapter 1, Ephesians chapter 2, excuse me, talks about
everything we are by nature, children of wrath, even as others.
And then it says, but God, who is rich in mercy, For His great
love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sin, He's
quickened us together by His grace. But such were some of
you, and such were some of you, but, but God, He's made us to
differ. He said, but God, you're washed.
You're washed. What are you washed in? The blood
of Christ. The blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
God's Son cleanses us from all sin. He says, you're washed.
He says, you're sanctified. That's the sanctifying work of
God the Holy Spirit making us new creatures in Christ Jesus.
That's the new birth. That's regeneration. That's the
implantation of that new man in Christ Jesus. You're sanctified
and you're justified. You're justified, cleared from
all guilt, justified freely by His grace, justified, sanctified,
washed in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit
of God." Oh, I tell you, He's made us
heirs of God. We have an eternal inheritance
of grace based upon His dying and doing, based upon His righteousness,
not this flesh, not what I do before salvation or after salvation. Salvation is always dependent,
determined, and accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ and
applied by Him, always. And he said, God forbid I should
glory save in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, verse
22. And my time is gone, but verse
22. Here's the fruit. Here's the
fruit of the Spirit. Oh, this is sweet. The fruit
of the Spirit. God the Holy Spirit. And notice
it's singular. It's singular. Nine things he
mentions here. Love, joy, peace. long-suffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith. These things are the gift of
God, the fruit of the Spirit, meekness, temperance. Against
such there is no charge. Against believers there is no
charge. Against believers there is therefore
now no condemnation. Who shall lay anything to the
charge of God to let? Those who walk in the Spirit
and live in the Spirit, who are led by the Spirit, bear the fruit
of the Spirit. And the fruit of the Spirit is
manifest in their life because of the indwelling of the Spirit
of God. He mentions these things here. Let's go over them just
briefly. Love. Our Lord said, By this shall
all men know that you are my disciples, that you love one
another. The love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts.
And this is not talking about natural affection. This is talking
about that spiritual love for God and His Word. He says in
1 Corinthians chapter 13, without this you'll never enter the kingdom
of God, without this love of God given unto you in Christ
Jesus. Don't turn, let me just read
just a portion of that to you. He said, the gift of prophecy and understand
all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have faith so I
could remove mountains and have not love, I'm nothing. Though
I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my
body to be burned and have not love, I'm nothing. You see this love of God, oh
I tell you how precious this love of God is. It's a gift.
We love Him. Why do we love Him? He first
loved us. You're ahead of me there. We
love Him. because He first loved us. Herein
is love, not that we love God, but that He loved us, and He
sent His Son to be the sacrifice for our sin. And then He mentioned
joy. Believers rejoice always in the
Lord Jesus Christ. And then He mentions peace, peace.
Oh, we have peace with God. How do we have peace with God?
Through the Lord Jesus Christ. He made peace for us with His
own blood. And then He talks about longsuffering.
That's waiting on the Lord. He talks about gentleness and
kindness, gentleness and kindness. He talks about faithfulness or
faith, which is a gift of God. The faith of God, the elect acknowledges
the truth. Titus 1.1. He talks about meekness,
humility of mind, a broken heart. He's nigh them of a broken heart.
He saved us such as be of a contrite spirit. And then he mentioned
temperance, moderation, self-control, eating and drinking. Now listen
to me. The fruit of the Spirit is altogether
opposite to the fruit of the flesh. It's not something produced
by us, but something that is produced by God the Holy Spirit,
and it is a result of the new birth. It's God which worketh
in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. It's found
in every believer to some degree or the other, some more, some
less, various degrees, but it's found in every believer. Every
believer loves to one degree or another. They have joy to
one degree or another, but this fruit of the Spirit is found
in every believer. The fruit of the Spirit is in
opposition to the works of the flesh. Now, I'm going to give
this to you and quit. And we'll have to pick up there
next week. Now, listen to this. Love, this love of God that shed
abroad in our hearts, The spiritual love is opposed to hatred and
enmity. It's the opposite of those two
things, is it not? Joy is opposed to strife and
sedition. You see, they war against one
another. Joy and peace, peace is opposed to envying, reveling,
and seditions. You see how they're contrary.
Faith is opposed to heresies, witchcraft, and idolatry. Temperance
is opposed to drunkenness, uncleanness, and mischievousness. Meekness
is the opposite of strife, wrath, emulation, jealousy, and murder."
You see, these things are contrary one to the other. Now, let me
give you this, and I'll quit. "...against such," he says there,
you see verse 23? "...against such there is no
law." Now, what's he saying there? I looked at that a long time.
Against such there is no law." Now, who's he talking about?
He's talking about believers. Against such there is no condemnation. Against such there is no chart,
no law. The law of God has no claim on
them. I'm crucified with Christ. Now,
I close with this. I turn to Romans 8. The believer has fully honored
the law of God in Christ. Do we make void the law of God
through faith? Paul said, God forbid. No, we
establish the law. We honor the law. How? By my
doing? No, His. The Lord Jesus. In every precept of that law,
not just the ten, I mean 800 precepts of that law. Someone
said there's 800 precepts of that law. He kept every one,
every jot and tittle It says in Isaiah 42, 21, He magnified
the law. He honored the law for us. That's
my obedience before God, Christ, the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore,
we read this, Romans 8, verse 31, If God be for us, who can
be against us? He that spared not His own Son,
but delivered Him up for us all, all the elect, how shall He not
with Him also freely give us all things? Freely. Freely. Believers are not motivated by
law. They're motivated by love. The
love of Christ constrains us. Who shall anything to the charge
of God delect? Against such there is no charge. The law has no claim on me. I'm
dead. It's already condemned me, executed
me. It is God that justifieth. Who
is He that condemneth? It's Christ that died. God's
justice can't twice demand, first at my bleeding Charity's hand
and then again at mine. It is, who is he that condemneth
this Christ that died, yea, rather that is risen again? Who is even
at the right hand of God? It seems like he's climbing a
ladder. He just gets higher and higher with each rung. Who also
maketh intercession for us? Now, who can separate us from
the love of Christ? Nothing. Nothing. Nothing can
separate us from the love of God which is in the Lord Jesus
Christ. Well, I'll leave you with that
and I pray the Lord will bless those words and you you think
upon you think upon these things and ask God to give you a
