The Bible teaches that eternal life is a gift from God through Jesus Christ and comes from knowing Him.
According to Scripture, eternal life is fundamentally knowing God and Jesus Christ whom He sent (John 17:3). It is not something earned through good works or adherence to the law but is offered as a gift of grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). Jesus emphasized that the way to inherit eternal life is through dependence on Him, as stated in Luke 18:18-27, where He reveals the necessity of following Him and recognizing our inability to achieve righteousness apart from God.
John 17:3, Ephesians 2:8-9, Luke 18:18-27
God's law must be honored because it reflects His holiness and justice, which are essential for salvation.
In Luke 18, Jesus reminds the young ruler of the commandments, emphasizing the importance of God’s law. God's law serves to reveal His character and standards of holiness. For anyone to inherit eternal life, they must fulfill these divine requirements perfectly, which is something no man can achieve due to the fall of Adam (Romans 3:23). This inability accentuates the necessity of Christ, who perfectly honored the law on our behalf, thus validating the importance of God's law in the salvation process.
Luke 18:20, Romans 3:23
It is impossible for man to save himself because all have sinned and cannot meet God's perfect standards.
Jesus articulated the impossibility of salvation through human effort when He said that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God (Luke 18:25). This metaphor highlights humanity's inherent inability to fulfill the requirements for salvation, which include obeying the law, satisfying God’s justice, and reconciling enmity with God. As Paul explains in Romans 7, true understanding of the law reveals our sinful nature and inability to achieve righteousness on our own, thereby pointing us to the need for divine intervention through Jesus Christ.
