Why is compassion important for Christians?

Answered in 30 sources

Compassion is vital for Christians as it reflects God's love and mercy, urging believers to respond to others' needs as God has responded to theirs.

Compassion is a significant characteristic for Christians because it mirrors the very nature of God. In 1 John 4:10, we see that God's love is foundational to our understanding and practice of love towards others. As God has shown His compassion to us—especially in our unworthiness as sinners (Romans 5:8)—we are called to extend that same compassion to those around us. This involves not just feeling pity but taking actionable steps to alleviate suffering and serve others, following Christ's example. In doing so, believers manifest their faith and obedience to God, building a loving community that reflects the character of Christ.
