The Bible teaches that eternal life is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ.
According to scripture, eternal life is not something we can earn by our works but is a gift from God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In John 3:16, we see that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. This contrasts with the attempts of man, such as the lawyer in Luke 10, who sought to justify himself through his works. True understanding of eternal life acknowledges that it is granted through recognizing our inability to meet God's standards and accepting Christ's sacrificial atonement.

Salvation is by grace, as the Bible reveals that we cannot achieve it through our own works.
Scripture clearly articulates that salvation is by grace rather than works. Ephesians 2:8-9 states that by grace we have been saved through faith, and that not of ourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. This aligns with the message in Romans 8:3, where we learn that the law is unable to save due to our weakness; thus, God sent His Son to fulfill the law's demands on our behalf. Recognizing our inability to earn salvation is crucial in understanding that it indeed comes solely as a gift from God, empowering us to have faith in Christ’s accomplishment.
Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 8:3
Understanding the law helps us recognize our inability to save ourselves and points us to Christ.
The law serves a vital purpose in the economy of salvation by revealing God's holiness and our fallen state. It acts as a schoolmaster, teaching us that we cannot achieve righteousness by our efforts (Galatians 3:24). This is essential for understanding the need for a Savior. As mentioned in Romans 3:20, 'by the law is the knowledge of sin.' The law shows us our shortcomings and leads us to cast ourselves upon Christ for mercy. Without recognizing the law's demands and our failure to meet them, we might mistakenly believe we can secure our own salvation.
Galatians 3:24, Romans 3:20
To inherit eternal life, one must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
Eternal life is inherited through faith in Jesus Christ, not by one's own works. As illustrated in Luke 10, when the lawyer asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus directed him to the law, revealing the impossibility of keeping it perfectly (Luke 10:26-28). Instead of relying on his merit, the lawyer needed to understand that true salvation comes from casting himself upon Christ and trusting in His finished work. As Paul reminds us in Romans 10:9-10, if we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved.
