Christ In The Psalms
What does the Bible say about the law of the Lord?

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul and bringing wisdom.

According to Psalm 19, the law of the Lord is described as perfect, meaning it fulfills its intended purpose of revealing sin and guiding us towards righteousness. It converts the soul, showing individuals their transgressions and leading them to repentance and faith. The testimony of the Lord makes the simple wise, providing knowledge that aligns with God's will. These valuable truths remind us that God's law, rather than being restrictive, is a source of joy and clarity in our lives.

Psalm 19:7-9

How do we know the judgments of God are righteous?

The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether, as evidenced by the cross of Christ.

Psalm 19 clearly states that the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. This truth is essential for believers, as it assures us that God's justice is absolute and unyielding. The ultimate demonstration of this righteousness is seen in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on Calvary, where God judged sin perfectly and according to His justice. Therefore, believers can take comfort in knowing that sin does not go unpunished, and because Christ bore our sins, we are found innocent. This reinforces our faith in God's unchanging character and the reliability of His judgments.

Psalm 19:9, Romans 1:18-20

Why is understanding sin important for Christians?

Understanding sin is crucial for recognizing our need for redemption and spiritual growth.

The law of the Lord serves to reveal our sinfulness, which is a vital step for every Christian seeking to grow in faith. Psalm 19 highlights the perfect nature of the law in converting the soul and enlightening the eyes. By understanding our errors and being confronted with God's standards, believers are led to recognize their reliance on Christ's redemptive work. This acknowledgment fosters deeper repentance and a greater appreciation for God's grace, showing us that the more we understand our sin, the more we recognize our need for a Savior.

Psalm 19:12-13, Romans 7:9-11

How does the fear of the Lord impact a believer's life?

The fear of the Lord is clean and endures forever, guiding believers in righteousness.

The fear of the Lord is described in Psalm 19 as clean and enduring forever. This reverence for God leads believers to live in a way that honors His commands, resulting in a life marked by righteousness and purity. It serves as a foundational attitude that influences our actions and thoughts. Importantly, when a believer truly fears the Lord, they will find strength and consistency in their faith, allowing them to resist sin and uphold God's standards. This fear generates a respect for God's sovereignty and leads to a profound love for His law and judgments.

Psalm 19:9, Proverbs 9:10, Isaiah 33:6

Why is the law of the Lord desirable for Christians?

The law of the Lord offers wisdom and fulfillment, making it more desirable than gold.

The psalmist expresses in Psalm 19 that the law of the Lord is to be desired more than gold, even fine gold, and is sweeter than honey. For Christians, this reflects the incredible value and richness of God’s words and commandments. Understanding the law leads to wisdom that surpasses human knowledge, allowing believers to navigate life’s complexities with divine insight. The law also brings a sense of fulfillment as it governs a believer’s life with clarity and purpose. Therefore, it is not only a guideline but a source of joy and a continual blessing for those who embrace it wholeheartedly.

Psalm 19. This is a little bit
different psalm from those that we have been looking at in the sense
that this is not a prayer in the sense that the others have
been, I believe, the prayers of Christ, so much so as this
is an observation that has been given unto David concerning who
the Lord is. And surely we still believe these
are the words of Christ nonetheless, but in a different manner in
which we've looked at some in the last few weeks here. And
so Psalm 19, says, The heavens declare the
glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork. Day unto
day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. There is no speech nor language
where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out throughout
all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them
hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, which is as a bridegroom
coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to
run a race. His going forth is from the end
of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it, and there
is nothing hid from the heat thereof. The law of the Lord
is perfect, converting the soul. The testimony of the Lord is
sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are
right. rejoicing the heart, the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever. The judgments of the Lord are
true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than
gold, yea, than much fine gold, sweeter also than honey and the
honeycomb. Moreover, by them is thy servant
warned, and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can
understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from
presumptuous sins. Let them not have dominion over
me. Then shall I be upright, and
thou shalt be innocent from the great transgression. Let the
words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in
thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer." Now, the heavens declare the
glory of God, and the firmament showeth His handiwork. All that one has to do in order
to know God has created the heavens and the earth that He rules and
reigns over that dominion is to just look around you. And
the only reason that men don't see and understand that very
truth is because they will not. They desire not. They desire
not to have this one to rule over them. David said, the fool
has said in his heart, there is no God. And as we have said
many times, what that literally means, what he said was, there
is no God for me. Because all men know that there
is a God. Now there are many men that say
there is no God. They surely do. But all men in
the right situation will call out, to one to help them in a
time of trouble. That's just the way that it is
because God made men in that way. And so Paul very clearly
said the same thing over in Romans. I mean, he could have quoted
this psalm here, the beginning of this psalm. He said, For the wrath of God, this is
in Romans 1 verse 18, says, for the wrath of God is revealed
from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who
hold the truth in unrighteousness. Now he said that it has all been
revealed, it has been set forth out there. Because that which
may be known of God is manifest in them, for God hath showed
it unto them. Now that's pretty plain, is it
not? I mean, it doesn't say some men, it says all men. And that's
the reason, as he goes on to say, for the invisible things
of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen. That
is, from the creation men can clearly see that God is God. They clearly see that. I mean,
you know, how foolish is it? that men would look around them
and see the intricacies of the world and say it all just happened. How foolish is that? I mean,
really, how stupid is that? I mean, you don't look at a watch
on a man's arm and say, you know, that watch just came to be one
day. Something happened and all of
a sudden, there's the watch. Now you know that somebody took
that and they made those things. But yet men in their great wisdom
and their rebellion against God, they will say, all this which
is far more intricate than any watch ever was, they will say,
oh well, it just happened. Big bang, all of a sudden. What
nothing was, now something is. I mean, you know, that's really
ridiculous. I mean, it's really a sign of
mental illness. You know, people want to talk
about scientific. How unscientific is such a concept,
is that? You know, that's science falsely
so called, is it not, to think that something can just happen?
Something can't just happen, and it hasn't just happened.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world
are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made."
They understand it. They know it. They see it. They
understand it. Even his eternal power and Godhead. So that they are without excuse. Now, you know, a lot of times
you'll hear people moaning and carrying on, well, you know,
they say, oh, it's terrible, you know, all these people that
are going to perish and going to be destroyed in hell because
they never heard the gospel. Well, whether they ever heard
the gospel or not, that's not the question. Because they're without excuse
to start with. Men aren't destroyed because
they haven't heard the gospel. Men are destroyed because they're
in rebellion against God. They have gone contrary to the
way of God. The heavens declare the glory
of God. So it's evident. It's right out
here in front of us. The firmament showeth His handiwork. Now that word firmament means
An expanse. And most times in Scriptures
when you see the word firmament, it appears seventeen times in
the Old Testament. It means the heavens. It means
the expanse that you can see. That is the firmament. The Scripture
says that the Lord made a firmament. and in the midst of the waters.
Now, we don't have time to get into this, but you know, when
you stop and you look at the creation of Ed Harris's design,
it says that the Lord made a firmament, and the firmament separated the
waters that were above the firmament from the waters that were below
the firmament. Now, that's an amazing thing, is it not? Because
the firmament is in the midst of the waters is what it says.
Now I'll just let you think about that for a little bit. That sometimes
blows my mind when I go back and I read that and I think about
that for a minute. I don't understand that. I don't
have an explanation. I've read a lot of wise people,
you know, supposedly they give all these different explanations
and what not of what that is, but it's a mystery. But one thing
is certain, that regardless of how that is, we do know this,
we can see what we can see. And that's what the psalmist
says here. It doesn't matter about the mysteries that you
can't solve. Now people always get hung up on the stuff they
can't know, don't they? I mean, you know, people will
spend hours trying to figure out where Cain got his wife,
and all that kind of stuff. And foolish things that you can't
have, I mean, it's just foolish to even think about them. The
things you can see, what can you see? And the things that
you see bear witness against you as those that do not worship
in spirit and truth the great Creator. The firmament, the heavens
show His handiwork, day unto day utter His speech. That is,
every day that we walk in the earth, it's telling us God created
the heavens and the earth. These things are the work of
His hands. Worship Him. It's telling us
day unto day of His speech. It's saying it. Night unto night,
showeth knowledge. When you look and you see the
stars in the heavens and you think of the vastness of that
that you can see, let alone what you can't see, that as they get
these powerful telescopes and they go out in these spaceships
and stuff, or satellites, whatever you call them, going out into
the deep parts of space, and they see more and more and all
these things, and they say, Pam, we can't even find the end of
this. Well, there is an end of it. Men aren't able to see it
because of this expanse. You see, he declares the glory
of God, but God is over all these things and He holds it all in
His hands. And it is that which night unto
night showeth knowledge. Every time a man looks at the
stars, these things are revealed. There is no speech nor language
where their voice is not heard. There is not a tribe, a kindred,
a tongue on the face of the earth that cannot look at the exact
same things that we see and everybody else sees, and that testifies
to the glory of God, the majesty of the Creator. But what have
men done? The Scripture says, when they
knew God... See, when the heathen tribes
and all these peoples in all these various places, when they
knew God, the Scripture says, when they could see Him, they
could see this, what did they do? They worshipped and served
the creature more than the Creator. Because he goes on to say here,
I'm going to kind of skip ahead, he says, he has set a tabernacle
for the Son. Now rather than men falling down
and worshipping the God who made the Son, what did they do? They
worshipped the Son. They worship the sun, you see.
They worship the things. They worship the animals. They
worship the trees. Not much different than today,
is it? I mean, isn't that really what our culture and society
has come to? I mean, it is to worship the
things of the earth, the humanity of the earth. See, human beings
are of such great value. And the Lord told us to value
human life. Surely they are, but brethren,
human life is just a blip in the creation of God. I mean,
we are no great thing except as God has been pleased to give
us what He has given us. There is no place where the voice
of the creation is not heard testifying to the glory of God.
Their line has gone out through all the earth. and their words
to the end of the world. Now the line has gone out, that
has to do. You know, when you are building
a building, you only really need to know two things, and that
is you have got to keep it level, which is the line, and you have
got to keep it plumb. And the Lord has given us both.
He has given us the line. He has set the line in the earth.
He said this is the way it is. And He's given us the plumb,
which is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the manager by which He
determines. See, there's only one line that's
plumb. You can have something that's
pretty close to plumb. But if you go out far enough,
it will be off. Just ask the people over there at the Leaning
Tower of Pisa, you know. I mean, it started off, it wasn't
much off, so I didn't worry about it. And as time went on, now
they're figuring, well, eventually the thing's going to collapse.
Why? Because the building can't stand, ultimately, that's not
plumb. And so the Lord has sent out
His line throughout all the earth and their words to the end of
the world. And then He had set a tabernacle
for the sun. He had put the sun in the heavens
to rule. Now you know, again, coming back
to the thing about the sun in the heavens, and this is the
thing that I've never heard a lot of people comment about this,
but the Lord said, let there be light. But it was on the third
day that He created the sun. So people, you know, the scientists
tell us, well, our source of light is the sun. That's not
true. Light exists without the sun.
The sun is not our source of light. Because the Lord made
the light before He made the sun. So the sun has light because
the Lord gave it to it, not vice versa. And so it is that even
though He set the tabernacle for the Son, which is a bridegroom
coming out of His chamber and rejoiceth as a strong man to
run a race, He comes every morning out of His chamber and He goes
across the sky and is unhindered and He goes down. Now, you know,
I'm not going to get into the flat earth Of course, there are
some people, and I'm always open to listen to what somebody has
to say, and I don't claim to know everything, but there are
people that believe the earth is flat and that the sun revolves
around the earth. Now, I will say this. And you
can laugh if you want to, but if you're going to consider that
the Bible is a scientific textbook, which I do not, but if you were
to consider that the Bible is a scientific textbook and you
were to consider how the solar system and the earth is strictly
from what the Bible says, then you could conclude most assuredly
that that is a true thing, that the sun does revolve around earth. Now, again, that's a foolish
argument, really, because the Bible wasn't given to us to define
scientific truths. It was given to us to reveal
the glory of God. And the one thing we do know
is that the sun rises and sets. And even the greatest of scientists
will speak of the rising of the sun and the setting of the sun,
even though according to science as we see it today, as we understand
it, that is not really technically correct, is it? I mean, because
the earth rotates and the sun is not moving according to science. And again, I'm just throwing
that out there for you to think, but according to what David's
saying here, he's saying that the rising and setting of the
sun, however that occurs, is because the Lord sent it forth
as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber with joy every morning
and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. You know, when
guys go to the Olympics and they've trained for years to get ready
to run in that race, they're not saying, oh man, I wish I
wasn't here, are they? No, they're right there saying,
man, all my time has been spent here getting ready for this and
I'm ready to run this race. And the son is in the same way.
Why? Because the Lord sent it. Nothing
can stop it. You can't stop seed, dime and
harvest. You can't stop winter and summer. You can't stop the sun from moving
in the sky. You can't do it. It won't happen.
Because the Lord sent it. Now when He gets ready to cause
it to stop, it will stop. His going forth is from the end
of the heaven and His circuit unto the ends of it. That is,
as far as you can see over there, As far as you can see over there,
that's where the sun goes. It goes across the sky. It covers
it all. And nothing, there's nothing
hid from the heat thereof. Boy, anybody that's ever worked
in a tobacco patch or a watermelon patch knows that's the truth.
There's nowhere to hide when you're out in the sun. working around some trees or
whatever, you can get in the shade tree and get it, but when
you're out in the sun, you can't be hid from the heat. You're
going to feel the heat of it. And what does that do? Again,
it's just the testimony that God has made these things. It cannot be escaped. That's
what He's saying. That's the whole thing of what
He's saying. You cannot escape the testimony that God has created
all of these things. Then he kind of shifts gears
here because he's moving from that which is natural, that men
cannot deny, to that which men cannot see apart from the grace
of God. Now every man can see the creation,
can he not? But every man cannot see and
rejoice in that which he says here. For he says the law of
the Lord is perfect. Converting the soul. Now, Brother
Al's been doing a good job going through the Ten Commandments.
Of course, that's not the law, but it is law. It is the law in the sense that
it is a condensed version of the law. But that's not the whole
law. That's not the whole testimony of God to men. But it is that
which He gave to Israel. The law of the Lord is perfect.
But you see, men think that the law isn't bad. I mean, it's good
for you. It's good for me as long as it's
protecting me from you. But whenever I get ready to do
something, then you know it's not a good thing. I want to do
what I want to do. I want to kind of set that aside. I'm not real concerned about
it. Because you see, every thief hates a thief. Isn't that true? I mean, there's not a thief.
I mean, a guy that's the biggest thief on earth, the thing he
hates worse than anything is for somebody to steal something
from him. You know, he shows the work of
the law written in his heart, does he not? But you see, the
law of the Lord is perfect because it performs its work. It performs
exactly what the Lord sent it to do, and that is to reveal
sin. And it reveals sin even among
those who are the greatest of those who are in rebellion against
God, but they just don't see it. They can't understand it.
They can't grasp it. But you see, the work of God
is to show His people the truth of God in the inward part. And
that's what He says here, the law of the Lord is perfect. Converting
the soul. Because that's the perfect work
of the law. It's to show us our sin. I mean,
that's what Paul said. He says, I was alive without
the law once. Now, what did he mean? He was
a Pharisee, so there was never a day in his life when he wasn't
confronted with the Ten Commandments and the Bible and knew what the
Word of God was in that sense. But he says, when the commandment
came, that is, when it was revealed to me what the law really was,
he said, sin revived and I died. I saw what sin was then. And
it killed me. It slew me. It brought me down
on my face. And so the law of the Lord is
perfect. That is, it completes a perfect
work, converting the soul. The testimony of the Lord is
sure. Making wise the simple. Now, it doesn't make wise the complex. The Lord said that
He hid the things of God from the wise and proved it and revealed
them unto babes. But you see, the law of the Lord
makes wise the simple. That is, those that don't know
any better. I mean, you know, those that don't know any better
than to believe the Lord. because they have been made so
by the grace of God. They are made wise. Even as the Lord said, be as
wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Because you see, the
Word of God working in the souls of God's people is that which
they desire. And their wisdom is that which
comes from the Word of God. They are not seeking counsel
of men. to know what the truth of God is. They are seeking the
Lord Himself, the truth of God. The statutes of the Lord are
right, rejoicing the heart. See, one of the works of the Spirit
of God in the people of God is to cause them to ratify the law
of God. Now, the Lord doesn't need you
to ratify His law in order for it to be true and right and good. It doesn't matter if anybody
agrees with it or not, it's still just right and good. But the
work of the Lord in the hearts of His people causes them to
ratify it. They say, it is good. I do love
the way of the Lord. It is a right thing. See, the
people of God can't say, we want to serve God, but we don't want
to do what He says. That's not the work of the Spirit
in a man, is it? To cause him to say, well, the Lord is alright, but I'm
going to go my way. No. The work of God in the soul
of a man causes him to say the law of God is perfect, it's pure,
it's right. The statutes of the Lord are
right rejoicing the heart. Oh, the Word of God is that which
brings joy to the hearts of God's people. The commandment of the
Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. It is a purifying work,
is it not? It causes us to see ourselves
for what we are. Because you know, until a man
sees what he is by nature, he can't really see, can he? I mean,
as long as we go through life looking at what other people
need to do to perfect themselves, we can't see what we need to
do, what needs to happen to us. I mean, I'm convinced of this,
that the Lord brings us into the presence of one another,
not in order that we might correct one another, but that we might
see ourselves for what we are. Because you know, it's easy.
You can get along with people as long as you're not around
people. Isn't that right? I mean, have you ever had a disagreement
with somebody when you were by yourself? It's impossible. The only time
you can have a disagreement is when you're with somebody. But
what was the cause of the disagreement? Now, some would say, oh, it was
their fault. No, most of the time it's both
of you's fault. You know, there's enough thought
to go around this. Very seldom ever all one or the
other. Because of the fact that the
Lord causes the Word of God to bear upon our heart to show us
what we are. You don't need to know what somebody
else is. If the Lord is working in them,
they are already quite aware of it. How corrupt they are in
the depths of their soul. The statutes of the Lord are
right. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the
eyes. Oh, when we read the Word of
God, does it not bring shame to us when we see what the Lord
said and how far short of it we fall? I mean, does that not
cause us to see? Of course it does, if we've been
given eyes to see. The fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever. Fear of the Lord is clean. You
know if something is clean, it is clean. There is no such thing
as something being almost clean. You know that is what most of
the stuff that we clean, of course when I clean something, it is
close to clean. If you do not look too close
in the cracks and crevices and stuff, you know, I have cleaned
it. But clean is clean. If something's clean, it doesn't
make a difference. You could have a thousand inspectors
inspect something that's clean, and you know whatever one of
them is going to come to the same conclusion. This is clean. Well,
the fear of the Lord is clean. There's nothing mixed with it.
You know, when men walk according to the fear of God, they're not
walking according to the fear of men. If they're walking in
fear of God, that's all that matters. I mean, Daniel is a
good example of that. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
they were good examples of that. As the Lord worked in them, the
fear of God. They feared God. It didn't matter if they were
going to be cast into the fire of fire. They weren't going to
deny the Lord. Fear of the Lord is pure. It's
clean. Enduring forever. Because if
the Lord causes a man to fear Him today, He'll cause them to
fear Him tomorrow. See, it's not that men fear God.
Now, sometimes men get fearful. See, sometimes, you know, they'll
go to what they call a revival meeting. or something. And the preacher,
he'll preach hell hot and heaven high and cause his shirt tails
to run up and down their back like a wind of shade. And you
know, they'll get fearful and they'll get stirred up and they'll
cry out to the Lord or whatever. But then later on, when all that's
died down, they kind of sometimes forget about that, don't they?
And when somebody's not there to keep that fearfulness stirred
up in them, The fear of God is not there. But see, when the
fear of God is in a man, those things are immaterial.
You know, the Lord uses some of those things. Now, don't get
me wrong. Sometimes the Lord uses some of those things to
instigate His people. But those things themselves are
not that which is what He is speaking of here. The fear of
the Lord is clean. and righteous altogether, it
endures forever. It doesn't stop. It doesn't end. The judgments of the Lord are
true and righteous altogether. That which the Lord sets out
is altogether true in that He will not abandon His justice. Any man that wonders whether
or not God will set justice aside, all he has to do is look at Calvary.
And the Lord Jesus Christ hanging on Calvary's cross, and he can
be sure that God will be just. He will be just. He will judge
sin. He will destroy the sinner. He
will do that. And the cross of Christ shows
that to be true. Because if He spared not His
own Son, How will He spare? Where will the wicked appear
before Him? Where will those who are outside
of Christ be? His judgments are true and righteous
altogether. Who can question it? Who can
say, well, Lord, you know, You didn't do right. Now that's why
a lot of times, you know, when you preach the sovereignty of
God, You preach that the Lord has an elect people which he
loved from before the foundation of the world. There are sometimes
people that will say, well, that's not just, that's not right, that's
not fair, that's not good. But dear brethren, who are we
to accuse God? I mean, can a man say to God
that's not righteous? Can a man accuse God of anything? If the Lord says He's going to
do something, is it not right because He said it? Not because
we judged it to be right. The judgments of the Lord are
true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than
gold. There you go, Brother Al. Desired. The judgments of the Lord are
desired. We love the judgment of God if
we have a right understanding of what Christ has done on behalf
of His people. I am thankful that God's judgments
are true, because if He judged Christ for our sin, then we cannot
be held accountable for them. If they were taken away in Christ,
then they cannot be brought back upon us. Dear brethren, that's
our hope. We don't have any other hope.
Because if we think Christ paid for some of our sins, but we've
still got to answer for some, if you've got to answer for one
sin, you're in trouble. What are you going to do about
it? Because God's judgment, it is absolute. The soul that sinneth
shall die. And if there's one sin, that
you have that's not covered in the blood of Christ, you will
perish. That's all there is to it. No
other way. These are to be desired more
than gold, because what's gold really? I mean, gold is a thing
that men desire, but have you ever thought about it? Why is
gold so desirable? That always has been. Men have
desired gold. I mean, it's like, oh man, there
it is. Well, I believe God just put
that in men. I think it's just kind of a natural
thing that men love gold. I don't know why. It's just something
that they're attracted to. But men, some more than others.
You know, gold is a precious thing. But he said this is more
to be desired than gold, yea, than much fine gold. Not just
an old nugget of gold that you dug up out of the ground with impurities and stuff
stuck on it and what not, but fine gold. That is gold that
has been purified. And it is beautiful. Sweeter also than honey and the
honeycomb. Do you know of anything sweeter
than honey? I mean there may be, I don't know how you measure
sweetness, but I mean honey is pretty sweet, I'll say that.
And the honeycomb, I remember my daddy, he used to like to
get honey with the honeycomb and he would eat that honeycomb. I never really cared that much
for the honeycomb, but the idea here is that you got the whole
thing, see. I mean, you don't just have the
honey that you got out of the comb, but you've got the whole
thing. I mean, there it is, and it's sweeter than honey and the
honeycomb. Moreover, by them is thy servant
warned. What are we warned of? To flee
from the wrath to come. Remember when the Pharisees came
to John and he said, O generation of vipers, who have warned thee
to flee from the wrath to come? He said, all you're doing is
just coming out here because you think it's some big religious
deal. You saw the signs posted up down
on the lamp post that said we were having a meeting down here
by the river and it was a Holy Ghost revival and you showed
up to see what was going to happen. He said, who's told you to flee
from the wrath to come? But you see, by the Word of God,
the children of God are warned to flee from the wrath to come.
It's burnt within our soul. We can't help it. Nobody has
to cause us in the morning to wake up and say, well, you need
to fear God today. You need to tremble before Him.
No, He teaches us that through His Word, by them as our servant
warned. Now listen to this, and in keeping
of them there is great reward. Now a lot of people read that
verse like this, and if you keep the Word of God, you will one
day be rewarded. But that's not what it says,
is it? It says, in the keeping of them there is great reward. See, we're not waiting for a
reward for what we've done. No, the keeping of the things
of God, the holding of them dear to our bosom, the walking in
the promises of God, there is great reward here. We have the
reward. This is the reward. The children
of God are rewarded in the present time by the grace of God, causing
them to love the things of God and to fear Him. That is, there
is great reward there. In the keeping of them there
is great reward. Who can understand his errors? Who can know his
own mind? Brother Al read that a moment
ago. Who can know his heart? You know, people talk about that
sometimes. Well, if I know my own heart.
You ever heard anybody say that? Well, you don't. If you know
your own heart, you know that you aren't deceitful and desperately
wicked. You know you better not trust
your heart. Oh, trust your heart. Go with your gut. No, don't do that. Do not do
that. Do not go with what you think
is right. There is a way which seemeth
right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Don't
go that way, because the way of man will lead
you astray every time. And trusting in your own understanding,
what do you say? Lead not to thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy path.
Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults."
See, the Lord shows you enough of yourself that you see the
things. But you see, the children of
God don't just want to be delivered from the things that are external,
the things they can see. They are like David who said,
O Lord, search me and see if there be any wicked way in me.
And of course, we know there is wicked ways in us. But Lord,
cleanse us from secret faults, not just the outward things that
men can see, but the very workings of our soul and heart that are
in rebellion against God. Cleanse Thou me from secret faults.
Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins. Oh, if religion
could be defined today, that would be the place it would be.
Presumption. See, the vast majority of people
who claim to be the followers of the Lord, they presume that
they are the followers of the Lord. Because somebody told them
they were the followers of the Lord. They told them if they
do certain things, they'd be the followers of the Lord. Well,
dear brethren, that's presumption. We ought not presume because
we've done anything that anything. Because what's the heart? Deceitful,
desperately wicked. Oh, that the Lord might keep
us back from it. Presumptuous sins. Let them not
have dominion over me because they will. See, all sin will
have dominion over us apart from the grace of God to keep us from
it. Then shall I be upright and I
shall be innocent from the great transgression, that is, from
the overwhelming work of transgression. I'll be kept back. from the sin
that does so easily beset us and will destroy us. Oh, keep
us from it. Then shall I be upright and shall
be innocent from the great transgression. There is only one way that can
happen, and that is the Word of the Lord working in the people
of God. Let the words of my mouth and
the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord,
my strength and my redeem. I believe that's the prayer of
all God's people. If a man has been taught who
the Lord is, he can't help but rejoice to pray such a prayer
as that. Can he not? I mean, can he desire
that the meditation of his heart not be acceptable in the sight
of the Lord? Don't let me just be religious. Don't let me just be found out
here going through some motions and just being satisfied with
meeting a certain standard or whatever, but let the very meditation
of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength
and my Redeemer. Because ultimately when it all
boils down to the brass tacks, all of our hope And our expectation
is in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, what He has done
in our behalf. And if He is not our Redeemer,
we do not have any redemption. And if we do not have any redemption,
then we shall perish. Oh, that the Lord might cause
us to love His Word, to rejoice in His law,
