What does irresistible grace mean?

Answered in 17 sources

Irresistible grace is the teaching that God's grace to save those He has chosen cannot be resisted, and ultimately leads to their salvation.

Irresistible grace, often referred to as invincible grace, conveys the doctrine that when God saves someone, He will ensure that they come to faith and ultimately be saved. In Ephesians 2:8-9, Paul emphasizes that salvation is 'by grace... not of works, lest any man should boast.' This highlights that God's grace is a powerful force that regenerates the heart of the sinner, enabling them to respond positively to the gospel. The transformation is such that even though individuals may resist God's call initially, His grace overcomes all opposition. Philippians 1:6 reassures us, 'Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.' This assures believers that God’s work in their lives will be completed because it is founded on His sovereign will.
