Why is imputed righteousness important for Christians?

Answered in 33 sources

Imputed righteousness is vital for Christians as it allows them to stand justified before God, completely dependent on Christ's merit rather than their own works.

Imputed righteousness is foundational in Reformed theology, emphasizing that believers are declared righteous before God solely based on the righteousness of Christ credited to them. This doctrine affirms that our sin is imputed to Christ, and in return, His obedience and righteousness are attributed to us (2 Corinthians 5:21). This imputation provides the believer with assurance of acceptance before God, as it is Christ's merit and grace that secure our standing, not our flawed efforts or performances. The assurance of standing justified frees Christians from the burden of works righteousness and instills a sense of peace with God, thus empowering them to live a life in response to His grace.
