The Bible teaches that God sovereignly separates His people from the world, just as He separated the Israelites in Goshen.
In Genesis, we see how God placed the Israelites in the land of Goshen, a region in Egypt but removed from the Egyptians due to their profession as shepherds, which was abominable to the Egyptians. This separation serves as a picture of how believers are to live in the world but not be of the world, as emphasized in Exodus 6:6-8, where God declares, 'I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.' This demonstrates His sovereign purpose in guiding His people to be distinct while still being present in a surrounding culture that does not align with His holiness.
Genesis 46:34, Exodus 6:6-8
God shows His protection by separating believers from the judgments that fall upon the ungodly.
Throughout Scripture, particularly evident in the plagues of Egypt, God demonstrates His distinguishing grace by sparing the Israelites while pouring out judgment on the Egyptians. For example, in Exodus 8:22-23, God declares that He will put a division between His people and the Egyptians, ensuring their safety during calamities. This illustrates the deeper spiritual truth that all believers, through their union with Christ, are protected from God's wrath because Christ has borne it on their behalf, signifying that those in Christ will always be secure from eternal judgment.
Exodus 8:22-23, Exodus 11:7
Acknowledging our need for God's mercy is vital as it reflects our dependence on His grace and provision.
The Israelites, upon entering Egypt, recognized their status as sojourners and expressed their need for Pharaoh's favor, mirroring how we, as Christians, must come before God acknowledging our dependence on His mercy. Just as the brothers of Joseph sought assistance in a time of famine, we are to humbly confess our spiritual needs before God, recognizing that we are spiritual pilgrims yearning for the heavenly country. This acknowledgment not only demonstrates our reliance on God’s grace but also aligns our hearts to receive His abundant provision, just as the Israelites were given the land of Goshen, which illustrates God's care and sustenance for His people.
