Insightful excerpt from Pastor MacArthur on an important little understood subject.

The sermon delivered by Pastor John MacArthur focuses on the doctrine of Limited Atonement, particularly in relation to the age of accountability. MacArthur argues that the concept of an age of accountability is unbiblical, positing that Scripture does not support this notion, nor does it provide a specific age at which individuals become morally responsible for their sins. Utilizing texts such as 1 John 2:2 and John 3:16, he emphasizes that all humans, from the moment of conception, are under God's judgment due to original sin, as articulated in Psalm 51. The central significance lies in the understanding that salvation is only attainable through individual acknowledgment of sin and faith in Christ, asserting that the doctrine of original sin underscores the urgent need for divine mercy.

Key Quotes

“What it is, is a completely and absolutely utterly made-up unbiblical notion.”

“The issue isn't whether or not we've committed this sin or committed that sin. The issue is what are we.”

“...the only way to escape the judgment of God is by each of them one by one personally Crying out for God's mercy in Christ.”

“From my conception, I've been a sinner. And as a sinner, he is under God's judgment unless or until he rests in the work of Christ.”

What does the Bible say about the age of accountability?

The Bible does not mention an age of accountability; all humans are accountable for their sin from conception.

The concept of an age of accountability is not found in Scripture. Instead, the Bible teaches that all humanity, from the moment of conception, is in a state of sin due to original sin. David, in Psalm 51:5, acknowledges this reality by stating, 'In sin did my mother conceive me.' This foundational truth indicates that we are deemed guilty before God from the very beginning. Therefore, the issue isn't when we become accountable but rather our inherent nature as sinners needing redemption through Christ.

Psalm 51:5, 1 John 2:2, John 3:16

How do we know original sin is true?

Original sin is affirmed in Scripture, demonstrating that all humans are born in sin and under judgment.

The doctrine of original sin is rooted in biblical texts that describe the condition of humanity. Romans 5:12 teaches that sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, which spread to all men because all sinned. This clearly establishes that all individuals inherit a sinful nature at conception, thus reinforcing the belief that no one is exempt from accountability before God. The acknowledgment of original sin is crucial for understanding the need for salvation through faith in Christ, as only through Him can one be justified and escape divine judgment.

Romans 5:12, Psalm 51:5, 1 John 2:2

Why is understanding sin important for Christians?

Understanding sin is vital for recognizing our need for Christ's mercy and salvation.

A robust understanding of sin is essential for Christians because it deepens our awareness of our state before a holy God. The recognition that we are sinners from conception drives home the necessity of Christ's redemptive work. It eliminates any reliance on personal actions or moral standing for salvation, directing individuals to God’s mercy. Without acknowledging our true nature as sinners, the significance of grace is diminished. Thus, comprehending sin not only informs our doctrine but also shapes our worship, gratitude, and dependence on Christ for salvation and daily living.

What is the age of accountability? Well there are really two ways
to ask that question. One is asking for what is the
definition of this phrase age of accountability and the other
is to say at what age does a person reach this age of accountability. For our listeners who have not
grown up in the evangelical milieu, you may be unfamiliar with even
the meaning of the term. What it simply means is that
It is the affirmation that there is a particular age when children
move from being in a state of not being accountable for their
sins to suddenly being accountable for their sins. That if they
should, for instance, die before they reach this age of accountability,
they will enter into paradise. innocent creatures not because
Jesus suffered for them but because they have no sin that can be
morally accounted to them because God has determined they're not
responsible. That's what it means. What it
is is a completely and absolutely utterly made-up unbiblical notion. The Bible says absolutely nothing
about an age of accountability. It is an idea that was created
in the minds of men to deal with the sticky problem of what do
we do How do we look at children who die before they're even able
to make a profession of faith? And for many, not me, but for
many before, as they would perceive it, before the child is able
to come to a saving knowledge of Christ. And hey, presto change,
uh, we'll just stick this into our, uh, theology concepts. Uh, we won't find the first,
uh, bit of biblical support for it, but, but it will prop up
our hope. Now, I will admit, I'm perfectly
happy to actually, maybe I've been a little too harsh. Don't
hold me accountable for that, but I'm willing to agree to an
age of accountability as long as we agree that the age of accountability
is the moment of conception. We're accountable from the very
beginning. The issue isn't whether or not
we've committed this sin or committed that sin. The issue is what are
we? This is why the doctrine of original
sin is in the Bible. This is why David says in Psalm
51, in sin did my mother conceive me. He's not saying my mother
was sinning when she and my father came together in marital union. He's saying that from my conception,
I've been a sinner. And as a sinner, he is under
God's judgment unless or until he rests in the work of Christ. I do know this. The Bible doesn't
say there's an age of accountability. I believe that there's only one
way for any human being who stands guilty before the living God,
which includes all human beings from the moment of conception
with the exception of Jesus, any one of these people, the
only way to escape the judgment of God is by each of them one
by one personally Crying out for God's mercy in Christ doesn't
have to be verbal. Internally, crying out for God's
mercy in Christ. And when they do, every one of
them goes to their eternal home justified.
